Wake of Gods Newbie here :)

Hi there.

I just downloaded Wake of Gods last night, and had a play around with it for an hour or so this morning. I am so happy to say that it worked! I downloaded one of the earlier versions (allinone.zip) since I figured that just having something that worked was better than trying to figure out the whole thing about adding patches and so forth. I did download the Commander patch, but couldn't get it to work. I am not particularly worried about that, however, as I am just trying to have fun with it .

I have a few questions here, which are newbie-ish, and I would like some help from experts here, so that I can get a better idea for how to have fun with the game.

The Single Player Scenario

I first played the Single Player Scenario, which was talking about Vampires taking over the region.

In this one, I wasted a lot of time because I took it at face value, thinking that I had to be able to beat a legion of vampires! . I also had some degree of difficulty navigating the "invisible maze" and lost several turns from going to the wrong squares. I did make it through in the end, however, and got the Crown of the Magi and so forth.

Of course, I felt like saying "D'oh!" because of all of the things that happened which I wasn't expecting. Such as the bird of perception killing the vampires, and the lever releasing all of those behemoths. There I was thinking that the ability to make Trolls was going to be the key ingredient. The game was much more complex than I had first imagined.

Now, as I was heading off to what I presume was the final challenge, I went underground, crossed a lake, and got to a hero there. This hero was apparently my ally since I was able to exchange gifts. However, it was all one way.

Now, no matter what I did, I could not get around this ally, nor could I find some other way to do it. Was there something specific that I had to give them? Or is this because of my "choice" in regards to the witch that I made earlier.

My choice, regarding the witch, was initially to kill her, but when I found that my huge army was reduced to troglodytes, then I figured that that probably wasn't such a good thing, so I went back and paid her the money instead.

Is this why my ally refuses to let me pass? I also refused to turn to the side of evil, and fought the wraiths. Was I supposed to turn to evil?

Please can you help me out there. Thanks. I will assume that it is not a bug meaning that I can't get past. And I don't really want to have to do the thing several times over guessing what is the right combination of choices

WoG Tutorial

You would think that a tutorial was simple. After all, the HOMM3 Tutorial was one of the easiest things in existence.

This one was a little harder, but I was going along fine right up until it was time to demolish the buildings.

So I followed the instructions to demolish the buildings, then turned it into a Castle Castle, and recruited the pikemen as instructed.

The problem is that when I went to the building to drop off pikemen, the building wouldn't tell me what precisely I was supposed to do. I tried to remember, but I couldn't for the life of me remember it precisely. It was something about moving 1 pikeman to the altar. Which altar? Is that the spot which looks like a quest hut? It also said something about right clicking the pikeman to move him. But I tried this in many different combinations and couldn't figure it out.

Rather than spending the rest of my days pulling my hair out, I figured it'd be easier to ask you guys.

WoG certainly is quite challenging in design.

P.S.

Another thing is that on both maps I played, it would have made virtually no difference between playing it on Easy vs playing it on Impossible, since the issue was not based around your initial resources, but rather on decisions that you made. Is this true of all WoG games? If so, then I think I'd just play them all on Impossible even when testing them. I usually do them on Easy or Normal, or at worst Hard on my first run through, just so that I make sure I win and then play it on Impossible later on. But if these are going to be the standards, then I may as well do the lot of them on Impossible straight up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

P.S. I don't mind being called a WoG newbie

On Cave of Gerfrex it diesn't matter what decisions you make - that dude you meet underground should kill a big stack of medusas so you can go past to the fire bridge.

Hi,

I'm glad to hear you got WoG working (3.56 at least). You're right, there is a bug with "Cave of Gerfrex" at that point, although it's not actually a map bug per se. "Cave of Gerfrex" was made with the original pre-WoG scripting language and then updated slightly to work with WoG, but with a subtle change between versions, a bug was introduced.

I think the 3.57 or 3.57f updates may include a version without bugs, but you can also download the latest version from Celestial Heavens or from the Wake of Gods tournament site.

I haven't tested the "Cave of Gerfrex" versio 1.4 update with 3.56 however, but I think they'll work for that version too.

Here's the links:

If anything doesn't work, let me know.

As for the Tutorial, I'm afraid I don't recall exactly, but I know there's a spot not too far from the water where you need to right-click to leave them -- it's an open spot (not a building). I hope that helps a bit.

Well, that's strange, as I recall playing the version of Cave of Gerfrex I found in the allinon zip in full comfort. No bugs no nothing.

Thanks. I had been there trying to click on the Pikemen and right clicking. But you just right click somewhere on the battlefield. So I tried that, and put them everywhere, and it worked out okay.

Haven't got enough time to try out the Gerfex one. I had a quick look there, and that hero wasn't letting me past.

Cave of Gerfrex Help

This is my first single scenario WoG map I have played, and it has been very entertaining and engaging (not to mention pretty darn cool) thus far.  Unfortunately, I have run into some trouble and need some assistance from one of you WoG Heroes.

Warning! Possible Spoiler Below

I have made it past the fire bridge and gathered the faerie dragons.  I had just laid an a$$ kicking on one of the evil guy's henchmen.  However, I ran into a dead end where there was a mountain pass or something blocking my way, and I could not cross.  Is there a secret way past this point or do I need a certain skill such as Pathfinding?  I traveled all the way back to my town in hopes of actually seeing a location or event that I may have missed, but the only item that I can see and not access are the Sandals of the Saint.  Of course, I cannot retrieve them either.

END Spoiler

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Also, Fnord, once again, another excellent map with so many creative ideas and a wonderful storyline.  You are my WoG hero!

Thanks, Ratmonkey!  I must have missed that info (or I am ahead of the script).  I appreciate the help!

Thanks for the compliments, Khayman!  I'm glad you've been enjoying Cave of Gerfrex (my first WoG map...actually, quite possibly THE first WoG map ever made by anyone, or at least the first English one ).

[Spoiler Warning]

Ratmonky's advice is correct except that it's your brother and not your sister that you're waiting for.

You should have received a note from him, just after crossing the bridge where he says he's returning from his travels and you can find him in the tavern the start of next week.

However, if he doesn't (or didn't) appear in the tavern at the start of the new week, it could be a bug. Although it was working fine at first, some ERM version change caused a bug here which I'm fairly certain I fixed for the 3.58 version--but you never know. So if there's no sign of him at all, send me your save game and I'll see what I can do.

[Spoiler Warning Ends]

Either way, let us know if you get past there and are able to finish.
