What's your favorite town type?

What's your favorite town?

Mines either nature or order.

Nature because of how many creatures you can get, and since most of them are great! For example, phoeni are fast and have breath attack. Fairy Dragons are excellent spellcasters. Manitises are extremely strong and have first strike AND banding. Not to mention the nature magic's summoning spells, which means you can fight the battle without really ever losing anything!

Order probably just because of how cool the creatures are! I mean, titans and genies, who could ask for more? Plus the spells are also very useful.

~Top !~

Mine is order too...mainly because of those cool creatures like robo dragon, titans, but also because of those fun magics...

Then is death.  Death magic can also be fun, and they got cool creatures like vamp and bone dragons.

Least favourite is human...their background music is distracting...but angel's icon looks cool though.

My first choice would also have to be order also.

Second would be nature because i am quite good with them

Third for me would probably be might because i like the whole strength thing

I simply love order.

The mages are a pain to protect, their poison spell does not require line of sight and is perfect to use against those hidden behind castle walls (I hope they haven't changed it in a patch or anything). Too bad that mages become almost useless once their spell points run out. Wish there was a way to "feed" them magic potions.

The genies can kick with their ice bolt, mirth and create illusion.

But the best things are their spells. Teleport, Town Gate and steal enchantment. Teleport can hardly be overemphasized. Get those rangers on the tower among your troops and blow them to hell. Or keep teleporting those darned behemoths away as your rangers decrease their numbers. It's all so much fun.

Plus, with 1 hero, mages, genies, halflings and titans, you get a massive 5 ranger party. I'm a ranger freak as the next few lines show.

After order, Life is great. Nice powerful rangers. Nature has elves and Faerie dragons. Might comes next with cyclops (no range counterattack). Medusas are quite valueable with the stoning. I guess Death's vemon spawns come last because for some reason, I prefer the stoning over the poison.

Mine's is Death !

Death has some strong units avilable:
Skaletons - good at protecting ranged units and absorbing range attacks
Imps - Fast, and Drain mana (goodbye Angels and Phoenixes)
Ghosts - weak, but fast. High growth, aging...
Cerberi - Also week, but no retelation.
Mummies - "Curse" is average, but when it works 100 % it's good though.
Gargoyles - The least usefull unit
Venom spawn - The 3rd best shooter avilable, Poison, Very good Town defender... Has HP 100.
Vampires - need explain ?
Ice Demons - They are slow, but can handily defeat Genies and WE.
Devils - fast Hero killers.
Bone Dragons - 2nd lvl.4 Avilable, No retelation, skeletal, That means, that Bone dragons take less damage from ranged creatures. One thing is bad, that thier panic pulls shooters away...
Dark Champions - These are strong too... 3X Terror, can give a headache... And regenerates...

Magic: Death Magic is not very powerfull at low levels, but It's true power reveals from level 3 spells. But Sacrifice is not worthy at all...

Devils are really valueable in seige combat. Hit and run. And Death magic has some pretty useful spells. Mass Sorrow, Plague, Poison and that Hand of Death (the best way to kill a hero in Line of Sight). However, most other spells really aren't that useful or maybe I didn't use them that much.

But I'll say this. For once, repeat, for once, it's as much fun playing from one town as it is from another. This is something that wasn't present in earlier heroes. Every town has something you'd want to give your eyes for (mages or genies in order, crossbows or pikemen in Life, venom spawn or vampires in Death, Faerie Dragons or elves in Nature, Medusas or Black Dragons in Chaos). And for once, a non-magic town imposes a lot of threat for the others. Simply loaded with hit points plus that 50% extra growth. Harpies and Cyclops are my favourites in there.

Hats off to the game developers. Now if only patching was that easy......

Now to my opinion...

Right now I am leaning towards either the Academy or the Preserve as my favourite town. And here are the resons:

ACADEMY
- Order magic is one of the most versatile. Mind control, illusion creation, a good damage spell and mass slow are the highlights.
- Genies are superpower level 3's. Their illusion/song of peace/ice bolt makes them unstoppable in large numbers.
- Halflings are decent level 1's and dragon golems are fearsome level 4's (and titans).
- Easy access to Life Magic (resurrection) and Nobility (get those money and creatures!) University and treasury beef u this town greatly.

PRESERVE
- Summoning is a very good skill - free creatures every day! Much more powerful and better than either Necromancy (must kill living units) or charm (most of the time it is rather useless, who wants tiddly amounts of mixed troops in their army?) I believe it is beaten only by resurrection.
- 6 creature generators instead of 5, and the sixth generator is a very powerful one indeed, if you leave out  the leprechauns, satyrs and earth elementals. Water elementals are da bomb.
- Easy access to life magic (resurrection is a must!) and Chaos Magic (get those killer spells!) Nature magic is mostly summoning, but it does have some useful spells like snake strike and stoneskin.

I also like Stronghold (there's safety in numbers!), and Haven (resurrection and blesses rock!)

I don't really like the Necropolis or Asylum that much.

chaos are not very great against order...cause of their titan stuff.  Also if chaos use black dragon, they would have a difficult time against nature's phoenix.  And chaos magics are mainly damaging magic, which are less useful.

