Best upgrade in the game
There are many great upgrades in the game,here are some of my favourites:
Giant......Titan
Wood Elf...Grand Elf
Vampire....Vampire Lord
...and others.

vamp to VLord is the best in my eyes, regular fourth to enteral life... but giant to titan is by far the heaviest upgrade

Best upgrades...
Red dragon-Black Dragon=They look different
Hel Hound-Cerberus=they also look different
Bone dragon-Ghost Dragon=THey also look totally different
Green Dragon-Gold Dragon=Same story
Roc-THunderbird=Two different creatures.

Isnīt it better to keep the pixies unupgraded. Otherwise they canīt use up a retaliation in a suicideattack (which is the only thing they are good for).

That's a good point about pixies and sprites,although they can be used as a sprite(with no reatliaton), but in the early moments of the game.
Although Giant-Titan upgrade is probably the best, it is the expensiest, too.So in medium, small and some large maps they are unreachable.In that case I would go for the Grand Elves and Vampire Lords.

For Galahad
I find sprites early in game are very handy, due to their unanswered strike and fast speed(9 I think). There have been games where I have killed 30 gold golems in the first few days with them.

...you best upgrade these whenever there is a chance of doing so - note that +2 speed is a great boost (and no retal - besides why get them killed; you better make your enemy waste a turn - or better yet - wait, then strike - 9 speed (10 on grass) is hardly beatable - parking them just besides an enemy shooter is mot a bad option either - so why not strike instead of only block them?!

...the giant to titan upgrade is definately the most substantial, but the coolest and best upgrade has got to be that from a wood elf to a sharpshooter...but why aren't the elves better sharpshooters than the archer upgrade units???

Even if you upgrade them you can still buy single pixies for taking that first hit retaliation, but sprites are very strong. In the easily gotten large numbers they can be devastating with no retaliation, you can dance around the battlefield and take out many slower walking units with 0 losses.

Upgrades
Pixies to Sprites are one of the best upgrades, almost like prepatch gremlins to MG's. You can almost always get hordes of sprites, and in the early game they are awesome against everything except shooters, but I still put 3 singles of them in my army to block shooters, but actually cross battlefield with more durable units.
Vampire to V-Lord is probably the very best upgrade of all. From only fighting a few battle dwarves to taking out whole treasuries and medusa stores, I prefer to have 8 v-lords take meduse stores then most other unupgraded 7's that you would have that early. Just awesome, and woe betide the enemy who is faced with a single stak of v-lords over 80. It's extremely hard to kill them the more #'s they get.
I'll include Gorgon and Pit Fiends upgrades also, I don't hear many people talk about Pit Lords resurrect ability, I think people don't use it alot, that ability combined with Arch Devils and overall speed of Inferno is why it is my favorite town.
Possibly Giant to Titans, but that is usually a late game upgrade. The other upgrade which is very good is serpent flies to dragon flies- totally useful in fortress town. Best upgrade for them besides hydra.

Although Inferno isn't my favourite, they have pretty nice skill over there.But that still doesn't make the Pit Lords much better for level 5 (!!!)'cause the demons are not really useful.(at least for me)

Allright, I was probably wrong about Sprites. Never play with Conflux so Iīm no expert.
Inferno on the other hand is one of my favourite towns and I love Pit lords. With diplomacy you can get a lot of potential demons.

Pegasi
Early in the game I like the upgrade Pegasis to Silevr Pegasi most. Because if you have a stack of shooting creatures (mostly the elves when playing Rampart) and you position the Silver Pegasi the right way you can kill almost any creature blocking a mine (or something else) within 1 or 2 turns, because of the huge movement-ratio the Silver Pegasi have.
Later in the game: Yes, Titans!

Best upgrades:
Level 1: Master Gremlin (it's a shooter)
Level 2: Harpy Hag (no retal, plus return to old space)
Level 3: Cerberus (3 way attack, no retal)
Level 4: Ogre Mage (+50% hp and casts bloodlust)
Level 5: Mighty Gorgon (it alone makes Fortress playable)
Level 6: Cycolps King (much better for sieges)
Level 7: Phoenix (can you say resurrection)

best upgrades:
lvl 1: master gremlin (shoots(become not entirely useless)
lvl 2: wolf raider/harpy hag (really fast, 2 attacks/ hit and run attack w/ no retaliation)
lvl 3: WRAITHS/Royal griffins (steals mana, regeneration/always retaliate)
lvl 4: VAMPIRE LORD (no retaliation, replenish health equal to amount of damage)
lvl 5: master genie/thunderbird/mighty gorgon (do 150% dmg to efreet, cast random beneficial spell/20% lighting bolt attack/death stare)
lvl 6: DREAD KNIGHT (20% chance of curse, 20% chance double dmg, do nearly the same amount of dmg as lvl 7 creature, and take nearly the same amount of dmg as lvl 7 creature)
lvl 7: Titan (mind spell immunity, 150% dmg to black dragons, shoot, can take most dmg, can do most dmg of any other lvl 7 creature)

I kind of ... REALLY think wolf riders/raiders are totally useless in middle and end of a game. once I had 300 of them and in 2 battles they were totally wasted, while if I was playing another castle, 300 1st level units would have been way better because u get them faster and they are less expensive... they r the only reason I dont play stronghold very often..

The thing is, you have to watch them really carefuly. If you defend with them you will lose almost all of them(they are attracted by others LoL), so you will have to attack with them, better if the creature retalieted. You will have to plan the battle all before.
