Against human players, I would take Efreeti rather than Nightmares, for their frustration value ;-)

Medusas (great shooting unit, stone gaze), nightmares (powerful tank unit; they look great!) and black dragons (of course).

I love Asylum

I always go by the most effective path

Medusa - Good shooter, especially with stone gaze
Efreete - Have that magic shield, and look way cool, and are stronger then
nightmares
Black Dragons - They are the strongest level four unit, and the kick ass

Medusa's are tough Lvl 2's  with that death gaze

Nightmares spread can immobilze powerful opposing creatures with fear spell   but Effreet are fast and can make a mess in an enemy's ranks ( I hate fighting against them)

Hydra's slow but have some limited virtues, none however that can match Black Dragons  save for  only 1 black a week.

I usually go for

Medusae (Death Stare)
Efreeti (expert at Level 4 killing, especially BD's)
Hydras (Cat Reflexes, Mass Slayer)

I like to get a few Nighmares though - they come in handy against neutral stacks. Also on some maps, Black Dragons are good (fast, flying and never dies against neutral stacks if you handle them corectly).

(Hydra is an obvious choice in most cases, since in numbers it is much better)

I use hydra sometimes depends enemy.  Say if they have a lot of melee units, hydra are better.  BD are better vs shooter and spell casters.  minotaur can also be used, but depend alot on chance.  efreet is obviously better than mare, cuz of fire related ability (as long as enemy doesn't have fire resistance)

Well, 2 Hydras eat a Black Dragon. Not that it matters.

- I always take medusa's without exception.  I don't understand why anyone would want to have minotaurs ayway.

- Efreet or Nightmares?  I used to adore Nightmares in the past because of their superb health and their terror.  I still do, but Efreet are in my opinion better in more situations.  The damage they can deal through the fire shield is horrible (I almost hate them as much in an enemy army as I hate enemy vampires).  They kill, kill, kill and together with medusas and hydras or blackies they make the enemy freak.  What stack to fear most? ...  If you pick Nightmares, the enemy will let you cast your terror and then focus power on your medusas or level 4's.

- Blackies or Hydra's?  Ugh, one of the toughest creature choices in the game!  Blackies are fast, spell immune, tanks (extreme attack and defense and lots'o life) and have breath attack.  Nothing can stand in its way.  But blackies are expensive and they come in portions of one per week.  Hydras are slower, cheaper, in larger numbers, multi-headed, no retal creatures that trip on cat reflexes, haste, bloodlust and the like.  In combat I love hydra's but on the adventure map I prefer dragons.  It depends on the situation, I usually choose blackies over hydra's because of their great speed at the adventure map but it also depends on opponent town choice.

Minotaurs are good. They are tough, good tanks with an extremely annoying specialty. If you like to take your chances of if you think your enemy is afraid of it, it is a good choice.

It is a good idea to pick minotaurs against Death.

These are the creatures I normally choose in Asylum:

Level 2 - This is a very tough one. Medusas have unlimited shots, deadly stone gaze and shooting ability, but the enemy universially targets them and they aren't that strong. Minotaurs, on the other hand, may be slow, but they have one of the highest HP's of the Level 2's and their blocking abillity is frustrating for the enemy. Therefore, it depends on the situation.

Level 3 - Nightmares. What else. High HP's, terror cast and great damage. Efreeti may have fire shield, but I think they are quite weak.

Level 4 - Normally I go for Hydras because they are cheap and that you get double growth compared to Black Dragons, but I can't underestimate the Black Dragon's supreme power. But they are too expensive!

None: as Bandits are humans and orcs are from tolkien.

Both: as Medusa and Minotaurs are both awsome and evil!

Both: as both belong in hell with me.

Hydra: as Dragons are only myths...

Of course I choose Medusas instead of those Minotaurs.
They can knock off about everything...blah.. blah
And I use the Nightmares (toughness much greater than those poor Efreeti+terror)
Well, Chaos Hydra or Black dragon. That's the question!
Normally I use Hydras only if I'm in possesion of Master  Chaos magic (because of cat reflexes and so on..)

Otherwise I choose black dragons to kick all the archmages' butts!!

I choose Medusas because if you don't, you will be stuck with only Orcs with Short Range and only 6 shots. However, Minotaurs are great with their Block ability too. If I can capture another Chaos town within 1 month or so, I would churn out Minotaurs to accompany the Medusas.

Nightmares and Efreets are 50-50. Nightmares are good because of their massive HP value and their ability to cast Terror and immobilise potentially dangerous creatures. Efreets have natural Fire Shields. Efreets can be used as a "suicide squad" against huge stacks of creatures when necessary.

I usually choose Black Dragons since they are the strongest creatures in the game. Although the fact that Hydras are statistically weaker than Black Dragons cannot be denied, I love Hydras all the same. After all, they have their usefulness in battles as well and they offer great protection to my troops since my strategy is to wait for the enemies to come to me.

I usually choose medusas but since I'm almost at the end of the Tawni Balfour campaign, I'd say you need to have medusas in numbers to really benefit from that gaze attack.  With minotaurs, they have the same chances of blocking whether you have 1 or infinite in a stack and they are tougher units.

I like nightmares because they are tough and terror is very nice but a good sized efreeti stack can take out a tough hero because of that bloody shield and their combat movement is quite nice indeed.

I usually pick Blacks over Hydras but I can't stand how much sulfur you need to get to make Dragon Caves and get dragons.  Mercury seems to be an easier resource to accumulate and as some have mentioned Hydras are cheaper too.

Although I haven't used Hydras much, I'd say that if your hero is a magic one(with some decent spells) and you are up against a might hero with Black Dragons, I might take the Hydras instead.

Considering hydras and blackies, I've come to realize that blackies are indeed far more useful. Hydras are extremely dependant upon spells. They NEED haste and/or teleport (very hard to get by chaos). In the Pirate's Daughter campagin and the map where you have to kill Captain swift, I had only two towns that made blackies while all the others made hydras and still I found myself using blackies far more than hydras. Indeed, I only used those 95 hydras in the final battle when I was up against 50 blackies and I must admit, they kicked butt. But you NEED those spells and that means that your hero can't cast mass misfortune or something like that.

I'm playing that same campaign(on map 4 now) and almost exclusively used dragons.  One problem with this is you are comparing how you use dragons to how the AI uses the hydras.  You will almost certainly get the impression that dragons are much better if you always choose the dragons and only compare them with how the AI uses hydras.  Especially if your heros are higher level and have way more artifacts than the AI's heroes.  I think dragons are still the more preferable choice in most situations though.

Getting back to your fight with Swift, you said the 95 hydras kicked butt!  Wanna know why?  If you read Wub's thread on comparing units, you will know that as a stack gets bigger, it strength gets stronger by a bigger factor.  I will take 1 dragon over 2 hydras but I'll take 100 hydras over 50 dragons.  That's one of the major reasons your hydras kicked butt.

Whoops! I guess I forgot to mention those 200 nightmares, 415 medusas, 12 blackies of my own and not to mention two GM archer heroes plus mass slayer on all my troops So that kinda tones down the hydra's usefulness, doesn't it?

I pick :

Medusa: because usually they can be bought earlier and they anyway kick more ass than minotaur

Efreeti: They are faster

Black : You all Know why
