IMHO, the graphics in H4 were better than in the previous versions, especialy the battlefield. I'm sure Heroes don't need real 3D graphics (at least now), but graphical system of HMM1/2/3 is too old now. So the answer is something between those two variants - for me, H4 isometric view suits very well here.

Oh yes, I wonder how hell buggy the game would be if 3DO dares to release it in full 3D...
But as far as I know HMM5 is going to be released in 4th quarter of 2003. Even with legions of bugs, NWC will never get it in time!

"Rendered 3D graphics into 2D pictures" is still better.

"3D Mesh plus texture" require a lot of spaces (MBs) on CDs/DVD and also require advanced PC. Instead of wasting that spaces for 3D, they can use the spaces for more creatures, animations, spells, towns, etc..

but most important is gameplay...

I think Heroes IV is great in terms of graphics. Something similar for the next game would be great.

The problem I think with 2D graphics is that new buyers for this game will be less impressed. Although some of you might indeed have old and unperformant computers, most new games today are all 3D. To have a fair chance at the PC market, Heroes must be 3D.

Where did you hear this information? That's the first I've heard of it. If HOMM5 was scheduled for late 2003 the hype machine would have started by now. But AFAIK they have made any official announcement on HOMM5 yet, just the second expansion to HOMM4.

My opinion

Most people I know don't like Homm4 because of its:

a) graphics
b) bugs, lack of multiplayer for loong time, balance.

I agree with sentence that h4 graphics is poor overall. Especially town screens (do you remember Fortress ?), and adventure map (very, very unclear and plastic-like). Combat screen is acceptable, sometimes even impressive.

I think h4 rendered graphics were made on rush.

I'd vote for true 3D graphics if it's made in proper way. 3D graphics can be truly outstanding.Neverwinter Nights, CnC-Generals, DooM III....

In battles I hope it will be 2D graphics,as that would mean a more realistic battleground.
I mean,a more strategic battleground.
However, the towns and heros I hope it would be in 3D,and of course the tunnels,dwellings..etc

A new thing though,I would like to say is that I hope there will be horses, donkeys etc... for heros to ride on,and also there are those heros with no horses!
Build stables to buy animals for your heros..
The better the animal, the further your hero can travel!

This is good idea. Remembering me to "Battle Realms".
But thats require a new mesh/graphics for every heroes type.

However 3DO should learn from Age of Wonders 2 magic effects.

My suggestion:

Stop playing on your '1337' 300Mhz computers with 64RAM. Go out get a job and buy yourself a decent computer before you start whining about system reqs.

Facts:

3D looks WAY better than 2d - it doesn't even compare. look at Warcraft III, Age of Mythology, hell even Age of Wonders II has awesome effects, completely outclassing H4 in graphics.

Most of you apes fail to realize that MANY people look at graphics. If they see a game with graphics from early 90s they won;t buy the game even if its awesome with great balance, gameplay etc.

It will NOT slow multiplayer. If your system meets requirement you will have NO problems. I have a powerful comp (Athlon XP 2000+) with 56K modem and I never had problems playing any 3d RTS games. Why? Because if your comp handles the game well, its all up to connection. If I get choppy gameplay its always the connections fault.

I was extremely upset when Heroes IV was not in 3d (a great game ruined by atrocious graphics, (even Disciples II was better, wtf?)so my vote is DEFINATLY heroes 5 should be 3d.

Yes but that means everyone has to upgrade their computer machines to nmake their system more powerful to accommodate the 3D graphics if it ever appears on Heroes V.

I think not.

3D graphics are very good but only use in the context of cut scenes etc.  for gameplay it can be either good or bad.  there are some game that have very good 3d graphics and others that just stink.

2D graphics are far more safer as well as more effective and if it can be made to look like 3D than that is an added bonus.

Don't forget Heroes series is a Fantasy Strategy game with more emphasis on gameplay, tactics and sheer enjoyment.  The graphics would be second fiddle to this but is still consider by many to be important like myself.

Heroes IV 2D Graphics are simply the best of the Series graphics.

Long May it continue

Hmm...

I agree that the "not-too-high-spec-req"-argument doesn't hold water.

New games will always have increasingly higher requirements.

The question here, I believe, is what looks best. Going back to the combat model of HOMMIII I would think highly unlikely. Despite the flaws and bugs of the HOMMIV battle screen, it still looks much better than in HOMMIII.

What does not look better, however, is the adventure and town screens of HOMMIV. They look like something from Mattel (Barbie). I much prefer both the HOMMII & III versions of these.

Gameplay first, you say, and I'm inclined to agree. But atmosphere, in a fantasy setting game like this, comes a close second, for me at least. And graphics (alongside music) is the biggest factor there. So I wouldn't say graphics are unimportant, on the contrary, I would say it is a very important aspect of the game.

