Neverwinter Nights is without doubt the best game of all time. I have never played a game that interested me in such a maner, and only homm3, Alpha Centauri and Pokemon come close.

Wizards are the best class in Neverwinter Nights (in my opinion), if you are able to play them right. Sorcerers doesnt get the extra feats and skills as wizards do, and if you use the right spells youĻll be able to blow anything up.

The robes included with hotu makes wizards cool I usually use staff with my wizards, though the elven ones use bows.

Hey just a Q for online players... When you try to log onto multiplayer for the first time, and then it says YOU HAVE BEEN BANNED, does it mean that some mofo has used and screwed your cd key?

Questions For The Experts

Now that RL has slowed down a bit, I have once again resumed playing NWN.  My current game is a continuation of my first run-through, and my character is a Human, Male Fighter who has managed to survive and make it to Level 15.  He is a pretty tough dude, but things are starting to get a bit rough for him.  My main objective is to just 'make it through' this first time, then go back and replay the game with another character class, perhaps with an increase in difficulty for more of a challenge.  However, I had some questions for you NWN gurus.  Perhaps you can give me some advice...

As a Fighter, what skills and feats should I be choosing? (I have been using the computer recommendations of the class skills Discipline and Parry thus far.)

Should I consider 'multi-classing' at this point?  If so, what class do you recommend?

Which henchman should I be bringing with me?  (I have been using Tommy Undergallows for his lock picking and trap disarmament.)

How much gold should I be keeping on hand or in reserve?  (I have about 200k right now, but I loathe spending my gold on high-priced items I may be able to find.)

I am really enjoying NWN so far.  I love the Auto-Journal feature, especially with my lack of brain cells, not to mention my short-term memory loss.

Thanks for your help in advance, Heroes!

EDIT: Misspelled BRAIN.

Hey Kayman.
I dont know if you "only" play NwN or do you have the other expansions installed too?
I think it runs like this :
NwN = lvl 20
NwN + SoU = lvl 30 ( + some extra prestige classes )
NwN + SoU + HoTU = lvl 40 ( + new classes and stuff )
But as to how you should lvl your fighter, there are many ways ( bioware.comīs forum  has many guides to how you could lvl specific classes + cross class )
I have recently started a wiz/rouge/fighter ( well recently...I have just reached lvl 40 )
And I did like this :
1-7 = only pts in wiz class, concentration, lore and spellcraft
lvl 8 = rouge pts in tumble ( max )
8-17 = wiz , only pts in the cons, lore and SC
18 = rouge/fighter ( cant remember ) rouge = tumble, fighter = discipline
18-24 = wiz
25 = fighter, discipline
25-31 = wiz
32 = rouge
after this you can pretty much descide yourself ( depending on monster(s) ab and AC where you should put in you last rouge and fighter class, and this way you get to MAX out your tumble AND discipline...which makes your wiz a vesatile "figther" too !
You dont have to spend all your feat points everytime you lvl, you can stash them and use them when you feel like.
As for MY skills, I was lucky to find some cool small/medium weapons, so I took ambidexterity and 2 weapon fighting too....
Of course I "miss" 6 lvls in pure wiz, but now I have an AC of 64 ( w/o spells )so when I run out of spells, I can fight my way out of the trouble.
Come take a look on Alernate Reality / The_Princess_Bride <-- PW action...ī
Hope to see you there

Wealth of Knowledge!

Hey, Sphere!

Thanks for the info!  Although I have been playing Computer RPGs for years, I am still a novice at many aspects of the games, believe it or not (especially with the adaptation of games with the AD&D rules...so many things to learn & memorize).

That was a very helpful description you offered me.  Your character sounds like a very versatile and quite powerful adversary that I would not want to meet in a dark alley.    Just curious...How long did it take you (in real time) to progress that far?

As far as my NWN version, all I am using at the current time is the original NWN game (not SoU or HotU), but I plan on purchasing them once I complete NWN.  I really enjoy the gameplay, especially the quests, and I love the interaction with the NPCs, monsters, and henchmen.  The creators obviously had wonderful senses of humor.

