I would put it on 4. place

Castle, Rampart and Tower are stronger and the rest is weaker than fortress. In WOG it rules (Liz Wars shoot twice and have +1 ATT, Monarchs have 100 hits (70 in SOD) and +1 DEF, and Chaoties have 300 hits(250 in SOD) and +2 ATT & Speed).

BTW... when I said stronger and weaker I was refering to raw unit strenght not overall value of town.

I never hear much about..

....the Dungeon.  I like their Heroes (2 with Resurrect as specialty! and strong magic power) and they seem to have good creatures and good town specialties (+1000 exp build, artifact merchant, flagged creature build, a mana vortex for double spell points).

Does anyone have some in depth analysis on the Dungeon (i.e. I dont care about how "pretty" the dragons are or if you think its "gay" that the Dungeon is an underground town.)

I am pleading for tactical info.

Thanks

In the original release of Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Fortress was indeed proven to be the weakest town. As such, a patch was released, making some units cheaper to buy, increasing attacks and defenses and hitpoints, so that they were overall roughly equal with the other towns.

It is not easy to play Fortress, but they are on par with the other towns.

If you want to play without thinking, then Castle is good But once you get used to the game and the different types a bit more, then you should be able to handle any of them. They all have their advantages and disadvantages, and there are different tactics to use.

With the Fortress, you can get Wyvern very quickly, and Hydra very quickly, bypassing many of the earlier stacks (compared to Castle, which takes forever to get the Angel...). Also, things like Wyverns have relatively high attack (and poison) but low hps! You can also use Dragon flies for scouting, or for using a magic caster to get that important first spell in. Also, while you would be bypassing the Gorgon to get the Hydra, you may consider using them, especially if it is a map with a lot of high level creatures. Gorgons have that wonderful instant kill thing.

With the patch, their low level creatures aren't so sloppy either.

The big problem is movement. Therefore, when playing Fortress, you probably want a fast hero who scouts around with dragon flies and the like, and a battle hero who uses the slower moving stuff and actually kills.

Once you get enough numbers with your Fortress, you can beat most anyone. Safety in numbers. And your castle is pretty easy to defend.

Uhm, isnīt it the Angels who are often built in week 1 by bypassing Archers and Champions ?

You *can* get Angels in one week, but the price is quite a lot more. It takes 7 days to get Angels, yet 4 for Hydra. And it is much cheaper to get Hydras.

Unless you are playing on Easy, it is very difficult to get Angels in the first week. Even on Easy, you have to make some sacrifices to do it.

I donīt play any games other than 160% and 200%, but as far as I know, Angels week 1 on 130% and below is pretty standard. What Iīm saying is that Angels are, like Hydras, one of the few level 7 creatures that can be built early by bypassing a few other dwellings, and therefore a bad example.

It can depend on what resources are lying about.

Angels, if I remember correctly, require 25 gems plus 15,000 plus 6 other dwellings. Total cost was something in the order of 25,000 gold pieces. Sorry, but I can't be bothered re-calculating it right now.

Now, while this is theoretically possible to do on Hard, it is really never going to happen on Impossible within the 7 day limit. Except of course for maps with loads of money lying about on early turns, and not protected well. But, even with this, you still need to get 25 gems, which isn't easy without a market place.

Hydras of course are much less mineral dependent, and can in theory be bought on day 4, thus allowing you 1 day for a Citadel, 1 day for a Castle, and even 1 day for a market place in case you are having trouble getting the minerals. It is very much possible to get Hydras on week 1 on impossible.

Depending on the map, Behemoths are either the easiest or 2nd easiest to get out. They are cheaper than Hydras and less mineral dependent, but have 4 prerequisite buildings rather than 3 (thus needing you to buy them on day 5 at earliest). If it is hard to get lots of resources, then Behemoths are what you can get in week 1, ahead of Hydras.

Angels have less steps to get than, say, Bone Dragons, but in terms of cost are quite high. It is really only viable to get them on week 1 on a lower difficulty rating, or on maps which have lots of money lying about.

Certainly, Hydras will be easier to get out than Angels. Unless of course for some reason it is a map which has lots of money, lots of gems, but bans a market place to swap stuff around.

Hydras vs Behemoths are close to the first one to get. Angels are not.

u could at least try to guess something close
If I remember correctly angels building costs 10 GMSC and 20000 gold, which on a random map normally aint possible week one on most randoms, even on 130% (Hey Lews, maybe it's time to leave the holy battleground of toh maps

U must be kidding me? Behemoths needs wolf and roc structure. thats it. So behemoths is often possible to build day2

I have played ToH maps and CD-maps in season I. In seasons II-IV 100% of the maps that I played were randoms.

Also, I do think that Portal of Glory week 1 is possible on most randoms at 130% difficulty, because in one of the rare 130% games that I played, my opponent built Devils week 1. And this is certainly more difficult than Angels week 1.

But as I also said before, I may be wrong about this, because I played only very few games below 160% and 200%.

I find problems getting enuff money for the angels build, 20000 is a lot on 130% normal random

Althou, its all very dependant, and also, I'm not even close to being near the best players, which I believe clear the maps far quicker than me

It all is about how fast you smash into the "Banks".
If you can get them out by day2 you got a good lead.
I think that by smashing the "Banks", you have better chances of getting a PoG or any other lvl7...well the one that can be gotten anyway....but on med. randoms I could careless about lvl7 by the time they get to build them, you wait for the build...them smash then the next day...then you got their lvl7...,but on large maps the are needed fast and some times on med..but not often,,,,

Fortress rules! It has the best heroes! (Bron, Tazar, Styg) It has a good grail, who prevents your siege defending battels frome being a Stalingrad! It can build upp it's creatures extremely fast, and it has an enormus mid game-power. It is simply the best town! (Conflux come near) I ofte choose Tazar in the beginig so I can scout safly, when I then chooises Styg to assist me whith her witchcraft! The only bad thing whit Fortress is it's limited fire magic (and all other magic). But it is still the best town of them all!

I think the barbarians are the weakest town, having little or no magic.
I think the Fortress is good because the creatures are cheap and you can build the Wyverns early in the game giving you a huge advantage.