I thought Black dragons were THE way to handle order. Immune to all freakin' spells and this means your mages are can't do a thing to them (they'd have to poison other troops, while blackies run around). Genie can help by creating titan illusions but it's still not the same thing as slow or ice bolt. Halflings are good as long as they aren't hit. That leaves your heroes mostly, to do the job. And if you've got a hero who isn't good in the Combat skills, he's dead.

Truly, black dragons are hateful. Grrrr.... (but I love 'em when I'M controlling them ).

Order started as one of most powerfull towns for me, but went down lately. Genies, altho good are not THAT good.

1. Order army is soo slow for scouting, if you play an open map where there are some freebies you are at a big disadvantage (only life is as slow, and death is best with their imps)
2. On some very poor maps at higher difficulties genies may be hard to get early
3. Genies are totally helpless vs Blackies (chaos) and almost helpless vs water elementals (nature).
4. There is 1 mistake difference between wining the battle with no losses and losing the battle. Genies must be handled with extreme care.
5. Always have dispell or cancelation vs order to get rid of the illusions, and your heroes should have magic resistance.

Order (genies) are great against AI, but a skilled human can neutralize them fairly easy.

Order has it's advantages too.

For one thing, it is quite effective against stronger armies of melee units. Mages can poison them, halflings can do extra damage to level 4 while genies can slow them down. And the song of peace rules. This makes it very easy to clear out the surrounding areas with an order army. Since your army doesn't even have to move, and you have two "rangers" with no "ranged retaliation" (magi and genies), it is more effective vs other rangers than compared to other towns. Nature's water elementals are good, but that creature portal is quite expensive (genie dwelling is costlier, but I think the creature portal has some other requirements too).

And order's strength lies in the fact that you keep the enemy away. If they reach your ranks, then it becomes a lot more difficult.

But against black dragons, genies aren't ENTIRELY useless. They can clone the titans or halflings to take care of the blackies. Or just take out other enemies. A single genie can be put in another stack for slowing and mirth.

Regarding the no losses victory, I place my order army in the tighest possible formation. Two heroes and my genie stack in the very front. In the second row, from the left, a single genie, mages and titans. At the very back, halflings. When against other rangers or spellcasters, the two heroes protect the army behind them. The genies can either take out the enemy or cast illusion that comes in front of them to eat up ranged attacks and spells. It's served me quite well, but I've been playing against AI. It would be a lot harder to play against humans.

Of course order has advantages, everyone seems to think that they are among the best
my post was about it's weeknesses.

I never ever build magi in MP game, they die like flies. Order army with genies and magi is too fragile for me. It may work vs AI, but not vs human.

About cloning the halflings to kill blackies - that was a good joke . Genies can illusion the same number of health points no matter what creature. So, do you rather have 300 HP of titans or halflings? Always illusion the highest level troop you can.

I think death, chaos and might are the three best castles but my favorite town is Nature(preserve), because I just simply love the units there. Especially those fantastic Faery dragons and water elementals. Also elfs are good.

Nature is quite nice to play with, but it lacks rangers. The first ranger is the second level elf which is VERY expensive to get early on because you need to build the ranger's guild first which is around 3000 gold and some 20 wood, I think. Then the treetop lodge. And, I really don't think they're as good as Grand Elves in heroes 3 were. They were fast, powerful, looked a whole lot cooler....and didn't shoot arrows before they had pulled their bow to the max (in h4, the elves actually "continue" to pull the bow for a few milliseconds after the arrow has been released, little animation flaw). Griffins are a no brainer over unicorns (if you choose unicorns, tell me why). If you are able to get expert death magic and the aura of fear spell from another town, you can cast this on them along with snake strike and WHAM!!! they're untouchable. Faerie dragons are quite powerful, and very annoying with that magic mirror and the creature portal is best used for water elementals.

But the problem that persists is that you get the rangers quite late on a low resource map, so starting things become difficult. You have to rely on the sprite's no retaliation a lot since wolves die fast.

I know it's stupid, but for some reason i ALWAYS choose unicorns over griffins. I have no idea why. I think it's juts because of how powerful they were in the other games (HOMM2), and cuz I like to summon my griffins. Thay way, you're never losing any, which you would normally since most of them are pretty much just kamikaze (I mean, you just send your griffins over to the enemy and wait for them to attack!)
Late in the Erwin campaign, I found a great solution to the few ranged creature problem in the Preserve. I know this oppurtunity won't come in most maps, but I got a special bow artifact (I think it was the Bow of the Elfen King, but I'm not sure) that let all your creatures fire an extra shot each turn! That's 3 shots for your elves and 2 shots for your hero (most likely)! It was extremely useful, especially late in the game.
Anyway, the fact that the preserve also has life and chaos magic is also useful- healing magic is great, and direct damage shortens those annoyingly long battles sometimes.
Since wolves do die too easily, I just don't get them! I just take two heroes and then the creature portal takes care of the empty space with mantises, one of the best creatures ever.

That elven king bow is an ultimate, and can't be found easily...like 10% percent of chance per game.  So don't count on items.  If it's so easy to get, then order will be so happy, cause nothing beats a titan with 2 strikes.
