Heroes IV Fixtures

I love Heroes IV

It is a great game however there are a few niggling bits and and pieces that should be cleaned up before they release any more expansions or future heroes.

Map Editor

All the artifacts should have a descirption on them when you right click on them like its predecessor.

All the items, potions etc should be there on the editor
eg immortality potions.

There should be proper dwellings for the new creatures.

A Manual explaining everything from bombs to trigger events which could be done on a PDF file.

Game

Improved the AI especially when you are about to attack oppoents castle.

Be able to trade resources with your ally.

I would mention multiplayer but i haven't had time to experience that so anyone else can add to this if they wish.

Gee i had such in my mind about what to put in that i have forgotten.

If i can remeber i will put more to this in the mean time if anyone wish es to add to this, then feel free

I agree with you on most points here.  There are some points that definitely could use some improvements.

About the map editor, I couldn't agree more.  A lot can be learned about triggers when analyzing maps made by others though.

Improving AI *sigh*.  True, the AI is rather poor at some points, but I reckon the totally modified hero-system isn't strange to that.  They will need to work on that, but it's probably going to take a while.
Trading with allies can't be done?!  I thought you could but have to check that later on tonight.  If it's not possible then this is indeed a serious flaw.

Myself, I'd like to see some changes to the graphics (especially brightness), different location of buildings in towns, and smoother (some) animations.

I'd just like to add that when you consider the huge amount of changes between heroes 3 and 4, the amount of shortcomings are quite reasonable.

I agree with you on the layout of the buildings.

Although the graphics in the town are good the layout is exactly same as the other castles and should be unique like it was in heroes III.  but this is more of a make over IMHO.

The Castles most should have the appropriate moats ie fire for chaos, bones for the necro etc and also the damage to accompany it.

Actually trading with allies can be done, but it isn't connected to the marketplace anymore.  You can find it under the Game Menu, named trade
It can only be done with true allies (set allied in map) I guess, so that's rather different than in heroes 3.

Heroes IV vs. The Rest

Seems like a thread worthy of some discussion, and it has been proven that it is.

"I love Heroes IV"

As do I, and I have infact been playing it from April 22nd (Australian release day) to October the 23rd. (today) While I am proud to say that Heroes IV is a great game, I like Grythandril, feel that some indefinite aspects of Heroes IV should be sorted out before Heroes V is produced.

In my opinion, Heroes I, II, III, and IV have all been templates for Heroes V. Through their partnership, NWC and 3DO have been constantly altering the Heroes series for better or for worse. In my opinion, the only thing that has shown a sign for every Heroes series as getting better, are the graphics. Yes, Heroes II to III included some good parts, and some downfalls, just the same as when III went to IV. While IV went off the track of the usual trend of altering older elements of the Heroes series, it still retained that 'classic heroes' feel.
I think the thing that made Heroes IV distinctly different and also made people unsure about it was the addition of many new elements. Maybe the following were a bit too much for the majority of Heroes players to handle:
~>Heroes actively apart of combat !
~>Creatures able to roam around.
~>No upgrades !
~>Set levels and a decision must be made for that level.
~>Isometric Combat view
~>Line of Sight
~>Spellcasters in the form of creatures
~>Hero classes, class abilities!
~>Wandering guards, 4 levels and no specialty heroes!
I think most of these elements, especially ones with '!' next to them, caused many to become uncertain and wary of Heroes of Might and Magic IV. For some, it turned out nicely, for others, not so.

Why all of these changes? The answer, in my mind is set in stone, and it is a rather simple one at that.
Heroes I, II, III all included the same elements, each improving on each others features'. Heroes IV was different. It actually created so many of the new features. It, in many ways, is a pioneer of the 'new' Heroes, just like Heroes I was. Heroes IV is the new Heroes I. And just like Heroes I went to II, IV will go to V, improving those new implemented features. The fact of the matter is that Heroes IV was a new game, not meant to be a totally refined and 'natural' game. It is a template for Heroes V, and the future of the Heroes series.

