regarding stealing names

Stealing of names has been isolated, and only one case in TOH.  It was simple though; the person required to change their name, when the original player wanted their handle back.

In homm4 TOH, when the automation is finished, all TOH veterans (the dragon/wyvern icon guys) will be able to preregister before the game is actually released.

Supporters Page

i agree compulsory membership fees r too hard to manage and bring unrealistic expectations of what u get for $10 lmao, but an organised way of getting donations from members would surely help.

I suggest a "Supporters Page" linked to toh home page for donations. On the supporters page do a breakdown of the costs of running toh so ppl know their donation is going to expenses. As well have proposals of things that can be added if enough donations arrive, bit like a building fund. Then suggest different gifts that ppl can give. Probably minimum of $25 cuz of handling fees. Maybe 25,50,100 as 3 amounts. This would be independant of any membership of toh or points or anything else, sort of stand alone. I think it is a simple enough idea.

For Example...

This is a list of financial supporters of TOH:

Silver:
zombie head
wolf god
hottie2go

Gold:
bob21

The projects they help fund are:

$x/mth for site hosting
$y/mth average for site maintenance
$z for new abcdef feature

If i wish to join them you can do so by sending credit card details and amount to:
something@somewhere

suggested amounts are:
$25    Silver Supporter
$50    Gold Supporter
$100   Platinum Supporter
$200+  TOH Partner

I would like that but....

Ive always considered this, with donations and such; it is a wad of money im spending here.   But a few examples of situations has made me pessimistic of it being possible.... one right here on the HC page.   Valeriy put up a donations on top, for people to submit donations.  There are 500 or so members here now.  Guess what?  Not one has submitted a donation according to Valeriy to help support this Heroes Community site.

So would it be the same on TOH?  I am confident that some would send some form of donation, but if it totals a few generous people, adding up to $200 or the like, is it worth it then?  That would pay for 5% of my costs.

But Midnight Wraith, I will consider it, when homm4 TOH opens up, question is still up in the air as to how it is donated.

Donations would give the player a icon on their player info showing that they submitted an x amount (like a medal).  That is a good idea.

build it and they will come... not quite

Yeah Ves, i'm dubious of ppl's nature when it comes to parting with cash. Building a donations page will not be enough, like anything that requires ppl to give $ u need to soft sell them the reasons and benefits of why they should do it. I see that in churches which operate completely on donations. I see the bleeding heart adverts on TV for world vision (more of a hard sell). I see the inflated price chocolates that schools sell to raise $ for new sports equipment. And unfortunately u need to keep "selling" cuz ppl forget fast.

The trick is to make it visible (i never saw the one for Valeri's msg board) and to make it an attractive thing to give. I dont like guilt based giving that many charities do, but i will buy school or theatre fund raiser raffle tickets even though i dont want the meat tray or other gimick cuz i support what they do. But i dont get up and go down to the school and give them $ because they need it. I'm lazy like 99.9% of the human race.

ppl in toh do crazy things for medals and status of one sort or another so it might work as a motivator. A medal has perceived value, so u get something for ur cash. As well as thanking them publicly on the news section of toh home page. You would be suprised, if it becomes socially acceptable to make a small donation then ppl will do it. Based on the size of the thread on honor, value systems r very important to the heroes community.

The other gimick is the "building fund" idea, tell everyone in the most lavish way possible what a great new toh feature (must be a good one) they can have, then dont give it to them. lmao, it works so well. Then whilst everyone is salivating for this new thing, set a target of $ to raise so that u can afford to get it built and ask for donations. Wheel out those thermometer diagrams with $ progress on it... man it has all been done b4

The problem i see is it is not face to face which ppl respond to more readily. Can be a bit remote on the internet. Cant hurt to try as long as u dont get disappointed by a small response. It is a punt, but if it starts to work it needs constant promotion or it will die fast.

plebe

Quote:
And this is the prime purpose of getting better at the game! You don't like being a plebe, then play some games! You don't have to win all of them to become a good player. You are no less intelligent than the rest of us who play, why should it be any different to you when it comes to who's good and who isn't? You are not content with lowly rank names yet you claim to be content with a lowly rank. Simple answer to that solution is play, learn and grow. And besides, the rank of plebe is not absolute, it only applies to those of us who have less than 4 games under our belts. After that, well then, you get a half decent half respectable rank name anyway (even if people still do treat you like a nobody, LOL!).

*smile*

I still dissagree with you.  However I have just found out that I am now a cadet, but that does not change the way i feel about the plebe rank.  It is a very negative and humilitating title to give anybody when they start from scratch.

When Heroes IV is in operation, most of us will be back at the start of the ranking system.  But it is up to me to decide whether to play 4 games just to get above that rank.

Have you looked up the name Plebe in the dictionary?

Well I'll tell you. Plebe mean a coarse uncultured person. A person of the lower classes.

