1. What are the yellow and red stars?
=====================================

Paste from FAQ:

Quote:
Yellow stars correspond to the member's post count. Members start with no yellow stars and can get up to six yellow stars. Each yellow star amount has a rank associated with it. Tavern Dweller is the rank of members with no yellow stars; Hired Hero is the one yellow star rank; Adventuring Hero for two yellow stars, etc.

An amount of yellow stars held by a member does not illustrate his importance nor quality of his ideas, it only illustrates the amount of posts made by that member.

You do not need to worry about getting stars, because if you are logged in properly, yellow stars will be given to you automatically once you reach a certain amounts of posts.

1.1 How do I get/lose yellow stars?
===================================

As mentioned above, you get yellow stars by posting. Yellow stars depend on your post count as follows:

Less than 20 posts: No yellow stars. Rank: Tavern Dweller
21 posts: 1 yellow star. Rank: Hired Hero
51 posts: 2 yellow stars. Rank: Adventuring Hero
121 posts: 3 yellow stars. Rank: Known Hero
301 posts: 4 yellow stars. Rank: Famous Hero
801 posts: 5 yellow stars. Rank: Supreme Hero.
2001 posts: 6 yellow stars. Rank: Legendary Hero.

Posts refer to post count. Post count is affected by the following things:

* If you send in a post and the previous post in that thread was not your own, then your post count is increased by 1.
* If you send in a post and the previous post in the topic is your own, then your post count stays the same.
* If you send in a post and the two previous posts in the topic are your own, then your post count is reduced by 3.

NOTE: If you've made a reply to a thread, and want to make a new one then you can edit your post to avoid the penalty.

To Edit a post you must log in using the user name you had when you made the post. The "Edit Post" link will then appear at the end of each post you've made.

Trouble-shooting tip if the link does not appear even though you are logged in:

When you log in the user name is not case sensitive. However, the "Edit Post" link does not appear if you are logged in with another capitalization of the user name than the one you used when you made the post.

* If you delete one of your own posts, then your post count is reduced by 1.
* If you delete a thread, then your post count is decreased by 1 for each post made by any member in that thread. (The members whose posts you deleted when you deleted the thread will get +1 post count for each post they had made in the thread.)
* If a moderator deletes a post you made, then your post count is reduced by 1.

NOTE: Members are strongly advised to ask the moderator to delete threads they've made which they consider superfluous.

1.2 Yellow stars and custom Avatar.
===================================

In order to get a custom Avatar you need two yellow stars. Each member can ask for only one custom Avatar. The size of the Avatar is restricted to 2kB. More information on Avatars and Avatar reservation is in the FAQ.

The option to reserve an Avatar becomes available when you have two yellow stars when you edit your Profile. (If you do not have two yellow stars then the option to reserve an Avatar will not appear when you edit the profile.)

1.3 How do I get red stars (quality points)?
============================================

The forum guidelines says that quality points should be awarded to the 2% top posts.

3 red stars, you need a quality count of +3. Prefix: Promising.
4 red stars, you need a quality count of +8. Prefix: Responsible
5 red stars, you need a quality count of +15. Prefix: Honorable.
6 red stars, you need a quality count of 25-28 (not sure on the exact amount)
. Prefix: Admirable

It should be noticed that quality is subjective and the moderator reserves the right to judge what is good quality. Therefore, quality points is usually something which you will not get with any predictability unless a post is outstanding.

In the past the number of outstanding posts on this forum are more around 0.2 percent than 2% so therefore the majority of quality points will be given for behaviour which the moderator wants to stimulate.

This behaviour includes:
- Good discussions on on-topic topics.
- New and innovative ideas.
- Friendliness and respect towards other users.
- Funny topics or remarks. (But don't make jokes at other's expense.)

Often a user needs to make several good posts before getting a quality point.

Getting quality points is not only a matter of posting things which has a good content, but it's also about avoiding things that are breaches of the code of conduct. Most minor breaches of the code of conduct will not result in penalties.

Note: Moderators are overall good at keeping notes and remembering the good things you've done along with the bad things.

1.4 Benefits with red stars.
============================

Three red stars removes flood-protect when editing.
Four red stars removes your flood-protect.
Five red stars allows you to rate topics in the forum.

2. Altar of Wishes
2.1 Which topics belong to this Forum?
======================================

The following topics are on-topic for the Altar of Wishes:
- News about Heroes 4 Patches and Expansions and news about Heroes 5.
- Any wishes and ideas you have for changes/improvements to the game.
(And this includes also the Map Editor/Campaign Editor.)
- Discussions related to the items listed above.

All the items listed in the Index for the
Altar of Wishes
are examples of topics that are on-topic for the Altar of Wishes.

2.2 Use of Thread ratings.
==========================

Some thread ratings are used in a special way in the Altar of Wishes.

"average": Any topic which the Moderator considers for deletion is marked "average". This doesn't necessarily mean the topic will be deleted soon but means that it will be taken away eventually.

