The only thing good to be said about solmyr is that he starts with Chain Lightning. The speciality isn't worth that much and any hero can get sorcery.

Think about it Russ.
Just because you start with Ballista, it dont mean your the most efficient.
Anyone can have a ballista to start with & even the specialty.
Archery though increases in the damage recieved by the %.
Orrin being on a high level if he is able to get the artillary skill with his archery skill can create big damage.

Ok, since you are talking it seriously, I'll reply to it.
1) IMHO ballista heroes are only good because they have easy start on poor maps and can do many fights on week 1 that are impossible otherwise. Gurnisson is the best because with his 4 attack and artillery skill his ballista will deal the most damage. Unlike Orrin he does not get garbage skills, so later on he'll still be a good main because only 1 skill slot (artillery) will be *sort of* wasted.
2) Orrin DOES NOT start with artillery. So, basically, you'll have a hero from the crappiest might hero class who may not even get artillery skill. So, at level 20 his ballista will only deal 2x damage. Gurnisson can deal 4x damage as early as level 3. Even if Orrin does get artillery, by the time it is at the expert level, ballista will stop being very useful.

I agree. The Ballista becomes less useful (especially against non-wandering stacks) as time goes. Before Orrin's level reaches a level where his archery speciality has a notable effect ballistas have become useless.
What I think Xarfax meant is this: Assmuing Orrin and some other hero with ballista speciality have expert archery and the same attack skill Orrin will deal more damage because of his archery bonus.

- Orrin level 10, Expert Archery = Balista makes 75% more damage than normal
- Gurnisson Level 10, Expert Artillery = Balista does 120% more damage (Gurni starts with +2 attack, +2 attack skill for the balista till level 10 assumed)
Not counted the higher attack skill of Gurni.
- Orrin level 10, Expert Archery, Expert Artillery = 175% more damage
- Gurni Level 10, Expert Artillery = 120% more damage.
55% missing....Would be 11 more attack to equal that.
That possible for Gurni till Level 10?
- Orrin level 10, Expert Archery, Expert Artillery = 175% more damage
- Gurni Level 10, Expert Artillery, Expert Archery = 170% more damage
Only 1 more attack for Gurni to equal Orrin´s damage.
So if Orrin gets artillery (not unlikely for knights) and Gurni doesn´t take archery (rarely taken with stronghold...), i think Xarfax´s statement isn´t that far away from the truth...
But perhaps my numbers are wrong also...

They are  Expert artillery doubles the ballista damage AND makes it shoot twice for the grand total of 4x damage. Everybody already knows that ballista special isn't anywhere near good, so you can just ignore it in your calculations.
But anyways, I think you've missed what I said about ballista heroes in my post above.
It is just like Tower - if you look at the math only, Tower has the strongest lineup, yet very few people consider Tower the strongest town.

But if both have expert artillery, it doesn´t matter if they shoot 2 times or 24 times i guess. So only the first example is wrong...even more advantage for Gurni then....
But what about the others?
Perhaps we are drifting away from Xarfax´s original post then....

Well, from dictionary, potent = powerful. When I see "the most potent ballista hero", so I understand it as "the most powerful ballista hero", not "a hero who has a potential of dealing the highest damage with the ballista", or even "the most poweful ballista" . I assume that I am not the only one, so I figured I may as well correct that statement to avoid any confusion (after all - this is "the best hero" thread and not a discussion of the higest possible damage a ballista can do under a certain conditions).

Who is the most potent ballista user?
Russ might be right. Anyway I looked into this rather complicated question and did some tests and calculations. Posting it here would take up a lot of space and as Russ pointed out it might be a little off topic.

The ballista is far from useless.
With enough power & archery skills, you can kill even a 7th lv unit in one turn.
Balita gets double shot & takes twice the damage.
Archery, you add on an extra % of damage.
Orrin being what lv 20 & his archery skill is 50% more.
Plus Expert Archery & if your lucky about getting the artillary skill.
That gun can do some heavy damage.
Kill a dragon in a turn or angel etc.
Even an AA.
Basically Artillary in expert will give you twice the damage with 2 snows & having the skill, the power increases.
Archery you add on the damage of the artillary gun.
Since Orrin is the only hero who expertise on Archery.
Hes simply the best hero for a ballista.

Yes it can become quite powerful, no doubt about that.

Not until he reaches a high level. Barbarians are better simply beacause they have higher attack skills. It takes Orrin to many levels to catch up with this.
If you want a potent ballista user pick Gurnisson over Orrin. Read here.

True but it dont matter for single player games because you can beat the com when your hero is lv 1 .
Multi player, you need to beef up your hero for the final battle.
Early ballista through the game, you dont need that much skill to beat them.
Even though it wouldnt be bad either to have high primary skills early
