the AI of heroes IV

Everybody knows the AI is not so good. Here's another proof:
I played Zanfas Challenge, and finally conquered the last castle on the main land. "Keep your towns 3 turns and you are the winner."
Unfortunately, on Zanfas island, I had left the one town I had conquered there, unprotected. A green hero would be there in three turns. He ran straight toward it.
Of course he does, I thought. Shame. No victory yet. But?
The green hero suddenly had something better to do, the last turn. He was close, but that empty town scared him too much, to take a free town and stop my victory.
And it was a strong green hero, lots of creatures.

Here is another bug:

When you set your high level order mages loose on autocombat and they cast hypnotize on an enemy stack, for some reason they do it again the next round, and cancel out the initial hypnotize. This is annoying when you have two high level order mages, because they both cast hypnotize on an enemy stack, thus cancelling the spells out. The correct thing to do is to wait until the first hypnotize runs out, and then cast it again.

Annoying I say... good reason not to use autocombat when your mages are by themselves.

Heh....

I hardly ever use Autocombat - spell points are too precious, I certainly wouldn't allow stupid AI to waste them, especially on expensive 5 level spells.

splat, your example actually demonstrates that the AI is very good. as in good vs. evil. it did a nice and unselfish thing just to make you happy. few humans could ever manage that...

I would have been much happier if he had seized that town from me. Strange, isn't it.

I think we all have to accept the fact that game AI is always going to blow.  Someone referred to Big Blue beating the world's greatest chess player, the first time ever this happened.

Remember, chess AI has been developed for probably a couple of decades now(or maybe longer) and not just for a year or less when talking about new game releases.  When Big Blue beat Kasparov, it wasn't all about CPU power, it was about a chess algorithm developed over a very long time.  If someone put the same work into HOMM4 AI, it would be much better than it is obviously.

Another thing, the rules of chess don't change, the value of the pieces don't change and you aren't adding new pieces to the game when an expansion is released.  All these changes that happen in PC games don't help in making AND keeping an AI good.  Just little changes in the game can make a good AI bad again.

It will be a long time from now when you see a real challenging AI released with a new turn-based strategy game like HOMM.

If someone put ANY work into HOMM4 AI, it would be much better than it is. Unfortunatelly, AI was obviously left out completely.

Rules of chess don't change, but the value of pieces changes dramatically, often with each turn! Also, unlike in Heroes, there are just so many possible combinations that even evaluating a given position is difficult.

HoMM4's AI isn't strong and HoMM3 is harder than HoMM4, but alpha version. I think JVC developed human player purpose. HoMM4 fits for multiplayer. We can't know, because 3DO was in a hurry for mass production, when 3DO needed money. If beta version gives us a good AI. It means much harder than HoMM3. How? HoMM4 AI can walk event pass, if event gives trap to opponent. AI doesn't step into a trap again before AI gets strong armies. Another you can meet good AI in the Winds of War (campaign), but good mapmaker affects the matter also over 40 lvl heroes you can make. Remember AI is passive, if AI can't see whichever is neutral or player town, for example. It will brake AI's freedom of movement. So give Scoutings to AI. Such etc This old thread you understand now, because you're experience. We wait for you publish good map. Many mapmaker never gave bonuses to AI.

AI is completly lost if we talk about map. Battle AI is very good but with bugs eg. cant use potions. H4 is most complicated than H3. H1-2 have the best AI. I have a big problem on max lvl. In single AI is most important. So H4 is wasted primary and first because AI rest is minor thing.

It's a petty no one ever rewrote H4 AI's, I fell like it's the best Heroes concept ever but that's completely missing.
OTOH, they were probably too ambitious for that to ever have an happy ending. How the hell can someone code an AI where one player can have an army composed only of creatures while some neutrals may have a General with good spells and carrying the best artifacts leading them but AI players still have conditions to progress?
From my experience Advanced difficulty is the one where you may find better AI opponents, above that you will instead find their corps near some powerful neutral army.

On high difficultly lv AI often is dead beacuse cant win neutrals and lose battle :0))) Its iritaiting. AI dont attack. Is sleepy. Walking aroud his own city. Horrible. AI in H1-2 is like thunder. Alwas attack you from all sides! You cant leave your city for a whike because you lost! I like it. HIV is good concept but tragical realistation. Yes best solution is to rewrote all game from A to Z. Maybe in future?

In my maps I usually give AI resource and/or monster bonuses so it can win against neutrals. AI is also notoriously shy so it needs a bit of an advantage to attack.

With resource bonus, AI can be quite a challange. My resource bonus includes all types of resources because HOMM IV AI also sucks in capturing mines and treasures :V (and will even often ignore objects in map even if they are rlics...)