Even though I believe that this is the truth, Heroes of Might and Magic IV is a very enjoyable game, and is a very worthy addition to the series. I'll first list my 'niggling feelings' and then respond to Grythandril's. (Which, quite frankly, very much agree with)

Map Editor

Editable properties
While this addition has been very much improved from Heroes III, I think almost everything should be editable. Things like: The Prison-choose which hero you receive, for all experience gaining structures-choose how much experience gained, say +750 each time for the Dream Teacher, or pay 10 gems for 2 levels on the tree of knowledge (+1 gem for each level), how much luck is increased by with an idol of fortune, define how much gold is given in a gold pile or chest, etc. I think this will give added depth.

Descriptions
Not only must they add the descriptions to artifacts, but also to the other Adventure Map objects, so one can instantly see how much morale a certain object gives without racking their brains.

Game Elements

More Bonuses given when upgrading to Citadel, Castle.
I think the bonuses don't give enough incentive for one to upgrade into a citadel or castle. I usually finish maps with my main town still a citadel, unless I have received surplus money from gold mines or other towns.

Hero Uniqueness
As I have stressed before, a distinct portrait and specailty (specialties, preferably) need to be created in order to regain my faith in the way heroes operate at lower levels.

"All the items, potions etc should be there on the editor
eg immortality potions."

In fact, they are. If you look under the artifacts tab, you will see a tab labelled *potions*. This does indeed give you the whole list of potions like immortality potions.

"A Manual explaining everything from bombs to trigger events which could be done on a PDF file."

I very much agree here. It would save time and effort asking people here on HC. Thunder has been known for answering all of the questions, though. It also would benefit new people to the game, as they would have the resources in front of them. Even for veteran players, creating scripts and events, etc, is a tough business.

"Improved the AI especially when you are about to attack oppoents castle."

I think everybody here is in agreeance with that statement. The AI needs to be improved for me to have a challenge on Heroes IV. I can't play ToH because of my slow connection.

"Myself, I'd like to see some changes to the graphics (especially brightness), different location of buildings in towns, and smoother (some) animations."

I stressed that point myself in my thread found in the Altar of Wishes. I exploited some of their graphics such as the Griffins Nest and Behemoth 'statue'.
I think that the graphics are vibrant enough as they are. Just look at Heroes III graphics! Very dark...

"The Castles most should have the appropriate moats ie fire for chaos, bones for the necro etc and also the damage to accompany it."

Yes, I very much agree here. While the moats are fine the way they are, it would feel more lifelike to have specialsed moats, even if they are in the name of common sense.

Nice thread, Grythandril.

Thanks Hydra

But the to the quotes you made i like those new additions:

Quote

~>Heroes actively apart of combat !
I think the Heroes taking part is an excellent move it give the combat a new dimension.

~>Creatures able to roam around.
This is great especially on unlimited movement.  I am designing a maze map and it great seeing them wander about the maze.

~>No upgrades !
This is better than it predessor.  It make recruit them from dwelling far more easier than before.

~>Set levels and a decision must be made for that level.
Dont know about this one

~>Isometric Combat view
Much much better than the 2d Combat.  More realistic and more fun

~>Line of Sight
No problem here again add to the fun

~>Spellcasters in the form of creatures
This makes them more unique and greater choice for the user to pick.

~>Hero classes, class abilities!
This is alo superb giveing them abilities for dual class.  I dont know if they get more skills added on when they get extra classes added on.

~>no specialty heroes!
I must admit i do miss the speciality class for the Heroes, however if they ever incorparate them again them every heroes must have a specialitiy that is just as important as other heroes.  Heroes have good specialities and also right rotten one as well making everyone picking out their own favoutie ie Solyr, Adela etc.

All Heroes should have equal but important specialities

Another mistake in Map editor

Also in the Map Editor you cant flag random creatures but you can flag the normal creauress.

You also cant put them in the script if you wanted to create a choice for the heroes because there is no random slection for this..