"interesting": A topic which contains a good discussion or an interesting idea. These topics are often part of the Altar Index, and often the moderator considers one or more posts in the topic for +QPs.

"inspiring": These are the best topics, and will have one or more +QPs in them. (Some older topics may have this rating but no +QPs assigned to them.)

"important": This rating is used for the following:
- Announcements to the forum about new information about the game (new screenshots, contents of an expansion or patch and similar).
- Moderator announcements to the forum.

3. How do I search for existing topics?
========================================

In order to make this forum orderly, the Moderators encourages users to search the forum for a relevant topic and revival of old topics instead of creating a new one. Most of the more common topics are included in the Index for the Altar of Wishes, so a member should look through that thread to find something related. Members are also encouraged to look through the 100 most recent topics on the Altar.

The main reason for this is that the forum currently has no way to merge two threads, so creating a duplicate topic will place very similar discussion in two different threads and will make it harder to find things in the forum.

Message from Valeriy:

Quote:
There have been some new active posters joining Heroes Community in the last several days. Welcome! I would just like to ask them one thing on behalf of all the members. Please read the older thread names before posting your thread. You won't believe how many of your questions and ideas are already posted on this board and rather then starting a new thread, you can contribute to the existing discussion, bringing it to the top of thread list. For some old timers it's just annoying to see so many things said again, when they were being discussed about a week ago and are still on the boards. This is not a rule, you can post any ideas, but it helps to be aware of other people's perspective, like you are now.

Another thing to consider is naming your topics properly. Bad names are: "what do you think about this idea?", "have a look at this", "something to consider" - because they do not tell the viewer what the post is about. A good thread topic should give a summary of what is contained within, for example: "creature experience ideas" or "possible stronghold creatures" or "artifacts".

Please be aware that this forum is for HOMM4 wishes only. Take anything else than HOMM4 wishes/suggestions to the Tavern, almost anything goes there.

It is possible to search HC using normal search motors such as Google. Google generally updates the search database for HC every one or two months, which means that the latest topics/posts won't be found.

How to search here using google.com:

A. Go to: www.google.com

B. Type your keyword(s) and then add "site:heroescommunity.com" in the search box.

C. Search!

You can also type the search directly in the URL window. If you want to search for "Venom Spawn" it would look like this:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22venom+spawn%22+site%3Aheroescommunity.com

4. Answers for some common Heroes 4 questions.
==============================================

* Multiplayer is included in The Gathering Storm (1st expansion to Heroes 4). If you have Heroes 4, you need to apply the 2.0 patch in order to get Multiplayer to work.

* The Gathering Storm and Winds of War expansions have been released.

* Winds of War has been released in the US. I aniticpate that most other countires will get in March or April.

* Hotseat was included in Heroes 4 base product. You don't need the Multiplayer Patch to use Hotseat. To use Hotseat simply mark 2 or more players as Human players in the scenario. This will cause Hotseat to be used automatically when you launch the game.

5. Heroes 5 information

* 3DO has sold the rights for making the Heroes of M&M and Might and Magic series to Ubi Soft.

* A number of concept art scetches are available.

* Information from Ubisoft are summarized in other sticky threads, please check them out for details.

LATEST NEWS
* H5 officially announced

6. Poster of the Month Award.
=============================

This section will be amended with those who have received the Poster of the Month Award for the Altar of Wishes.

To stimulate good behaviour the following now applies for the Altar of Wishes. From now on the moderators will give 1 qp per month to the "poster of the month". The poster of the month will mainly consider things such as friendliness and helpfulness, and the overall tone of the poster. The members who have received this award will be announced to this thread.

I also plan to apply this reward retroactively by applying 10 bonuses to posters who have made a good contribution to the Altar of Wishes during the past 12 months. (Who have received these will also be announced to this thread.)

----

Note: Comments to this and suggestions for inclusions to this FAQ is to be posted to this thread.

Note: The above applies only to the Altar of Wishes.

Good to See....

Firstly, I would like to say thanks to Djive for creating this FAQ on how to behave properly and information that would probably prove to be invavluable to the newbies of this board. It also saves many hassles of newbies creating threads, asking how many stars, etc. Also it saves moderators from deleting all of these threads.

Notes on the thread:

Section 1.1 how do I lose, recieve Yellow Stars.

I am quite sure that it has been said somewhere that when the poster recieves a certain number of posts equivalent to six stars, the star count goes down to 0 and the prefix is spamming hero. It amy not be true, but I don't think the hero actually gets 6 stars.

Post count effects

*When one posts 2 posts in a row in the same thread, their posts count stays the same.

Section 1.2

Also, at 51+ posts (2 yellow stars) an avatar can also be reserved. For more information, view the FAQ.

Section 3. How do I search for existing topics?

I suggest that the Index for the Altar of Wishes be brought to the top for newer posters and so that they can actually utilise this facility.

