Playtesting

Where do people go to find playtesters for their maps?  Once a mapmaker has spent hours and hours pouring over the one map, it can be hard to objectively test it, to say nothing of needing an outside opinion on storytelling.  Where to go?

Well, there seems to be a need to test player made maps.  Many of these threads have popped up already at the Lands over time.  Allow me to nominate this thread to the official 'Playtesting thread'.

In this thread you can post a link to your map, or your email address along with some information about the map, testers can post their comments here too.

yay!

Informal playtest needed:

The first scenario of my campaign is pretty much finished, and it would be great if someone could playtest it.  It is a small map with no underground, no AI colors, lots of monsters set to "wander," and a moderate amount of scripts/events.  There is no time limit, but preliminary tests have ended around the middle of month 2; heroes are limited to level 12; the map is designed for one of the middlish difficulties -- it's not much fun on Novice, and Champion is near impossible (for me).  A couple of scripts have randomly decided not to work in certain tests, but I'm not sure if that's my fault or 3DO's.  I'd like feedback on story, gameplay, and bugs.

(The campaign itself will be four maps long, but the story for this one is relatively self-contained.)

My e-mail is khaelo@yahoo.com.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you.

Sure, why not?  You may send it to my email address here.  I don't have a lot of time, so it might take a while before I get back to you for a review, but I wanna give that campaign map a try

Warning!

This map is unplayable with Mobile Guards! Do not try it that way!

(I've been blocked on day 6 by Dozens of Nightmares.)

Tried it again. Well, those Nightmares are there all the way. But, and that is very strange: the monsters keep moving even if I set "stationary guards". How can it be? (Champion difficulty)

They may have movement radius set from the map editor.

OK.

But they seem to move into the worst places (for me). If I am too close to them (that means 7 squares or so), they just move towards me and attack.

Anyways, I've just encountered some Efreeti who said they would join me. They did not join me, instead I got the message: will you fight them? And no matter what I choose, no fight take place and no Efreeti I get.

Is this intentional?

Bug 1: Efreeti will move out of their place and thus you shall never get any Efreeti. The game still can be won in two ways:

1st: Visiting Pyriel's hut only after killed everything guarding the Efreeti in the corner, then attackking them in that turn.

2nd: Just wait lots of days until you have enough gold to get 50 mercury in the Marketplace.

Bug 2: There is way too much experience on the map. That is not a big problem, however.

Bug 3: One does not even need to cross the river. It is easy to collect enough resorces in the right side (in not too much days) and change them all to Mercury in the Trading Post.

Problem 4: Everything moves on the map. You should remove this. Plus, I don't know why did you place 50 Nightmares at the way to the Efreeti, but that was definitly a mistake. Yes, I will defeat them once in the far future, but that is still annoying.

For the record, and I probably should have made this clearer from the start, the map is supposed to be played with mobile guards, and it is not intended to be played at Champion (or Novice either, for that matter).  At lower difficulties, the Nightmares are scary, but not impossible.  On [Advanced], I've either defeated the Nightmares with heavy losses, or simply run away from them until they go somewhere out of the way.

Bug 1:  The Efreeti are indeed supposed to join you.  Specifically, you're supposed to get 12 of them.  The fight/flee window is a bug, but I can't do anything about it.  The map editor won't let you directly hand over neutral creatures when encountered, so you have to use a roundabout way of giving creatures which involves killing off the original creatures.  Unfortunately, if your army outpowers the creatures, they'll offer to fight/flee you before going off to their doom.  Even if you say you'll fight, they'll go die first, so you should never have to fight Efreeti. But you should get some.  Since the script works some of the time and not others, I thought it was my laptop that caused the problem, but apparently not.    Off to script help threads for me...

Bug 2:  What do you mean by "too much experience?"  Too many power-ups?  Too many creatures?  Both are easily fixed.

Bug 3:  Of course you can just sit on your behind and change money to mercury.  But that's no fun.

Bug 4:  There is stuff that does not move on the map.  You just didn't find it, thanks to those stubborn Efreeti, without which you don't get access to the second part of the map.  In the initial forest section, everything is supposed to move, but I can certainly cut down the total number of stacks.  Would that help?

Thank you so much for the input.

Edit:  Um, I'm on the wrong machine for mailing the map right now, Nidhgrin, but it looks like it needs some serious help anyway.    Sorry about this mess...

Edit 2:  Corrected the difficulty level of testing above.  I was using Advanced, not Intermediate.  My brother tested the map on Novice (he'd never played H4 before), and it was ridiculously easy, even for someone who asked if he could do anything with the scary-face trees he spotted in the scenery.

Also, I've made some major adjustments based on the comments above but would like to retract my "need playtesters" call until the efreeti issue is sorted out.