As long as we are on the subject of multi-classing, etc., I had another question for you (or anyone else) about items and spells:

I have been saving all of my scrolls thus far, even though I cannot use them (since I am a Fighter) in hopes of using them someday.  Is this worth it to keep collecting them or should I just sell them?

I am one of those players who hates to discard anything for fear I may be able to use it somewhere later down the line.  Can you say Obsessive/Compulsive?    I loathe paying for items that I could have found for free, but I know there are some things that I must purchase.

Sphere, before I forget, I was (and I am guessing I am still) a member of the Bioware NWN Community, and I used to get some good info from their message board.  Was that what you were referring to?  Or was there a specific section of Bioware's website that can provide me the information about character development?

Thanks again for your help and info.  I appreciate it, and I look forward to hearing and sharing more NWN info here as well.  Onward!

Clone ? :P

Hey Kayman
I must have had expert water and clone on my last post
- Well I usually lvl in blocks of 4 ( after 12 )
- You were/are a fighter ..and you have some cool arcane/divine scrolls !! ever thought about filling in a wiz/sorc/cleric class ? then you, as a fighter, can cast those scrolls you have
fighter xxx lvl <-- like you / wiz ( or whatever ) 1 <-- for the casting and other magic using ( wands ...etc. ) / and  MAYBE a 3 cross to max out a ceartain feat ( rouge / tumble ) <-- example.

-- As for the expansions ..BUY them ( platinum edition is like 20 bucks ) specially HoTU is SOOO cool, and most online servers needs this for joining them. Just a friendly advice, mate
PS. if you really like interaction with NPC/PC take try "fooling" around with all those feats that gives you an advantege in that area A DUMB barb with intimidate +30 can make the most tight up merchant cough up his best wares for no money at all etc. its all there...just for you to figure out
Online : Alternate Reality / The_Princess_Bride   under PW-Action  ... ask for Z ...iLL get you strted up mate cool server for the 25+ age of players

Sphere,

I was just cruising around, and I decided to see what was going on out there in the online world.  I found your server and module last night, and I was going to try to join in, but I forgot I needed the Expansion Packs.  I will try to pick them up this week.  My handle is khayman_nwn.  Thanks again for the info.  Maybe I will see you around soon.

p.s. - I finally completed the original NWN!  I am looking forward to Shadows of Undrentide next!

Yeah, come take a look at AR2, nice chaps and a friendly atmoSPHERE ..lol..
you couls also swing by the AR2 website ( small, but still good enough for "us" to reporing bugs and talking about the server in general )

Hey Kayman_nwn <--
I saw that you swung by the web ( btw its not mine, but mista_woo īs ) and signed up
As to the quote, cool.. nasty finish with those outsiders aye ? ..heh.. I was a lvl 17 wiz and I was LUCKY to complete it in my first try. I "transferred" most of my wiz buff things ( of course) and I took BOTH those swords the guardians drop ..and assigned them to my mercenary in SoU act 1
But, I think it would be a great combo to play offline ( campaigns ) and swing by online from time to time to learn some new tips and play style.
You can start a new charater in SoU,( I did that ) but after that I continued with my "old" NwN wiz all the way through SoU and HoTU , and itīs SO cool to see your charater devlope from lvl 1 to lvl 35+
All for now.

Parry: It's an overall useless skill. I wouldn't use skill points on other things.

There are many powerful character concepts out there, myself I like to combine Rogue levels with Fighter levels, making the first level Rogue for all the extra skill points it gives you. Then you can take one Rogue level in about 4 levels, ending up 16 Fighter and 4 Rogue at level 20.

Fighter can be very powerful and can be very versatile depending on which feats you take. Many of the feats require Int 13 or Dex 13 so you might want to set these two attributes to 14 so you have a broader access to the feats available to you. (disarm, expertise and i think Improved Knockdown requires Int 13, Dodge which is required for many other feats requireS Dex 13.)

I noticed some wrong information in the posts about the expansions.

In SoU you restart with a new character who should end around level 12 or 13 in that game.

For HotU the recommended start level is level 15 and you will end up somewhere between 25-30th level.

