LIFE - Haven strategies

Hi everyone,

Like most of all, I am great ORDER fan.
But, I think that LIFE alignment is greatly neglected in our posts so far. I find it a bit challenging to fight with haven in multi. Is there anyone picking life in multi? There is no angelic clan also...Is the LIFE alignment that weak??

I would appreciate any advice concerning life strategies both on adventure and combat map... In choosing the right heroes, also.
IMHO, stables are MUST on the Day 1. Next, picking order mage (MASS SLOW) would be fine...

Well, I'll let more experienced players talk...

Thanx.

Life alignment ( Haven Castle)

Life alignment is probably my favorite of all to play because of it's close alliance with Order and Nature. This allows for the most diverse group of heroes  in my opinion.

combat from archers.. nature magic from druids... life magic and tactics from the native priest and knight heroes...nobility from lords and order magic from the wizards.  lots of mixing and matching available.  good spells with combat and tactics still available.

A neat thing to do would be to make a crusader and a wizard king which can be done easily in a life or order town. In life, hire a knight and lord and teach them life magic and order magic respectively. This will result in you getting the first turn in nearly every combat while your wizard king will shoot enemies and give them bad luck.

I think it is a good side to play on Marathea's Island in particular. While playing with life, I can accumulate in 7 days:

10 ballistae
30 squires
30 archers
10 stack of a random lvl. 2 creature

I win every time against the AI this way.

Yes, ballista growth is very high + no ranged penalty + mechanical - makes them better choice over pikemen.
For 3. level, I would prefer crusaders however. 2 attacks will crush citadel/castle gate much earlier.
In rich maps one should try to build angels as soon as possible, because of movement increase (35).

As for spells, my favourite is martyr. As someone mentioned before, protecting your crusaders with martyr on heroes or poor squires is really effective.

Still, which heroes to choose? My first hero would always be priest. It is good idea to make crusader/wizard king. Bying order mage would be good choice also...

I think I said that.  The squires are really good for taking out those barbarians when you have a bunch of them.  Just make sure you have Regeneration on your hero, or a lot of potions of Imortality.

I played Haven ounce randomly and the damn game didn't give me Bind Wound (Lvl 1), Heal (Lvl 2) and not even Regeneration or Mass Heal (Lvl 3's).  Needles to say it was hard to get started on that one.

My choices for Haven are usually as follows,

Level 2:  I usually go for the Pikemen

Level 3:  I usually go for the Monks

Level 4:  Angels all the way.

My choices are ballista, crusader and champion (simple haste makes his charge bonus incredibly powerfull). Ballista is excellent shooter (maybe best second level unit) and crusader is really hardcore fighter. Strength of life is in very strong units along with buffy spells which makes them even better.

But life is boring...

Life build orders (based on my gameplay):
1. Fort - Day 1
2. Archery Range - train archers - Day 2
3. Squire's Guild - train squires - Day 3
4. Guard Tower - train pikemen - Day 4
5. Order of Paladins - Day 5
6. Barracks - train crusaders - Day 6
7. Town Hall - Day 7
8. City Hall - Day 8
9. Stables - Day 9
10. etc...

Honestly I'm not really good at multiplayer, my friends usually like to build up simple armies and so do I, we don't really care about fast map exploring cause we want to build our armies to the max and then have a huge clash.

But against the computer I do more than fine, and I did the Life campaign with heroes only(an army of 6 lvl30 heroes is pretty formidable, but that's only campaign).

If you look for the standard two hero setup and it's a large map I recommend Cardinal and Crusader, with crusader keeping combat archery and melee just a level below so he won't change class. I tend to use a full melee army with life(except for the crossbowman) so a double shooting crusader who can kill from afar, and save the magic hero in close quarters come in handy.
Cardinals are good cause with resurrection they can really keep your army in a good shape, especially if you prefer Pikamen like me. Learn a third magic school and if the final battle is about to take place you can always become an Archmage with a spare Tree of Knowledge and the Seminary in no time(if I remember well you only need like 3-5 skills from the third magic class). Consedire Order and Nature magic since they're the ones that available for Life, and even though nature will give you many useless spells like Summon, it can make you a lot faster both in battle and on the advanture map, and also have two defensive spells if you're really desparate.
I find both Pikamen and Crusaders to be excellent units, especially at siege combat. As someone mentioned Crusaders can break down the gates pretty quickly and Pikamen can simply pierce trough walls.
Ballista is awesome as a defender though, but I wouldn't chose Monks cause when the enemy is in, the only thing that will save you are Angels, so you need Crusaders to keep them out.
When you chose your 4th lvl creature you have to look at your resources and your enemy. The resources part is obvious, and if you have a slow enemy then buy Champions, for a fast enemy you have to go with Angels. There are many factors to this and a Scouting helps determinig what should you take based on enemy main hero's skills. Usually Angels are always a good choice, I just like to use Champions too cause they're cheaper and there are more of them, honestly I find them a more interesting unit.

Always give speed upgrades to your Magic hero cause with life magic as their main he/she could buff troops at the earliest time possible(obviously start with mass bless, then mass shield, and later song of peace can help greatly against massive melee creatures). You should get some good bow for your Might hero and as usually place him right before the magician so he'll be hit first from where you can cast Regeneration/Heavenly Shield/Martyr/Heal to support whichever hero you wish(Might hero usually knows HS by this time also).
If you can, do the first attacks with your crossbowmen/pikamen then maybe Squires with first strike, Crusaders can just cleave trough anything afterwards. For Champion you should use haste as someone already explained. Archangles are easy to use, just be sure to use ressurection in the right time.

About build order. You just simply focus on getting your lvl 3 creature and after that you'll see. Stable and Seminary is always a nice addition though.

Well I may have wrote down some obvious things, and maybe these things doesn't even work well in serious multiplayer, but I hope it helped to some people.

Talking about multiplayer - only one REAL challenge:
ALWAYS - angels+crusaders; to kill enemy heroes fast and to ressurect own.
It is good to have order heroes to get powerfull spells; second way is preserve which 5 lvl summon spells are great too, but IMHO order's steall all and hypnoze rules.
And obvious rule in multiplayer game: priest, tactic and a guy with pathfinding are essential.