So what is my conclusion? Do I want 2D, 3D or a mix? The truth is, I don't really know, and I don't really care. I want the game to look good. Period. If they do that with 1D or 13D, I couldn't care less.

Personally, I thought HOMMII was a beautiful game. Sure, a bit gaudy on the color schemes at times, but all in all, I would rate it highest on atmosphere of all the HOMM games. I don't measure good graphics in pixels or number of dimensions. I measure them on how they look.

[quote/]My point is, as long as I play single, I am fine with all the dandy graphics but they have to make the game playable for people without 3D cards - first of all, HOMM is a strategic quest! Gameplay over graphics.
I wouldn't like to play CIV1 now, as its graphics are really outdated. But it is not the case with HOMM, as there is enough power in today's 2D to produce very nice looking creatures/towns/adventure maps. One cannot say the same about 3D.

This is the point fellas!
I think the developers should worry about much more urgent things, like the freaking COMPUTER AI! It sucked so bad in heroes IV. Who cares about 3D? Why should the developers of such a respectable series go with the vogue and follow the 3D crowd. I much prefer 2D since it keeps things simple while still looking pretty. Who can honestly complain about the Heroes IV graphics? We dont need 3D yet, let the first person shooters go berzerk on that. Making heroes 3d will delay it NEEDLESSLY, when the time should be much better spent on imporoving the gameplay.

I WONDER IF ANY OF YOU HAS PLAYED "SHOGUN TOTAL WAR" OR "MEDIEVAL TOTAL WAR".....
2D ADVENTURE MAP AND 3D BATTLES. THOSE GAMES RULE!!! AND HOMM5 WOULD RULE TOO IF IT WILL BE LIKE THEM. IMAGINE: HEROES 5 TOTAL WAR. AT THE BEGINNING OF A BATTLE YOU CAN ARRANGE TROUPS IF U HAVE TACTICS, YOUR HERO WOULD CAST A  STARTING SPELL. THEN THE BATTLE BEGINS. YOUR FAST TROUPS AND FLYERS SCOUT THE MAP, YOUR RANGED ATTAC TROUPS WILL BEGIN TO SHOOT. AS THE TIME PASSES, YOUR HERO RECHARGES HIS MANA AND CAST A NEW SPELL. ALSO, TROUPS BEGIN TO BE TIRED. YOU CAN CLIMB MOUNTAINS, HIDE IN THE FORESTS. ETC, ETC, ETC...

my vote goes to a 2D main map view. Maybe a 3D battlefield view, but still undecided about that lol.

quasi-3d grapics

have had a difficult idea about map or battle screen for some time, but it was kind of difficult to explain. now i think i thought of a version of it that could be explained a bit more easily.

as far as i understand, 3d graphics has most trouble with the foreground appearing made up of polygons. and imho the point here is that 3d and 2d objects are not significantly different when you look at the objects from a sufficienlty long distance (i hope i'm correct here).

the foreground would be in 2d using sprites like we have seen in homm, and starting from some distance in the background you start to reduce the size of the sprites that are further away. this way you should get some kind of of perspective and overlapping (cannot see behind a map object) effect in the background with 2d graphics. the only thing that you would have to do in 3d would be the earth surface, i guess.

disclaimer:
no,
1) i am not a principal supporter of 3d, especially in a game like homm. it's just that i am a supporter of medieval style graphics in homm environment, and i started to think that the atmosphere of one nice type of medieval paintings might not be possible to reproduce because of the viewpoint being too high above the ground, totally elliminating the perspective effects.
2) it's just some thought that popped into my head, and i am not really expecting this to be implemented in homm5. homm5 graphics seems to be decided upon and there might even be no people here who would find such discussion interesting, but maybe there are and this is also something that i would like to know.

so it would have the classical 2d map or battle screen or whatever in the foreground where you move your hero and creatures. in the background the reduced size of the 2d pictures would create a perspective effect. also, in the background you cannot see behind a mountain or forest etc to the extent you can in the familiar homm games.

this way you would probably still have a view of a reasonably large portion of the map, but the viewpoint would be lower.

My Preferences

I want HeroesV to be what I call: "Final Fantasy VII/VIII-D" as opposed to only 2-D or only 3-D.

They had the perfect setup. I want all that, 2-D portraits, and cut scenes for drama. You simply have to incorporate 3-D...period. But let's not lose the especially high definition portrait art. And I loved the battle scenes in FF7/8. I think now is the time to upgrade an FF7/8 type battle scene with DOOM3 graphics, then use that template for H-5 sieges/battles. And any serious gamer loves the high definition 3-D cut drama scenes that are prerecorded(this would be best for single plyr and not multi) for those lonely campaigns that last for hours and hours.
