Is It Just Me, Or Do Others Miss Choosing Their Starting Hero?

I mean, granted, every hero of a starting class is identical, but I would like some option to pick who I start with.  After all, I have a few favorites (just because I'm going to be staring at that picture for the entire game, and some I'd rather never see on my screen at all.)

Also, does anybody else out there miss the fact that the heroes in III are at least somewhat unique?  Now there is absolutely no difference between taking Sorsha and taking Dallas, or any other knight that happens to show up.

I agree, I miss it too. I wan't to choose my starting hero. I don't like it if I get lord instead of mage when I play Order. Yes, I know; I can purchase the mage from the tavern. But I usually prefer knight over lord in the start. However, that portrait thing doesn't brother me although I may have some favourite heroes. I'd like to have a new hero in the every game and then read it's biography.

It's not just you.  I tend to prefer female heroes, and I don't want to sit there looking at Hexx for several hours while the AI plays with my beloved Charna.    It's hard to care what happens to your hero if you don't really want them working for you in the first place.

Personally i always play crag hack if i can as my main hero. he is the only hero that hasnt had his avatar changed for the worse throughout all the heroes series. Crag hack always looks cool. Too bad you cant select your hero portrait before you start.

Crag Hack's Avatar

I don't know about it always beeing cool.

Seems that the avatar in H2 was sort of dopey.  I'll have to go back and check it out.  (May take a bit of doing as you don't get to choose your starting hero there either.  Hmm, the great leap backwards?)

Come on, all portraits in HOMM2 had a certain style. In that context Crag Hack's portrait was cool as well. The only barbarian with a horned helm. And a grin to match

Trying to find heroes in older versions of the game is pesky.  I spent about fourty-five minutes trying to see for myself that Sandro was in Heroes I as a warlock (then spent the next fourty-five minutes listening to my brother explain that we are now to refer to him as "Thundax the Barbarian").  An easier way:  http://www.mmportals.com/h2/heroes.htm.    They haven't added H4 portraits, but all the portraits from I-III, plus expansion packs, are there.

I miss it an awful lot.  I know I'm increadbly shallow, but I like chosing heroes based on three things:- the first is their speciality, the second the skills I know from experiance they are likely to be offered and the third is looks.  I know the third is shallow but I see not reason why I should be forced to look at an ugly personification of myself... which is what your hero becomes, especially in longer games.

Although H4 has kindly decimated my starting criteria with their bizzarre heroe system except for the aesthtic criteria, not knowing who I'm starting with always irritates me.. especially when confronted with minger after minger.  More often than not, I have dumped my starting hero in the garrison and traded them in for one which suits my shallow personality better.  Do I want to be a lich?  No!  I wanna be that cute vampire guy

I also miss the specialities... they could give you a huge advantage.  Not in that the heroes where "better" than each other, but in that it was possible to chose a hero suited to you playing style.  I like using ranged troops so I chose Ivor for Rampart, Valeshka for Castle.  I also liked Tyris as although her speciality was chaverliers (pretty powerful creatures) she also advanced very quickly with her tactics, which was useful to my style of play.  Heroes like Christian and Gerwulf were of no use to me as I ralerly use balistas.  I also favour Neela for most castles, thanks to her aptitue with magic and armourer skill.

For a scout, a useful hero to have is one who specialises in estates or contributes gold to your cause, as they give you extra revenue, but are generally rubbish at anything else.  Also, if you expect to be covering long distances, logistics and pathfinding help... so Dessa is a good choice.

I want my hero choice back, but only if we can have specialities worth choosing again... and the starting bonus back n all, while you're at it.

I also chose my starting hero in 3 for specialty and then looks.

Although one of the things that not haveing hero specialties has elimenated is the rules like no 4th level starting hero or logistics hero.  Because you have to admit that those were cheap a lot of times.

I really wish you were able to pick your hero though.  I mean have you looked at Lumentia the Necromancer.  She looks really freaky with those eyes. Or Rab the rabid vampire is just as cool.

One of the things I hate is maps that start you off with some levels but you have no choice as too which heroe class you get.

I'm bored so i'll add my 2 cents to this topic. I made a script on a map im working on that lets you choose your hero from 6 starting ones, and which also gives the heroes different specialties. It is a cool script with lots of possibilities.

I like the fact that players cannot choose their starting hero.

If you want to choose it, play a map with no starting hero (and yours will be the one who you choose from the Tavern, trust me)

I kinda like the whole thing of getting a pre-picked hero class, but i would really like to be able to choose the picture. I mean it's the two heroes that you've got coming straight out the gates and straight into the monsters/treasure chests/learning stones/whatever from the get-go that are going to be pretty much THE focus of your game, and considering that so many of the portraits look completely ridiculous *cough*order*cough*, theres a good chance that one of them is going to spend the whole game pissing you off. And sure in singleplayer you can sit the starter in your city and hire a new one after a week, which i often personally do, in multiplayer thatd be a deathwish.
