Since the contest is pretty much over, I’d like to post some pictures of the map and show how I think this map should be played. After all, the goal of this thread was to have a constructive discussion after the contest. It is very important to stress that these are only my best strategies, so don’t take them too seriously because I am no veteran. In other words: I could be posting some pretty bad strategies here, so judge them for yourself. I very much appreciate any tips of anybody to improve my skill and I also hope that there are at least some people who can learn from this.

I played this map with foreknowledge, so I’ll let you have this foreknowledge as well. I didn’t reload though. This is how the map looks like:

It is very important to know that you get a small resource bonus of 1000 gold, 5 ore and 5 wood after defeating those 2 behemoth stacks near each mercenary camp.

As you can see, this is a small and resource poor map. The only resources that your immediate starting area contains, are one full set of mines and a windmill. That’s all. You should take this into account when choosing a good town for this map. A town such as dungeon is no good here, because it is very difficult to build your pillar of eyes soon, even when you take shakti as your main hero. The same is true for tower. Stronghold is a very good choice however, because you can build your roc dwelling early, which will give you a fast start. Since there are no resources to build a reasonable starting army, you should choose a hero that already brings a good army. This means that Crag Hack is not a good choice on this map: you can’t get anything done with his 20 goblins so he won’t develop his specialty. The best hero to start with here is Gurnisson. He has an artillery specialty, which means that he starts with a ballista. And since he starts with an attack of 4, this ballista will be able to do important damage in the beginning. As a resource bonus it appears best to choose a wood and ore bonus, because these resources are scarce here. Or as kruel once said: Stronghold has three problems with names: wood, ore and crystal.

Day1:

As you see I got a pretty good start: maximal wood and ore, and a decent army. Gurnisson also got his ballista, which is good because in very rare cases he starts without one (you don’t know how much I wanted to cry when that happened ). The first thing I did is checking my castle. My city hall and citadel were prebuilt and the goblin barracks were already upgraded. On the other hand, I started without tavern and a level 2 building. It is very tempting to engage the goblins, flag your ore mine and after that flag your wood mine. But as Aculias pointed out, you shouldn't use your main hero for such tasks, even though it will cost you wood and ore to not flag these mines at day 1. So instead I visited the star axis and the learning stone. I was very lucky to get advanced artillery offered instead of advanced offense, and I got an attack point as well. This made my ballista very powerful of course, so I was ready to attack the two behemothes near the mercenary camp (see first picture). Fighting the two behemothes is a top priority because of the resource treasure. I couldn’t build anything for today though, so the situation at the end of day 1 looked like this:

Day 2:

At day 2 I attacked the behemoths, losing only 1 goblin. The attack point and resources were nice too, of course. As Aculias also said, I should be flagging more mines with my secondary hero, so I bought a tavern and recruited Pyre. Pyre and her 20 imps defeated the goblins without losses, flagged the stone mine and after that the wood mine. Now Gurnisson should choose his next goal and breaking through the ogres is a logical option as Pyre can flag the other mines too. So at the end of day 2, the situation looked like this:

Day 3:

I let Pyre visit the learning stone where she learned advanced logistics, let her collect 3 sulphur at the windmill and attack the wolf raiders. She lost 1 imp and flagged the alchemist lab. Also, Gurnisson broke through the pack of ogres without losses and I built a wolf pen. At the end of the day, the game looked like this:

Day 4:

I noticed that at the end of day 3 the computer broke through a pack of cyclops kings, but he didn't pose an immediate danger yet. Gurnisson broke through the other pack of ogres and killed the behemothes, both without losses. He also visited the learning stone. Meanwhile I got enough money to buy the cliff's nest and recruit 2 rocs. Since 2 rocs is not enough to defeat that pack of orc chieftains guarding the crystal mine, I let Pyre wait at the castle. At that time, this is how the game looked like:

Day 5:

I let Gurnisson run to the territory of my other ally, while Pyre flagged the crystal mine needed for a possible behemoth build end week 2. But there are other possibilities, such as rushing into the enemy territory at day 7/8. Whatever you choose, I think you have got a pretty good start in the first 5 days:

I like to improve this post with input from especially veterans, so I can make this into a helpful guide (I hope). But gaming tips from anybody are welcome. Also, if you would like to copy my moves that I described, you can download my savegame from day 1 here. Thus you can be assured of a good start and advanced artillery at level 2 (instead of advanced offense). Make sure you download the map from this thread though.

Well for one I would never ever use my main to enter the ore or wood shed.
Or any mines.
2 I dont see how you could of beaten Behemoths day 3 with only 24 hobs & an artillary gun, even if there were only one.
6 att power wont kill hin in enough time
Also you can use a scout like Yog there to take out those mines.
Build some other heroes & switch off your creatures, so you can get a closer start to take on those creatures for your mines.
Once you build your behemoth lair then take on those Ogres.
Or Cyclops joking hehe.

I just noticed look at his Screen shots I think 5-6.
The one before he attacks the Behemoths & the one after.
25 reg gobs spread in dif slots & then the next day 24 upgraded gobs hehe.
Either he was confident he can beat 2 behemoths with half the gobs or these Behemoths had a permanant sprain ancle .

Hehe Eat your heart out Andi & Motor, if Wub can beat 2 Behemoths on day 3 with 25 REG gobs with a gun, then I am sure he can become an emperer in a few days .

Now to put my money where my mouth is hehe.
I bet you all the money in my pocket right now 38 bucks that Kuma is taller then all of you that posted on this thread so far hehe.
No Stiven your firewall dont count as your hirght & no Andi your Mullet dont count either

Thank you very much for your feedback, Aculias . I played the map again, posted new pics and changed my advices.

Quote:

I try to avoid that too, but I feared that I would lose too many resources if I don't flagged my mines right away. But I followed your advice and flagged the ore and wood mine immediately when I could buy a second hero. It works great! Thanks.

You're absolutely right. I shouldn't have used my main for easy fights. So I let my secondary hero (Pyre) do that too. Great advice again . Playing Heroes can be so easy when you think of it .

I tried really hard to build more heroes, but I just don't have the money for them. You don't mean I should build 2 heroes instead of a castle, right? Also I don't understand completely why I should get creatures of my main, because in this case that will not make my main move faster (he carries only 1 creature type with him).

Quote:

I don't see why I should wait before I have behemothes to break through because a pack of ogres is an easy block and Red and Blue are my allies, not enemy.

But I do feel that I did a lot better this time, as you can see in the pictures.

Oh and about beating those behemothes; it's really easy. I think many of you underestimate the power of the ballista. A level 1 Gurnisson does indeed few damage against those behemothes (17 damage at average). But at level 2, with advanced artillery and an extra attack point, Gurnisson does an average of 49 damage each turn. That is because, the attack skill and the base damage of the ballista are increased and also the ballista shoots twice and has a bigger chance to do double damage. Moreover, the terrain was very favourable.

I somebody has improvements or questions, I would like to hear.
