Poll Question:
Which map type do you prefer?

I thought i would post this poll to get TOH players opions on which map type they like.  I myself prefer random maps with 2 comp players, i have found them much more enjoyable.

i havea feeling it will an even split between closed and open maps, with random 3rd.  Lets just wait and see. I appreciate some feedback on this issue.

thanks,

Ironmlh

Oops minor adjustment in POLL

the last two answers regarding Random maps was meant to be:

  4) Random maps with 2 comp players
  5) Random maps with more than 2 comp players.

Sorry about that.

Well that certainly shows u the sign of the times... open maps not being voted for ... closed maps are in i guess but unfortunatly random maps are in too what crap Random maps need to be generated better ... but since its random i guess u cant control that many variables

I agree with FC_SP, playing 2 hours with no interaction with your opponent or a comp player is not my idea of fun.

Masterbat**n

It is refreshing to see the comments on here about no human contact on a map. To me a closed map is like someone saying, on a basketball court "Want some of this?" and then running to the opposite end and trying to shoot faster than I am on this end. If you want some come get some. Lets be in each other's face and see who is better. That's what makes online play so great aye?

I'm not downing on closed maps. I have played hourglass online like 6 times and it's not too bad. After all the middle on most of these maps is guarded by 12-16 level 7's which can be taken out in wk 2 or 3. A close map offers a buffer period for new players to kind of get their sh*t together before it all comes down on them and if during that time they go to a dragon utopia and get Armageddon's Blade or Angelic Alliance it may even allow them to win a game they could have never won on skill alone so in a sense they are a good equalizer.

The bad thig about closed maps is when the designer rewards the first to the middle with a little too much bounty. If one guy has Inferno and the other Dungeon we know one has Devils and Castle week1 but Dragons not til week 2 in many cases. So it will be hard for the dungeon player to make it to the center as fast. On a map like Hourglass you don't have too much to gain in the middle and getting there first does not offer a HUGE advantage although one can be attained there. But on a map like CrissCross4 the first one to the middle can just clean it out and learn all the 4th level spells and stat increases gaining a huge advantage. Maps should have more strategic options then just racing to middle or build for a month and then fight.

I personally like open maps as I do not like playing with myself(OK maybe a lil but let's not tlak about it OK?). Maybe someone should make a new closed map called '2 Hours of Masterbat**n' or '2 Guys Playin with Themselves'. Just kidding :-), to each their own.

Hey I like Closed maps!!!

Sheesh... no one here seems to like maps that aren't possible to kill ur opponent in the first week. I mean it is very easy to get solymor and go kill kill ur opponent in the first week. Thats why I dislike open maps, it is too easy just to go straight for ur opponent. I personally like having a big nasty garrision or 7th lvl creature in between us. So that i can build up for a real fight between 2 heroes with some power. Not a whole bunch of little fights that take forever because neither of us having anything but first and second lvl creatures. I do like one thing about open maps and that is getting to watch my opponent do his turn. I find this holds my interest more than just sitting and waiting for him to end hir turn, with no idea what is taking so long. But this is also great thing about closed maps, if u do make a mistake ur opponent has no idea, so u can recover from it. After all the mark of a truely great player is one who can recover after making a costly error. As for random maps, I played them alot and prolly 90% of them suxed, cause it was always a landside victory for one side. Rarely were the games even close, that is why dislike them so much.

random map all the way.

I prefer random maps, because they generally require skill where as most pre-generated maps you can just play a couple times and develope a good strategy (or copy someone elses good strategy) and then play with very little thought at all.

You may need to check if some of the random artifacts are
worth getting, or something minor like that but in general
you can just follow your pre-game strategy and at least be competitive.  I think this type of game takes very little skill, sure there is still the skill in battle but that is only one part of the skill require to really be what I would consider a skillful player.  This in general does lead to close games (maybe part of the reason why Jex says 90% of his random map games have been blowouts) but rather boring game since the general strategies never change.

You could always play the pre-made maps without knowing them first but this usually doesn't work either. If you are able to find someone else willing to play these maps without first developing a strategy for them (which is very difficult to say the least) then you might have a good game, but in general you will end up playing someone who does have such a strategy and then it is a blow-out.

For these reasons I prefer random maps, where all the aspects of being skilled in the game come into play (at least potentially).  I will agree that many random maps are unbalanced, but that is also a flip of the coin, and a very skilled player should probably enjoy the challenge of such a game.

Hey I like closed maps too. I think you have to work out in your territory a bit, and then hunt the opponent, this is more fun, at least for me. Battlemania is great...
Random maps are good, you see player skills in random.

Greiger, you hit the nail on the head with your explanation of randmom VS closed or open maps.   I will look for you next time im looking for a random map opponent.

Random maps. The main reasoning is that it is no challenge to beat 21 familiars for your merc mine on some ToH maps, and you cant tell me that ToH maps arent luck orientated, "oops, I got 2 bags of gold and head of legion from my utopia, and my opponent got THE shield, THE sword, and THE helm from his". All random maps need to make them viable to play are a couple of basic rules to guard against getting unlucky. And if your opponent doesnt believe that your sawmill is guarded by "lots of cyclops kings", tell him to look at the thing.

Well, having luck in multiplayer games is great, but not all times in random maps you win just because you had luck. Random maps are great just because no player knows how it is going to be, and no one knows what's behind the door, soo KNOCK KNOCK.....surprise....

I don't understand all you players who keep constantly dissing on random maps saying that it is all luck. Most TOH maps are almost just as much luck as any random. When both players played the same map 50 million times the ONLY thing that decides the game is what arts/skills/spells you get, not the players true skill. Playing all these maps that people love so much like HG, DW, BM is sure fun when you can blow away some player cause they just don't know the strategy, but then you start playing someone who also knows the map by heart and more luck comes into play then any random map can possibly have. Sure IF you get exp earth from the box on DW you can have that middle town by Week 1 Day 7 or if you get a level 7 in a camp on HG you can have the middle by day 5, or find one tome of magic on any map and you can summon elementals till they die. These aren't master strategies these are all just lucky breaks that the game can give you, there is no true skill in this. And what's up with all these maps that just super bulk up one hero and if you lose your main you just might as well surrender, what fun is it in having only one option and if  it fails, giving up. I can respect that people just don't like to play on random maps, but people who say that random maps are just all luck obviously haven't really played them and if they have they just got whopped cause they didn't have their whole strategy memorized to every move for 2 weeks. How many games have you had that were decided solely by a utopia or some stupid relic? How many times is that major art right outside your castle the boots of speed and you can clear twice as fast as your opponent? Random maps are almost never decided by one battle, almost never decided by one relic and you always have the option of changing or having multiple main heroes. There are complex strategies you run into that you can never see on a toh map and no game is ever the same and is never boring. It is always fun to play a toh map once in a while, but please don't say that random is all luck cause it is not, it probably has even less luck than the made maps.

dont be surprised

There are only 109 members on this forum who can post messages , so obviously some people(like myself) have been looking at the thread more than once.

Anyway why i think that most people think random maps are based on luck is because luck seems to come into play in the developing stages of the game. You get no luck, you are still stuck in your area during week 2 with mines and goodies guarded by level 4 and 5 creatures. This happens to me a bit too often hence the intense aversion to random maps.

On the other hand  with other maps, luck does not seem to be much of a factor when we develop our castles, so those of us who enjoy trooping around with dragons or angels would obviously enjoy premade maps and would probably feel uncomfortable with random maps.

And by the way whats a blubbo?
