treasure chests: gold or xp?

Sorry if this is old stuff, but even google has not found a related thread.

I think one of the most crucial decisions is between gold and xp, when you open a treasure chest, especially early in the game. On the one hand, you need to build your town and buy troops, and would therefore opt for the gold, on the other hand every advancement of your heroes helps taking mines and resources earlier. Of course, map size, difficulty level and the amount of resources and mines heavily influence the decision.
Maybe somtimes it is even worth considering to advance your secondary heroes early by xp gained by treasure chests to profit from nobility/estates/mining or from scouting/stealth in  a long run.
What are your thoughts and experiences, especially for multiplayer games?

no rules but one

seems you answered your own question perfectly -- it depends on situation. which is a totally useless info unfortunately. yet i normally stick to one rule of thumb -- if the strategy includes building a thief (and whenever possible, it should. especially in multi), then only exp should be taken from boxes, and thief must be the guy taking it. if you can develop the thief fast enough, all resources on map will be yours, and you get the gold you spent on training the thief back more than tenfold. ok, you get it back weeks later, but still, at very good interest rate

I really just look at my gold pile when I encounter a chest. If I'm running low and an extra 1-2k gold would be helpful, it's gold. Otherwise, it's exp.

As others have said, it depends on the situation.  When it is not clear that you need cash or that you need experience, I cash in the lowest value chests and take the XP in the rest (the ratio of $ to XP improves as the value of the chest increases).

If it's 1000 or 1500 XP, I choose that, but if it's only 500, I go for the gold.

Also, later in the game (if it's a large map), when (or if) my heroes are like lvl 30, i go for the gold, even though I then usually have more than enough gold.
At times like this (above), I prefer to hire a third hero, if I don't already have one, and let him/her take the XP.

Like you all said, it depends on the situation.

GOLD!!! MORE GOLD!!! I MUST HAVE MORE!!!!!!!!

Actually if I have more than 40000 gold in HOMM4 it's XP, if I have more than 60000 gold in HOMM3 it's XP, if I have over 50000 gold in HOMM2 its XP, and if I have over 50000 gold in HOMM (Which has never happened in the total 8 times I've played it), it's XP.

Is that a good enough answer?

If you have f.ex. a high level of nobility and a lot of creatures to buy, go for the GOLD since fighting other armies is the best way to get exp-points!

MP or SP?

MP, almost always(90%) gold excpet later stages in the game.

For preserve, a druid hero gets first two chest and always go for XP, 2 to get advanced natural magic in case first one is a 500XP chest.

SP, do what you want, I say first gold then XP starting from week 3.
