Creature Portal Question

What creature would you recommend me getting from the creature portal to round out my arsenal? I usually have Ranger, Wolf, Sprite, Elf, Unicorn, and Phoenix.

No way! Go for Waspworts - slow but deadly, especially when defending your castle. Or Mantis if you have time. You can usually get Elves elsewhere on the map...

IMO speed is essential when you are nature.
people usually go for water elementals, but I would pick air elementals or mantis, waspworts are damn slow.

I've actually decided to go Water Elemental, but thanks anyway.

Oh, and by the way, Dread_Knight, why would I need to choose between Elves and Unicorns? They both compliment a defensive strategy, and I stress defense.

Water Elemental is a powerful creature, too. I usually summon them, but go for Waspworts if I need to defend my castle. WEs don't retaliate to shooters, do they? When it comes to offense, Mantis is the best choice by far. Depends on your style and tactics.

For the Creature Portal, I would normally suggest Water Elementals in most circumstances because they kill big time even in moderate numbers, but if you have more than 1 preserve and a mantis nest, then mantises might be the way to go.

I advise that you never use the Creature Portal for Leprechauns, Satyrs or Earth Elementals - those creatures aren't worth the extra growth.

Mantis is great against Black Dragon

Mantis DOES bind Black Dragons, giving you about as much time as you need to finish them or other stacks. Water elementals are great, but I prefer Mantis - Fast, very strong, first strike (so you can avoid losses quite easily), and takes care of nasty units.

The Water Elementals have a nice array of spells though and that's what pushes them above Waspworts and Mantises. The only problem is that since they are spellcasters, they retaliate against shooters.

Creature Portal ...

... for defending your Preserve, Waspworts cannot be beat. For offense, Mantis are great but you only get one a week. Water Elementals are also another great choice because they can cast Ice Bolt & the ever popular Quicksand. So, it's really up to each individual & each map. Some times I even go for Fire Elementals.

Yeah, Fire Elementals are probably the second best elemental.

What about air elementals. Their very fast speed and their insubstantial ability make them very good hit-and-run killers. Plus you get 9 a week through the portal and with GM summoning, you can get an extra 4-5 a week (provided that you only have one type of elemental in your army).

Yeah, but Air Elementals are really too offensive for my taste. I prefer a "let the enemy come to you" battle plan and this requires a healthy amount of ranged units and spell casters. Unicorns also fit in well with this strategy. That's usually why I go with Water Elementals and occasionally Fire Elementals, if the opponent has Cold Resistance, which is an extremely rare case.

yes, but if you want to retain high movement for your army you are forced to have tigers and play offensively. that's the main reason to buy air elementals, plus of course their high defensive stats.

Provided I require a mobile hero. I play defensively not only in battle but on the adventure map as well.

wait for your enemy:

the strategy is cool, with few exceptions though: opposing cyclops will never come close to your army as long as they have some boulders left. Once they run out of ammo, they will come to you, that is, if there is something left to come to...
