I think weather would be cool as long as it's balanced

It could be optional and should have no effect then it would be good.
And in this form(as an optional graphic tool)I would accept it

Like the night, I think that weather should only be an animation component of some enviorments, like snowfall at the northern land, sand storms at the desert, falling leaves at a forest, strong winds at platos, thunder storms at evil places, ect.
If you make the weather effect battles you throw the game out of balance again.

Yeah the weather would unbalance the game in my opinion, no weather is better.

another tough call...

whether or not to include weather...or not?
In my humble opinion, it depends on to which direction the HMM series is heading:
> if it is shifting it focus to more complex and macro managing of exploration and combats, then weather might stand a chance
> if it is aiming to be more universally tactical and allow more casual way of playing, then it might not be a new element to be welcomed
the reasons behind this thinking is simple: to bring whatever new element to this well-developed,long-lived game would mean to"
- break a good number of valid rules and reestablish them, and ultimately rebalance them (internally and externally: with other seemingly less affected elements)
- setup an entirety of game system including UI, control, help system and reward-punishment mechanism
- reprioritize the key game play factors so the newcomer don't steal all the thunders...

PS: hi, I am new here, I am glad I have made it into this highly passionate and friendly neibourhood (finally), cheers!

I think weather would be good, but only in combat through spells/abilities/scripting.

I mean like animated weather effects on the Adventure Map and Combat Map.

Weather like

Rain,
Snow,
Winds
Storms With occasional flashes of Lighting across the map etc.

I know that mean more animation and probaly more resources from the computer system but i was just wondering.

Baldur's Gate 2 have some weather animation in the game and it was very nice and gave the game a sense of realism.

Anyone else think that too?

i think "clouds" of weather that moves over the map would be nice
i beleive wholeheartedly that wheather could become a serious element.
in fact it could paired with other things make heroes a game where you must be flexible.
rain: fire spell 1/2 dmg inferno has low morale
wind: accuracy of projectiles reduced
storm: double damage to lightning spells
Overcast(extremely):necropolis creatures get boosts light spells 1/2 spell power
snow:lowered speed
hurricane:every once in a while blows units around and damages em.
tornado:lol do i need to say it
sandstorm:no range attacks.
calm:nothing (Booring)

I am game designer if that is what you care to know...
Let's focus back on the topic of this thread: weather.

weathers are nice to have even if merely for eye candies.
and it is not too hard to imagine cool possibilities of linking weather with game parameters. but the situation is:
for example (maybe not a good one) when you have a solid game like US 9ball, by adding a flashy new rule,(inspired my it be)does it necessarily make the game more fun?
{like if whenever you hit the cue, you have to hit the correct numbered ball(obviously) BUT NEVER THE NUMBER+1 BALL.}
it's extra stuff yes, it's new yes. but does it contribute more fun to the game or is it a big enough distraction to soften the integrity of the original structure?

same goes for many new elements that could potentially be added to HOMM: full moon/half moon, learning astrology, day/night, migration of beasts, resource tide with seasons...etc.

I'd love to know what's your take on this before evening digging into what weather can do.

As long as it is well integrated.  The problem with some games is that they thrust new concepts on top of the game and they don't mix them in with existing ones.  Eg, having weather just being there is terrible, but having it combined with factions (eg, Necro leads to fog, Naga leads to rain) and then having it subtly decrease stats would work.

I think it's great Idea. In my opinion- even better, would be this if you could see in heroe's view the sky and the clouds...
About whether affecting- if there was a strom- Titans and S. Titans, should gain +1 init for example, when it is sunny and hot- Fire Elementals and Phoenixes should get 1 to dmg and att and so on...
Also, in cold whether- nude or only light stuff wering dudes should get init penalty, and in hot whether- that with thich clothes should get init penalty...
