I personally think 3do has a lot of nerve to release this "expansion" at this time, This Game has a lot of Bugs that still are not fixed, The "Expansion" gives very little.  (Whoo Hooo 4 new creatures, and not even dwellings for them) I could care less about new crap maps, Custom maps I can pull off Internet are much superior.  and an asking price of 40.00 (New game pricing practically)  

Even tho I have always been a heroes fan and have all releases to this point, I cannot in any type of faith support this money grubbing company with this "expansion"  

For years I have told people using rips of heroes if they enjoy the game, Buy IT!! support the company so they can continue to produce quality games.  In the case of The Gathering Storm, If u can't live without it, I would say to download it I think giving 3D0 Money for this "expansion" is just asking them to screw us again when they need cash for the company.

Seems to me that 3DO really did want HMM4 to be a great game, but the management really screwed up in several areas.
Putting so much effort into creating new graphics for the game and not working on AI or decent multiplayer was a major cockup....and the way they handled the company downsizing was poor...morale at NWC must have been at rock bottom during the development and it shows in the final product.
I'm not sure if the company is aware of it but they have come across to the gaming public as arrogant and aloof, they strike me as that way anyway.
I won't be buying any expansions until 3DO finishes the game.

It really p####s me off that the HMM series seems to be viewed by the company as a low priority money spinner until they get their console products going.
Meanwhile the HMM franchise languishes.

At times I find myself wishing that 3DO would fold so that the franchise is passed to a company that gives a damn about it and has the means to support it.

I own the expansion.. My bro bought it. It's crap.

The campains suck bigtime. Each one is so predictable. And the game brings nothing new really, just more maps to play on, a handful of artifacts, and a new (unimpressive) intro. The only new structures are a new shrine to each school of magic, and the 4 new creatures aren't recruitable (they belong to the enemy wizard.. forgot his name).

If you got bored with HOMM4, this expansion definately will not renew your interest in it. What took them so long to churn out this crap is what I want to know. It is no better than the Chronicles series of products.

In summary, it just doesn't make substantial improvements or additions to the game (by 2002 standards) for an expansion pack.

Personally, I really enjoy the expansion pack.  I think the campaigns have some new elements, and that most of the maps are really well done.  Definitely better than the H4 maps.  Everything map (and description) in H4 is basically "kill everybody else for some reason or another", where the plot behind it really doesn't matter, so it's just "kill everybody else".  I guess that's fine and all, but you'd think they could be more creative.

In contrast, H4GS seems to be well thought out.  Granted, it's the overly cliched "there's this ultimate bad guy and we have to find a bunch of things in order to beat him" premise, but if I forget about it, it's more fun.  =)  Take for example Agraynel's (the Bard's) campaign.  The whole thing is about stealth, not conquest.  You have to sneak by creatures, and the puzzle in the first scenario <EARLY-GAME SPOILER WARNING> where you have to sneak around collecting resources to buy training from the thief, so that he gives you grandmaster stealth, so that you can sneak by the Thunderbirds to continue, <END SPOILER> is just first-class.

Also, there's one independent scenario (can't remember which, but it was a small map with two opponents) where there is a small island in the very center of the map with a pandora's box sitting there.  I made it a priority to get to it first, thinking I was going to get an ultimate artifact and kick their butts, <SMALL SPOILER WARNING> but it turned out to be four Dragons, who kicked *my* army's butt.  And no reward either!  <END SPOILER> Boy was I surprised... I thought that was a pretty good "plot twist"...

Well, there are dwellings in the map editor... but I haven't seen them in the campaigns yet, and I've done 3 1/2 of them.  In fact, the only new creature I've seen so far is the goblin knight, and rarely and unspectacularly at that.  But I'm expecting all of those to appear more in the last campaign (I guess), and in the individual maps.  I guess.

Don't worry, you'll see all the new monsters, and in great numbers. On the first map of the last campaign, a stack with 60 Dark Champions and 200 Goblin Night (initial numbers) is not amongst the biggest and most challenging, so ...

Well, I finally got the expansion....

It's exiting too... I realy enjoy playing the Expansion.

First Comments !

