Nuclear Knowledge!

I found this on CNN.com

These countries have the bomb:
-U.S.  -
Arsenal and missile range: 12,000 warheads; 8,100 miles (13,000km)

Nuclear weapons are located in 14 states. New Mexico, Georgia, Washington, Nevada, and North Dakota are the top five and account for about 70 percent of the total. The other nine are Wyoming, Missouri, Montana, Louisiana, Texas, Nebraska, California, Virginia, and Colorado. The number of U.S. nuclear weapons in Europe has shrunk dramatically, from over 6,000 of many types in the early 1980s to some 150 B61 bombs at ten air bases in seven countries (Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Turkey, and the United Kingdom) by the end of 1997. The United States is the only country with nuclear weapons deployed outside its borders.

-U.K.  -Arsenal and missile range: 380 warheads; 7,500 miles (12,000 km)

The British stockpile is about to be turned into a single weapon type -- the Trident II missile on Vanguard-class submarines. In 1998, the last WE-177 gravity bombs were retired, and the Tornado bombers that once carried them will have only conventional missions.

-Russia  -Arsenal and missile range: 22,500 warheads; 6,800 miles (11,000 km)

Weapons are deployed at about 90 sites in Russia. In a little-appreciated logistical feat, Soviet, and then Russian, members of the 12th Main Directorate have consolidated, over the past decade, a far-flung arsenal of tens of thousands of nuclear weapons at hundreds of locations in Eastern Europe and 14 republics to under a hundred sites in Russia today.

-China  -Arsenal and missile range: 400 warheads; 6,800 miles (11,000 km)

The Chinese stockpile is located at some 20 sites.

-India  -Arsenal and missile range: 12-18 warheads; 1,550 miles (2,500 km)

India first decided to build its own nuclear weapons after China began nuclear tests in the mid-1960s. A key factor in India's desire to be a nuclear power has been China's presence on its northern border as well as Pakistan's nuclear capability.

Indian scientists claim the five devices tested in 1998 included one with an explosive yield of 43 kilotons - more than twice the force inflicted on Hiroshima in 1945.

-Pakistan  -Arsenal and missile range: 12-18 warheads; 930 miles (1,500 km)

Thought to have begun its secret weapons program in 1972 to reach parity with India, but restricted by U.S. sanctions since 1990. Tested a medium range missile in April of 1998. The following month, Pakistan responded to India's tests with six of its own.

-France  -Arsenal and missile range: 450 warheads; 3,300 miles (5,300 km)

The French stockpile consists of three types of warheads at four locations, down from a dozen bases at the beginning of the 1990s.

Undeclared Nuclear Nations:
-Israel  -Israel refuses to confirm or deny the widespread belief that it has the bomb, but it is believed to have over 100 atomic weapons. The center of Israel's weapons program is reported to be the Negev Nuclear Research Center near the desert town of Dimona. Former Prime Minister Shimon Peres in a rare television interview recently made a public admission that Israel began developing a "nuclear option" in the 1950s.

Suspected Nuclear Nations:
-Iraq  -Iraq had its nuclear program dismantled under United Nations auspices after its defeat in the 1991 Gulf War.

-Iran  -Iran launched a nuclear program in the 1970s but slowed it down after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The U.S. believes Iran is developing weapons using its nuclear power program.

-N. Korea  -North Korea put its atomic program on hold in 1994 but recently threatened to resume it if Washington did not deliver promised nuclear power plants. Under a landmark 1994 accord, the U.S. pledged to replace Pyongyang's graphite reactors, which are capable of producing weapons-grade material, with the safer light-water plants.

-Libya  -Analysts believe that while Libya may be unable to develop a bomb, it has the money and apparently the desire to buy nuclear technology from the former Soviet Union. What's stopping it, they say, is a strict embargo.

Those Who Gave Up:
-Argentina  -Pursued weapons programs in the 1980s but a new democratic government decided that a change in policy was needed. By 1990, signed a treaty for a nuclear-weapons-free zone in Latin America.

-Brazil  -Active nuclear arms program in the 1980s was later shut down; signed the 1990 treaty for a nuclear-weapons-free zone in Latin America.

