Chat Zone Dedicated to ToH

Hello,

Have the members of the board of ToH ever thought of designing a chat engine similar to GameSpy and MSN Gaming Zone hosted by ToH?

The way I see it is that a special software download can be accessed from the ToH website.

Hence, the only users on this newly designed chat engine would be ToH members.

Is this feasible without incurring much costs $$$?

possible...

but I wouldnt pay for it.  It would verrry expensive to maintain something like a gamespy or zone.  Ive paid enough already.

It would be very bad for toh to do that I think.

It would isolate toh members from the rest of the world, and that would end the recruitment that takes place when the new players see that "everyone is in toh"

Itīs actually no different that what you would do if you wanted to punish toh for something by putting it in a solitary cell..  To lock it away from the eyes of the world and have it slowly die out, like a fire robbed of new fuel.

Thatīs why I think its a crazy idea.

I see your point bjorn

but what I would do is have it both on the toh server and the gamespy or whatever.  So gaming would go on both fronts.  But again, it would be too costly so its a non-issue anyways.

An IRC channel is probably the best option. A chat applet could easily be installed on the ToH site for people who don't have MIRC installed (check out ours at http://www.strategyplanet.com/homm/chat). Problem is, players will be scattered through GameSpy (for H3 and H4), the Zone (for H3) and an IRC channel (for H4). But it might be worth it.

been there, done that

actually not me directly; but both hommbastards tourn and a subgroup of ToH both tried the IRC chat thing for the tourns; and that was during peak of homm3 activity.  They failed miserably.

So not a good idea -- anyways, you can chat in gamespy just fine, and it has various chat options.  Zone was just more chat friendly though.

zone was much better for finding games, etc.
but gamespy is better for chatting; you can talk in the main lobby or you can open a private chat tab with someone, which is much better than ZM's which were small windows which popped up incessently in your face.

k, i rest my case...but i still think that an irc channel called let's say...#toh would be nice.
1. No money involved. So nothing to lose.
2. It requires much less resources than the GSA, almost none at all. When i'm playing a long map (showdown let's say) for 8-10 hours i allways close the gsa just to speed up a lil' the connection. Between turns i would love to talk to my friends (bob, valkyrica, the_teacher, azuredragonTM, kopa (), hidden&the others and maybe to ignore my "archenemies" ...let me think...yes, prince legolas
3. I've heard 'bout ppl having troubles with the gsa...here you can set up an ip match without problems...
4. ...

Think about again. The toh comunity has nothing to lose imho. If i can't get your support i'll try to do it myself. But i hope we'll be in the same boat

* Now talking in #toh

There was always the easily created rooms at the Zone too.  I never had a problem keeping the zm's off when I didn't want them either.....especially if in the game and still chatting in the zone.  I have yet to visit gamespy though since both times I started registering I decided not to because it wreaked of advertising and I am not wanting to generate junk mail and it sure seemed possible with their registering and advertising campaign.

I do realize revenues need to be created or there is not company, but still maybe some other methods would help the site more?

If you ever had a friend who wasnt good at conveying their thought at once... meaning they would say something, then add a little, then add a little (thus making multiple messages in succesion) you will know that Gamespy is better for chat.  And about advertising, just download the patch that gets rid of ads.  And anyway, even if you dont d/l the patch that gets rid of ads, there's only 2 quick ads which you can close immediately, right when you open the program, and after that there are none.  So really the ads take up none of your time at all.

And no, you dont get junk mail from Gamespy.

Also, getting on gamespy is quicker than Zone.  Zone was good about this, until they got the whole ".net" b u l l s h i t where you had to log in to your ".net" passport.

Everyone keeps ragging on Gamespy but it isnt bad at all.  It isnt great, but it has no flaws, it works fine, and has a good chat system.  I think the reason people are snowing about it is just because there havent been that many people in the rooms (usually 45 tops).  That isnt Gamespy's fault, but Heroes 4's.

Also, its "reek" not "wreak"

Just another comment on GameSpy activity, ppl might think that it's quieter than it actually is because a lot of the chatting doesn't happen in the main lobby, it's happening in private chat. I don't know if it was the same in the Zone, but maybe ppl think that there's less going on there than there actually is.

Thank you everyone for your input. From what I gather based on comments so far:

- a dedicated chat system is feasible but $$$
- IRC, Gamespy, Zone, ICQ are all mediums which can be combined together
- there may be a risk of isolating ToH from the rest of the world

The reason I posted this thread in the first place was to find ways to increase ToH popularity. Yes, Toh has been growing since its conception, but I do believe that it is not growing fast enough. As a newbie, the most frustrating thing is to have to deal with "cliques". Why won't good players play lesser players.......I mean, if your so good, if you are a semi-God-like player, why not prove it by beating newbies or lesser players. It has been stated in the threads that activity in GameSpy seems low because many players chat privately, but hey, it's not by chatting privately amongst ourselves that ToH popularity will increase.

Lets have all Heroes IV players around the world be members of ToH; thats my vision.

Now, to get back to Bjorn........but that comment above seems like a quote that you got from a philosophical movie. I strongly disagree with you. A dedicated ToH chat line would not solve a problem............it would improve the site. There are no problems with the ToH website or structure. Secondly, I do not agree with you when you state that trying to solve problems that don't really exist is a sign of boredom or being out of focus......I see it more as being imaginative and creative, with a touch of intelligence.

I understand your frustration.  In any social environment there are "cliques," and it's always difficult to "break in" to a given clique when you're new.  But there are plenty of people out there in the same boat who are new and just looking for someone to play.  You're exactly the kind of person they want to meet.  Play them.

As for why high ranking players sometimes avoid games with low-ranking ones, that's because it's considered dishonorable to play too many low-ranking people.  The feeling here is that a fair game is one between people of equal or near-equal rank.  It's not that a higher-ranking person doesn't want to play you.  It's that they want a more challenging, more honorable game.  Not to say that your game skills aren't good, but players have only past experience and your record to go by in assessing your skills.  As your record (and your rank) improves, it will become increasingly easier to get games from higher-ranking players.

just my 2 cents

hm

I don't really see why there would be any need for a new chat room, every time i've gone to gamespy no one talks unless i see some old friends there and we start yakkin, the conversations never go beyond 'come to game2' then 'ok' then more silence

I think the new Heroes4ers seem very antisocial! so there

P.S Happy Birthday Lealth

Actually it looks to me by looking at top player records they avoid each other lol.  Only time they end up fighting is when they hit on the clan wars.