There are six campaigns, but only five avilable... The sixth is the last battle against hexis...

1.Campaign "Masters of Magics"
Starting heroes: Bohb (Archmage), Aligment: Order, Male, Starting skills: Basic Order,B Enchantment,B Life, B Death, B Chaps, B Nature, max. level 30.
Violet (General) Aligment: Might,Female
SS: Adv.Combat, Basic Melee, Basic Magic Resistance, B Offence, B Tactics, B Defence. Max. level 23 (or so)
1. The Isle of Pyre:
This is not easy campaign as I thought. You start with Might town, without lvl.4 and Cyclope dwelling.(note your enemys can't have it either) only an external dwelling is avilable... The final Combat wass HARD My Army wasn't large enough, to defeat them, but I have sucseed. Thank's to Fortune...The fist new object which I have seen is: Nature Conservatory. Bobh had now Expert Nature, Adv. Life and Order. Violet GM Combat and Master Melee, Adv. Magic Resistance.
2. Slart's Fjord:
Well there begins two heroes battle. In fact I have defeated local guards and red player only with Violet and Bohb. Here I have encoutered my first expansion creature - Goblin Knight: There was Eight creatures, I have encoutered them with little fear, but soon I realised that I'm crushed...Well, I was forced to restart my day... I started with Nature town, builded it, but never recruited any creature exept Phoenixes. There was Teal player (Order) that was defeated with my Might/Nature army...Bohb: Master Nature, Adv. Chaos, Exp. Life and Order, Violet: GM Combat, Melee, Magic resistance, basic Archery.
3. Lambert plains:
This scenario was like the playing the tutorial for expierenced Heroes player... You begin with Order town, and next you can find another one... But what's the diference You can win this scenario with heroes. I have defeated Might (3 castles) without dying. (And don't forget it was the 3rd month). Then a Life army attacked my town... I had no idea that there would be a hero, that I must defeat... Bohb: Master Nature, Order; Exp. Chaos and Life; Adv. Death.
Violet lvl.24 General:
GM. Combat;Melee;Archery;Magic resistance;
Mast. None;
Exp. Tactics;
Adv. Offence;Leadership;Nobility;
Basic. Defence;Scouting;Stealth;Pathfinding;Navigation;Estates;Mining. (It's a pity for loosing Violet)
4. Mt. Anon
I start without Violet... Sad news... But I'm archmage now ! And I have the angelfeather cloak, which gives me a heavenly shield... I beated all guards in my peninsula. By the way there were three Haven towns... I boasted my skills and what do you know... My enemy hero (which I must defeat) arrives next to me alone with two hydras. Well AI did screw this time lol ...Well I had the same Master Life,Nature,Order and Expert Death and Chaos.
5. Mire of the dead
This map was tough enough. I started with Chaos Town (Just Great ! Morale BOnus !!! -6 ). Anyway I cleaned the teritorry and when I was about to finish doing that AI came with his huge (This time realy huge) army. I've buyed all troops I could... But there were not enough time... But WAit !! I had A Town Gate spell !!! Quickly I gathered my troops (Another Great !! There were no Blackies avilable.) and attacked AI, blast him ! He escaped... THe next thing I done: I entered In that stincky swamp, when that moron striked me again... And there it was: The Dark Champion ! Lol. He couldn't even begin his move. (thanks to the Holy shout...). The Combat was NOT easy. I suggest first kill a hero... He killed my 12 hydras in 2 rounds (Hand oh Death of course). Then He began to raise Vampires... I had Necromancy Ward hehe.... The Hero died last. He had GM Magic Resistance you know... Finaly I finished that campaign...
Bobh - lvl.30 Archmage
GM: Order,Wizardry,Enchantment,Meditation,Healing;
M: Nature,Chaos,Life,Sprituality,Herbalism;
Exp: Death,Demonology,Ocultism,Sorcery;
Adv: Charm;
Bas: Ressurection,Summoning;

The review of the campaign:
It was intersting to play with archmage, which can use many spells, but in that case I would like to have 3 turns per round . In the other hand maps were terrible... They were all island type, two sided and not very balanced... But It was fun either...