Section 4. Answers for some common Heroes 4 questions

Here are some more questions:

* The scripting device allows you to place creatures and artifacts into an army of your choice. It also can accomplish more elaborate tasks such as completing a quest to retrieve a certain hero who is needed to open a particular border guard which leads to the next part of the scenario.

* The release date for the second Expansion is expected in the 2nd Quarter next year.

* Multiplayer patch is available but 1.3 is needed. Patch 2.1 fixes the crashes brought about by clicking the epilogue and prologue tabs in the editor.

5. Poster of the Month

This is a good idea in my opinion, and it should encourage more people to post here. Also, when more information about the expansion and Heroes V is released, this forum will once again be the most active forum, like it was when I joined until about January of this year.

Look forward to seeing other posters take the initiative on this forum.

Poster of the Month Awards!

The Retroactive Poster of the Month awards have been assigned as follows:

Largo_LeGrande in Little ideas
Thunder in All the Unrealism in HOMMs
Pleuris in Things I don't understand in HoMM4
Vladpopescu79 in Special days
Jenova in Special days
Tristan in Heroes IV Battle Effects (second bonus in thread)
gerdash in Heroes IV Battle Effects
SirDunco in Concerning night and day
DonGio in Multi-battles??
Saruman in List of New Creatures from D&D ...

Some mention for these rewards.
-The topics have been mainly selected among interesting/inspiring topics.

-The posters for the retroactive rewards have been selected among those who have less than 3 bonuses in the Altar already. (It was considered that if you have +3 QPs in the Altar then you had already got some recognition here in the past.)

-Some members have changed their user-name. In those cases I've not considered posts made with the old user name for this reward.

And so for the big announcement:

Poster of the Month for October 2002:
Lich King!

(Award in this topic.)

In addition outside of the PMA awards:
ThE_HyDra was given a second +QP for the Battle Effects thread. ThE_HyDrA: you are now honorable and can start rating topics!

There's been some good new discussions popping up in the altar lately.

I'll give the discussions until mid-next week before deciding where and to whom I'll give QPs. (How many QPs depend on how the discussions develope during the week.)

Also an encouragemnet to posters who want to post about the vision and dreams about Heroes 5. There are already about 4-5 topics on page 1-2 of the altar with good debates/discussions.

Please revive, one of these threads instead of creating a new thread.

Poster of the Month Award for November.

I found this contest even. Two posters have made about the same contribution this month, and were a bit ahead of the other posters in terms of friendliness, activeness and contribution. These two were Svetac and shaowei. Still, I want to keep the award to one person per month, so I will make a choice for one of them.

Poster of the Month for November 2002:
Svetac

(Bonus applied in "Of Heroes and battles, skills, specialties, characters, artifacts, etc. - Idea")

Added: There was very little posts in the Altar in december and not much so far in January. I'll therefore combine the posts in December/January to one Poster of the Month Award.

How? I asked for it.

I actually gave up 18 QP and an Honorable Supreme Rank for a Mod Sword.

Added:

I thought I would be a bit democratic this time around with the Poster of the Month Award. As you may know December and January was combined into one constest.

As you know the Poster of Month is giving partly for being active and helping in keeping the forum alive, so post count is a very important factor, but also what you say.

I've counted posts and judged the merit of the posts/topics made in December and January and came to the conclusion(s):

1. I have not given a single +QP in these two months.
2. Three members have been considerably more active than the others, and any of these three can be considered for the Poster of the Month Award. These are:

Grythandril
god_boy
Odvin

The two first have also contributed to topics that are near +QP material. Odvin's posts are more conversational.

So I ask, Any opinions on who you would be the most worthy Poster of the Month?

Do any of you think that I should give one award for december and one for January after all?

The Altar of Wishes index page was super-useful!
I suggest everyone to go there before posting a new thread.

I just thought:
It would have been nice to give QPs to members who actively help MODs making this forum better, i.e reports violations of the rules, suggests which threads are to be deleted and so on.

HC need more people to tidy things up, see.

New Poster of the Month Award.

Poster of the Month for February 2003: Stargazer!

(Second this time would be this-other-guy, and others fall well behind when it comes to posting activity. As you may know part of the reason for the Award is to stimulate activity.)

Award given in the "Preserve" topic. Congratulations.

PS. There has also been some clean-up in the Altar. I've removed several minor squabbles in the topics posted in during February which IMO opinion did little except detracting from the main topic. DS.

Edited:
There has been a lot of town ideas. Try to reuse topics. Do not make a new topics for creatng your own line-up. Instead post lineups in exisiting thread discussing that town type.

New topics should preferrably be used only if no thread exists for that town type. And it would be fairly difficult to come up with something entirely new since town types is one of the most common wish subjects.

Edited to bring back to top.

It's already explained in the FAQ.

You must first be an Adventuring Hero (51 posts). Then the option to reserve an Avatar will appear when you Edit your profile. I guess I could just as well add it here also.
