I was originally planning to make a thread about what I'm now about to write, but figured it was as well to just post it here...
Well, here I go:
Yesterday (or today; it was past midnight), me and two of my friends were watching 'Alternative Nation' on MTV Nordic, or Europe, or whatever they call themselves this week.
Understand me right. I do not usually watch MTV, but when I passed my buddy's room on my way to the bathroom, I heard R.E.M. And I thought: "How marvelous! Real music at MTV!" and went in to sit and watch the show. And here comes the 'funny' part.
Here is a list of what music MTV considers 'alternative':
REM - Imitation of life
Oasis - Wonderwall
Blur - Song2
Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit
Ash - Envy
Radiohead - Creep
Red Hot Chili Pepppers - Around the World
Coldplay - In my place
Röyksopp - Remind me
Zwan - Honestly
I mean, ALTERNATIVE?
Each and every one of these bands has a larger fan base than any of the usual MTV artists (50cents, Britney, Linkin Park, etc.)!
Have MTV started hiring 14years old 'music pickers'?
Six of these bands are among what I call the BIG ONES of the 90s. (REM, Oasis, Blur, Nirvana, Radiohead, Red Hot.)
So I ask: What is the matter with MTV?

I was listening to an alternative station and they were in this total morass of shoegazer and emo crapola. Then I heard this awesome song that I knew was by Mark Lanegan. Awesome I was thinking, Lanegan is back in the game!
nope
it was a Screaming Trees song from 1991.
Man I miss grunge. Everytime I turn on the radio.
