Good map maker makes a good map. What else?
What shouldn't be in the map? Unbalances & bugs.
Balance between players is important and, to lesser degree, is the balance between alignments. If you are unsure whether one alignment is more powerful than others or not, don't try to balance it.

A good map maker is bringing some new ideas & details to make the game play more interesting.
Make sure it's fair & put in what most players enjoy like more arties or topes etc.
Basically kind of like my job, I do my job to satisfy the customers, you need to make maps to satisfy the players but try new ideas out you never know players may play it alot.

Lately, I've been trying to make faster maps. A quick scan of the ToH maps page will tell you that the faster maps get played more often. On the other hand, you earn no respect for making fast maps. A very complicated map with _tons_ of adventure objects is more likely to earn the admiration of the Heroes elite. I should also note that serious players tend to prefer fast terrains ... grass and dirt. Avoid sand, swamp, snow, and anything else that will slow down an army's movement. At most, cover only small areas of the map with these terrains. A map that's 70% sand, for example, is unlikely to become a favorite.
... and don't even bother with land bridges. Camel has a patent on them, and I don't intend to pay him royalties. lol!

People prefer fast terrain like grass because on other lands thief become a must... so no good for all castles. Only for that one that can afford a thief in the tavern.
