It depends on what type of game you play.  If you're playing a single player map I'd say Bone Dragons all the way.  Using one single vampiric touch on them almost renders them immortal in greater numbers.
In multiplayer or hotseat I'd pick devils most of the time.  They die faster, but the teleport ability is just too good to pass on to.  Devils are the best hero killing creatures in the game.
Btw, talking about the necropolis.  It might not be such a bad idea to choose venom spawns instead of vamps.  You get plenty of vamps through necromancy anyway and the spawns are hero busters too

U get plenty of vamps with necromacy but imagine if u get more....Vamps are way more usefull then venoms even they aren't shooters.Vamps are flying units, great hit&runnersnot affected by some spells.

I have not yet decided on bone dragons or devils. But another factor you should keep in mind, is that a devil dwelling is often somewhat harder to build due to resource cost. It is often easier to get a little of all 4 precious resources than to get a lot of one precious resource. And lower resource prerequisites encourage the use of bone dragons on smaller maps.

Often, a single player game is over before you are able to learn vampiric touch. Besides, vampiric touch would work great on devils too. I mean that it may be more the spell that is great, not necessarily the creature.

An addition: the teleporting ability is especially great in castle combat. I agree that devils are great hero killers, but when you take into consideration that a ghost/vampire/bone dragon line-up will reach your army on round two, your hero is in great danger too. In fact, that is what will happen, since this army requires offensive tactics. I think that devils are more likely to be used as hit & run unit; waiting, striking the hero and returning to safety. So I am not sure if this defensive tactic works well with those fast attacking vampires. But this is just an idea. And finally: don't forget that immortality potions will greatly decrease the chance of slaying a hero soon.

Totally disagree here. The fact that you get vampires from necromancy is only more reason to build vampires in my opinion. If you build two 3rd level units, you will need extra army slots. Moreover, I suspect that one big stack is more effective than two small ones. Also, venom spawns will greatly impair your incredible adventure map movement of 28. On top of that, vampires are great standalone units allowing you to quickly kill many neutral monster stacks eary in the game. Considering their fast combat movement, they may even be better hero killers than venom spawn, whose line of sight can be blocked. And finally, the fast, mobile line-up of necropolis creatures does not need a shooter too badly. Remember: the 'ranged' specialty is just a mobility increasing specialty. You can force enemies to come after you, allowing you to put your slow units to good use (as defenders of that shooter). But Death hasn't really got slow creatures in the mentioned line-up, so doesn't need that shooter very hard.

Bone dragons are great against living creatures but not as fast as devils.
It can take 1-2 turns to reach your enemy orless you have speed but the quanity is what counts too.
Devils are good for summoning Ice Demons & they can be tough too plus Devils are good on siege attacks but also as vulnerable as Dragons when hit so it will depend I think too

It's been mentioned elsewhere how difficult it is to determine an opponent's alignment before building 4th level creatures, but just for fun...

If, per chance, you discover that your opponent is Order, devils should be seriously considered over bone dragons since a) bone dragons' terror won't work on any mechanical creatures Order may have, whereas all of the devils' specialties will be in effect, b) ice demons are a pain in the butt for people who love Ice Bolt, and c) life spells are pretty easy for Order mages to get but impossible to use on devils.

My two cents (plus some lint ).

You may be right, but if you let the order player learn hipnotize, you will regreat your choice. Undeads canīt be hipnotized and sinse most players get vamps as level 3 creature there will be no high level creature to hipnotize if you choose the Dragons. When I play order, when I already got hipnotize, I usually was able to have increased the heroeīs speed to be greater than the devilīs speed, so you canīt kill the mage before your devil get hipnotized. Even if your devil is able to act fist, an immortality potion may ensure that it will be hipnotized.

Of course, itīs difficult to get hipnotize, I am not saying you are totally wrong.

Other thing, order is not so dependable on Ice Bolt. The heroeīs ice bolt is to weak, my mages usually donīt cast it, and the genies may create devilīs illusions instead of direct damaging the Ice Demons.

I think I have posted this on another Bones vs Devils thread but that’s been deleted or something so I will post it here.

This is a tough one. When I play as Death I usually choose Bone Dragons because of their higher amount of HP. But I constantly swap.
Bone Dragons are great for an offensive attack and their skeletal body makes most ranged attacks useless. Their Fear ability practically useless as it only moves creatures a few steps back and if you attack a ranged unit to stop them from attacking, they move away, opening their line of sight again.
Devils are better used in sieging or more magic orientated battles. This is because their teleport ability allows them to move behind enemy walls or your own, attack the enemy’s hero then teleport back before they hurt you too much. Summon ice demon is an excellent spell to use when you have a large number of devils. Ice demons can freeze their opponents for two or more turns. Both Bone Dragons and Devils are unbelievably strong when you cast Vampiric touch on them.

I used to always choose bone dragons as my top creature for Death before, but they went down a little lately. While bone dragons are very powerful with their fear and strond stats, in attacking castles they are very mediocre, considering their low combat speed. It takes them two turns to enter a castle (where as devils can go in immediately and harass the enemy within), and before they enter, tower shooters and offensive spellcasters can finish them off rather quickly if they have enough numbers. On the battlefield they are better, but they are still vulnerable until they reach the enemy.

Devils, although their stats are not as good as the bone dragons, have their teleportation as their main attack factor. They can attack anywhere on the battlefield, and they make first-turn hero killers. With aura of fear, they are even better as they become non-retaliatable. Their summon ice demon spell helps absorb retaliations. Now I normally choose them over bone dragons.

About Venom Spawn: these are not bad at all, since they are the only shooter in the death lineup. Their poison ability is useful, and they are much needed early in the game because the lower death units are very weak and go down easily.

Usual choice on death: Cerebri, Venom Spawn and Devils (the 'Inferno' lot).

Both B dragons and Devils are good but when you are facing someone with a greater army Devils can be of help by not just having good movement but summoning spell.

To take this thread onto a tangent:
What about the other fourth level creature choices?

Is there any fourth level creature that you think is really not worth it?

Which choice is the *most* obvious to you?

I have my one preferences, and they are based on my style of play which is "stand back and kill with ranged weapons" (except for death where it is "vamp them to death").

Hence my choices for the different alignments are:
Black dragons, fairy dragon, angel, thunderbird (but Behemoth is very close), devil and Titan.

What are your choices folks?

I'd generally take Devils.

So,

Devils, Thunderbirds, Faerie Dragons, Angels, Titans, Black Dragons.

Angels vs. Crusaders is probably the most obvious choice,  Faerie Dragon vs. Phoenix being the hardest.

Actually it's angels vs. champions, not crusaders.

My top choices would be:

Champions, titans, devils, black dragons, thunderbirds. For Nature, it's always split between the two - I can't seem to say which one's better - they are both good!

Devils!

I prefer Devils.  When playing long SP campaigns and when you have a powerful hero, Devils movement really helps you get across the map quickly.  Devils are good at sieges becuz when a dumb creature gets away from its tower the devil will take over the tower.  Boners are also good at seiges becuz their fear will take the enemy off the tower.  But I like Devils more.

But if i had to choose who to go against i would pick the devils becuz I can cast spells on them like blind, hypnotize, Hand of Death, etc.  Devils might hit my hero first but thats what potion of Immortality is for.  I don't like fighting against boners becuz they are big flying tanks (hard to kill).