Now that is a worst title to give anyone in a ranking system, mitilary or fantasy.

Todays armed forces don't get that title, they get the rank of soldier, again better name than plebe.

Ancient civilisations were given titles either of Warriors or Soldiers.

Apart from TOH nobody uses Plebes as a rank anymore.

When Heroes IV is out I may decide to play maybe 2 serious games and the rest for fun.  But again it is up to me to decide whether i want to stay as a lower rank or go higher.  And any person with a lower rank should have a better title than plebe.

I am ready!  I love the idea of donations. There are tons of people who prolly wont donate.. only because there is noone that says they have to.  I think you should make a page that shows the break down of the money coming out of your pocket.  I bet people would be amazed!
Here is example:

Ves spends outta pocket $2,000 per month for automation.

Now do you really think it is that hard for each player who enjoys there time in TOH and appricates it to donate $5.00

The main page says there is 2600 active players right now in TOH.  As as I here the number of active players in HOMM4 will og up 5 X.   So even if we just say 10,000 active players in TOH.  If every player donated $2 - $5 that would generate $20,000 - $50,000  that would pay for 2 years of automation for TOH.

Thats an average of $3.00 from each person 1 TIME only.  Not per month just a 1 time donation.

These are just some ruff figures but think about.  Put the donation page up Ves.  I will gladly donate.  I appriciate TOH and enjoy my time there.

Donations

I would glady contribute a nominal fee of $5, heck i think many of us would even pay that per month to play.  I know i would.  But that is unrealistic as TOH is already free.

But the idea of a donation page, where you can donate if you want.

Sounds good to me

If you visit the homm4 TOH page right now, two rankings names have been changed:

Overlord (top rank) is now Emperor
Plebe (lowest rank) is now Recruit

All other ranks stay the same, and are now set in stone, as the data has been sent to the automation team to work on.

PayPal

The PayPal internet system is world wide now and all I would have to do is send a message to have a donation sent to the ToH account. It would take no effort at all for Ves to "cash the check" so to speak. The only thing he might do is keep track of the receipt messages to post a "gold medal"
or something. (and maybe keep the IRS happy) I havent even played in the current tourney but I would send $5 just cause it would be so easy to do and for a worthwhile cause.

PayPal?

I don't think I can use PayPal. I don't think I can send money using Internet services at all, because I do not have a bank account...sorry, girls...
I think I should mail the money somehow in the post office, but I will need an adress or a mailbox in order to do that.

donations on TOH

I have had enough people email me to encourage me to put a donations section, and I appreciate all the support I can get; this whole venture will be expensive.   But this support will not be open or available until the homm4 TOH is completed and open to the public.  But to get an eye of what icon would be placed on the player rankings of a donator, visit these two links:

http://www.toheroes.com/heroes4/rankmain.html  - view non-medal key
http://www.toheroes.com/heroes4/tempemperor.html  an example of how the new TOH ranking page will kinda look like.

essentially a 'gem' of different color depending on the amount donated.  There will also be a donations page which will list and thank anyone who has donated.  I would assume I could apply the paypal system, but also have a p.o. box for donations by money order, check or cash for example.

If ya see me on the zone, gimme a shout.  I'd be happy to play with ya again!

Donations...

For myself I am not much interested in the medal or gems, but I imagine others might be. I have always thought the medals were the silliest part of Toh, but that is just me- I enjoy the tournaments and the shield domination wars and stuff like that, but anyway- I think it's a good idea to let people choose. I know I wouldn't mind paying $5 at all- I spend more than that on lunch which I eat in a half hour and forget about. I played hours of ToH and I barely have half the games of most veterans.

Also- one of the things I like best about ToH is people from all over the world play here; it's always fascinating for me to talk with someone from China, or Turkey, or New Zealand or wherever, but while I think most people who have computers and internet access to play online games could afford $5- sometimes it is proportionally more for them than it is for others. Also how about the younger people? I think mostly 20's or older seem to play ToH but there are younger players, I know if ToH had existed when I was first online I certainly would have played here, but $5 meant alot more to me then than it does now. I think I might have played my first ToH H2 game when I was only 16 or 17... so with all different people from all different backgrounds, it is reasonable to let them choose and also give some recognition, but I would hate to see everyone feel obligated to donate. If they did it out of their own sense of responsability its much more meaningful, and just as likely to get almost as much money generated as pressure in this situation I think.

PayPal

I forgot about all the Heroes players that dont have bank accounts yet, so you will need a PO Box in addition to PayPal. But set up the account, it will take you 5 minutes to set it up and it even draws interest at higher rates than my bank pays 8) You can transfer the gold directly into your checking account from there. I will even make the first deposit so you can see how it works!

*DISCLAIMER*
I do not work for PayPal nor will I be paid by PayPal in any way for this post. This is not spam

Expecially the fancy coins and writing.

I also like the recruit rank, a much better suugestion than my own.

Keep up the great work
