Does a higher starting difficulty make the game easier?

Maybe its just me, but setting the difficulty to higher levels actually becomes counter-productive at the high levels when playing a single scenario.
The highest difficulty settings make wandering monsters bigger, and reduce your starting gold, but don't help the computer opponents any.
What this has seemed to mean to me is:
You get bored because you have to sit around waiting for enough money to fight the wandering monsters.
Rather than getting bored, the computer goes ahead and tries to fight them...and dies.  A lot.  You see lots of little grave markers of computer players.
When you actually get a big enough army to fight the wandering monsters, the poor computer has been sending army after army to certain doom.  You crush what they have left like dry cereal.
If by chance they manage to send an army anywhere near you, their caution level is so high you can dissuade them with just a few troops.

What does anyone else think?

Never noticed this problem. That could be caused by the fact I don't wait for my army to grow, instead I try to beat my way through ASAP. Usually I reach the enemy before he's dared to leave his town, only once in the twelve campaigns he managed to lose his army before I reached him.

I agree.  The only thing starting at a higher level does is makeing you wait to do anything.  Comps just as stupid.

WOW! I'm somehwat glad you revealed this information.
It's to bad 3d0 didn't input an AI algoritham like:
Percentage of the enemy stack, percentage of AI army. Dose it weigh out? Yes-fight No-do not fight.
(Although, it wouldn'tve been that simple. It would have to corelate with AIs movement plans, ect.. i think)

You have given me a reason to think playing on a high difficulty, is cheating in a way =(