-Algeria   -Was in 1991 found to be building a reactor capable of producing weapons-grade material. Placed reactor under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards and is now a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

-South Africa  -South Africa is the only nation to have successfully developed nuclear weapons, and then voluntarily relinquished that capability. Former President F.W. de Klerk announced that South Africa had not only produced nuclear weapons, but that it had also destroyed its arsenal before July 10, 1991, when South Africa accepted the NPT.

-Ukraine  -Another former Soviet republic that has rid itself of warheads.

-Belarus -Possessed numerous nuclear weapons when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Has accepted the nuclear nonproliferation treaty and rid itself of warheads.

-Kazakstan  -Former Soviet republic supports the NPT and has given up its nuclear arms.

Good to know who has it and who doesn't!

Strange... I thought that Israel does have nuclear weapons. The early 50s stuff is true, but I'm quite sure that it's a fact that they have the weapons now (maybe not so many as you claim, though). Not like it's a danger, they will never dare to bomb a target in the relevent area (as the radiation will damage Israel itself, the whole area being so small) and I don't see a reason to use that weapon somewhere far away.

And yet in 1973 at the height of arab temporary victory (ie when they nearly retook the entire golan and were crossing into Israel), the commander of the northern front informed the defense minister he may not be able to halt the syrian army. The cabinet met and agreed to make available the nuclear weapons Israel then had.

If you don't intend to ever use them, why the hell have you got them? I suspect that faced with a choice between arab rule of Israel and nuking a neighbouring nation, your parliment would be choosing nuking the neighbouring nation. After all you appeared to in 1973........

All I can say I geuss is thank god for the intervention of your reserves stabalising the golan front before we would have found out that answer......

Nuclear weapons are a sing of human paranoia. I mean only a twisted-minded crazy lunetic would actualy use them, knowing of the power they posses...if i could chnge three things in history this. getting rid of them would be one of them...

PH, having nuclear weapons is a good thing for security. If we have them, the enemy will think twise before attacking us. It's quite obvious that we would not use the nukes even if it was the worst situation, the only nation that might have tried something like that is Japan, because it's pure kamikaze. Israel is smaller than any US state, and all the fighting is at its borders - meaning that even a small nuke will cause radiation in Israel for like 100 years.

As I said, if you weren't going to use them why did they release the ability to use them in 1973 when it appeared that israel was to fall?

Your point was the arabs would be scared and withdraw.......... not too likely if they did not know they were doing it really............... which was/is it?

Either way you seemed to be prepared to make that sacrifice, and I wouldn't be half suprised if the current loon in charge of Israel would do so if he was in that situation.

I can't answer your question because I don't know that much about Israel's secret plans, it's military and military always keeps secrets. I can provide my opionion of why this was done:
You seem to think Israel would use the bomb. Why? Because they didn't tell the world about it. Now, I don't see any reason why the enemy would think any differently. If it's a secret they must not be afraid to use it, and that must make them at least a bit afraid.

Woooa, wait a minute, the Japanese don't own any nuclear weapon, and do you know how much difficulty the government had overcome in trying to convince the people (whom they are still not convinced) before setting up their first nuclear power plant?!

As for Kamikaze, I cannot see the reason for bringing this up.  Do you know who "invented" terrorism?

I must admit that I think that, seeing as how Japan is the only nation ever to actually experience first hand the effects of a nuclear bomb, it might be going a bit far to suggest that they would be particularly irresponsible in the event that they had nuclear weapons.

Exactly!!!  Anyone who does not believe this basic truism is ignorant to the extreme about the world history of war.  Ever since the creation/use of the nuclear/atom bomb there has never been a world war (not bad considering the first two "world wars" were separated by around 25 years....since the use there hasn't been a WW in over half a century despite the nuclear proliferation) and there has never been a war with as much casualties and destruction as compared with pre-nuke wars on the whole.  Everyone now knows the stakes and thinks twice about an imperialistic mindset (save the tyrant Saddam).

Interesting article Wolfman!

The only reason I brought the kamikaze fighters into this, is to be used as somewhat of a metaphor to a country that can sacrifice its own people for honour, land or anything else. Israel is the country that's most cautious with its military forces, and civilians. Sacrifice is not something it does, as a country: and to sacrifice the country itself, that's just impossible.