If you don't have the expansion I'd recommed the Platinum Edition.

Hey
Not quite true Djive but again true
Yes you start with a new charater in both SoU and HoTU, but you can export your "old" charts. at the end of every expansion ( of course you can export them at will too ) and play on with them in BOTH expansions. Thats what I meant with "seeing your chart. develop from a n00b to a powermachine in the end of HoTU .
Yes, you are given 15 free lvls in HoTU, BUT if you have a lvl 12+ old chart you can gain access with that one too ! .

Of course you can import your NWN character, but it's not recommended.  My lvl 16 fighter waltzed into SoU, began whacking kobalds left and right, and got bored.  It was all the easier because the henchmen automatically matched her level when she hired them.  The module is designed for a lvl 1 character.  Having an old character start that expansion makes no sense either for story or for gameplay.  HotU works better for gameplay, but the story events assume the character is from SoU, not NWN.  Every once in a while, your NWN character will feel like grabbing NPCs by the collar and shaking them.

Parry is a mode you have to select in combat.  I never do, so all the points my fighter sank into that skill were wasted.    Discipline is better; it prevents monsters from doing nasty things like knockng you down and making you drop your weapon.

Hmm

Hey :-)
-Well Kayman AND especially Kahl..whatnot
I can recommend a dex-based fighter/bard/Palemaster.. that bast can pratically take out ALL on ALL servers ( lvl 40 cap ) or not ! ! and ...SOLOING ...best that maties
and that junk-crap-bollocks about parry beeing a critter/nerf skill ..BAH ! ever heard of attack of opportunity ? OOC ? <-- Bard ( 4 lvls ) Best tank build ever, I can take 3 BUFFED HB's before I have to gubble down some healing and I "only" have ( on 8 DIFFERENT servers, from normal drop to costumized ) around 450-600 htp's ! And I use parry ALOT.
-If anyone wanna have some tips to their off/online gaming just drop me a line <--- as in private
-But I think Heroes community have messed up my hotmail , theres a few letters missing ...

- Kayman ya old "soldier" you still playing ? ... I am at Everquest and Guild Wars too :-)

Unless you've seriously botched your build, a lvl 40 anything's going to be nifty.    When I recommend Discipline over Parry, it's based on my experience trying to survive single-digit levels, not epic.  A lack of Discipline can be annoying to fatal. I had a particularly irritating experience in Twilight (custom mod, highly recommended) when Fencer Skeletons sent my lvl ~7 paladin scrambling for her sword every two minutes.  The skeletons would then either poke at her ruthlessly or go kill the vital henchman.    IIRC, in the official campaign, enemies with Knockdown were a bigger problem than Disarm.  There's not much your character can do when they're quite literally sitting around on their butt.  I've never seen the merit of Parry -- your character hardly ever seems to get a hit in, and the monsters take forever to die.  I like monsters to croak as soon as possible.

Then again, I'm the person incapable of passing up the Persuade skill when it's in-class.  (I might miss important information in a conversation!  Horrors!)  So take this with a grain of salt.

Salt and Tequila :)

Hey :-)

-Well Khaelo, I think we are talking about 2 different things here ( 1-40 ) and as you point out single -digit .
-Of course I take discipline, I max all skill nesseceray every time I level up mate .
- Beeing a lvl 40 does NOT mean that all if honkey dorey mate..atleast on some servers, I guess in the various campaigns a lvl 40 can hack/cast its way through all. But I play ( mostly ) on server that Bosses and 70% sub-bosses are set so that you HAVE to team up with others to kill him/her/it :-) And THATS what I like. <-- Still having in mind that a boss for a lvl 40 and a lvl 5 are NON- soloable.
-But as to the Parry "over" discipline, I just enjoy both and think that most toons needs them. But look at the lvl 10 Palemaster skill(s) !!
-Well I guess I have said my part now.

Hmmm, I always rather enjoyed an Elven Druid. She had some rather nasty spells and her familiar was rather buff too. I only got as far as to where you have to kill alot of dragons before I got my can handed to me numerous times.... that was rather depressing. I haven't played it since either...
