everyone has forgotten a very very useful upgrade... it upgrades a creature from being nearly useless to ultra useful... it's the....
Genie to Master Genie!!!... who doesn't want those spells? ... especially on magic plains...
(how come the genie gets a sex change???)

I think that Giants -> Titans is the best upgrade overall. (i.e. if you take a non-upgraded stack that is juuust big enogh to beat the giants, the upgraded stack of the same size will most likely lose to the same number of titans)

If you consider the price, then Lich -> Power Lich is the best upgrade. It costs almost nothing, but it gives extra health, extra damage, extra stats, extra speed... come to think of it, I don't think there is anything it doesn't improve

I would also go for Vampires - Vampirlords....close to Giants - Titans. The upgrade is pretty cheap, be it the unit upgrade itself or the dwelling (in opposit to Giant - Titans), and i can't think of any unit more helpfull and powerfull on that early stage of the game. Day 8, u will have 12 vamplords. You kill 80% of the map with those 12 fooooos...and get stronger with every fight coz of those skellies u earn.

Now, the usefulness of an upgrade will be how big impact it has on your game, and for this reason I would say the following:

Vampire Lords
Crusaders
Grand Elves
Cerberus
Marksmen

All of these upgrades add a lot to the units. Doubling, and in some cases with the Cerberus, tripling damage output. The vampire lords alos become a force to be reckoned with once upgraded. Also, Marksmen and Vampire Lords go from being worst creature at their level to being among the most useful of their levels.

Titans are all nice and all that, but you won't see them as often as the other units I've mentioned.

As for the imps, the upgrade is only 1000. On the other hand, the added 2 defence skill makes them harder to kill, making demon farming harder as well.

Worst upgrade is probably Gnoll Marauders. 10 wood for a level 1 unit? No thanks! Sad really, as I really like gnoll marauders.

here are a few upgrades that might have been overlooked a bit. these aren't the best but they are still pretty good i think

cyclopes upgrade is pretty good for attacking castle walls

roc upgrade to thunderbird .. a lot better speed and lightning strike special

water ele. to ice ele. (obviously)

That's wrong. A hell hound deals 2-7 points of damage while a cerberus only deals 2-5. That's a loss of 1 point or 22%. The attack stays at 10.
Furthermore it's very unlikely that your opponent will allow you to hit 3 (or even 2) creatures at once.
The best aspect of the upgrade is certainly the no retal IMO.

My vote goes to vampire -> vampire lord.
