Bringing random games back to random - anybody interested?

I can offer an option for those who want to play balanced random maps and make no necro-flux restarts, but don't want to know the exact template, which they are playing.

The idea is simple: i (or actually anybody else with basic knowledge about rmg.txt) can make a single rmg.txt file with some 10-20 best templates within. But different names of the templates should be replaced with one, identical name (e.g., "Myth template"). As a result this rmg.txt file will create only good, but diferent templates; also the players will not know which template they are playing.

If anybody is interested in such a "nameless template collection", i can make it and send it to u. Even more, u can choose which templates u want in that file or i can pick up some 10 or 20 that i like best.

So is anybody interested?

Good idea. it should post the rmg files somewhere cause email sucks. And btw can it ban dd fly hillfort carto too ?

So plan for future goes something like that:
I'm starting to prepare the file. Meanwhile we can make something like poll "which templates u would like to see in this file" - so everybody is welcomed to state their own favorites, be it templates of toh players or original 3do's templates.

My initial idea was to include some 10 "hand-made" templates (mostly Midnights + one or two more). Also from best templates we can include even older versions (e.g., i think it would be pretty good to put in the file not only current version of "Blcbuster" but older versions as well).
And, of course, for an additional flavor we can add some 5-10 templates from original 3do file.

However the content of the file is open for discussion. Even more, if there will be completly different views about what should be in this file, i can make a separate files for everybody

Very good idea about posting this file - only there i certainly need help from somebody who knows how to do it. May be we can even ask Kitten or Raven to post this file somewhere on Myth site.


As for banning things - sorry, dudes, no way to do it Only part we can do in this file regards Xar's idea about banning necro&flux in all templates, even in original ones.

Also one more option is to alter a little some of the original templates before we include them in the file - to increase zone guards, reduce/increase richness, etc. (something like Midnight did with 2sm.. and Dwarven Tunnels for MapMasters tourney).

Ok, that's plenty of ideas, so don't get confused
At least mininum that each law-abiding citizen of Toh can do is to make a list of templates, so go for it

 You cant ban objects or spells from a template. Objects can be made so that they are less likely to occur by carefully sellecting their values and spells cannot be banned at all, so it just comes down to agreements between players on that one.

good idea zil, i was gonna be less democratic, just push out a file one day with 1/3 3do temps and the rest custom with settings that i like on them

One thing that needs to happen on the templates is proper restriction of size. There are some temps that work great on M/under but terrible on XL. I was gonna go through them and restrict to one size per template (unless multiple ones exist) to get the best game experience. For example Panic suits M/under, and maybe L, but no other sizes r much good.

The best way to tune the 3do templates is to reverse engineer their design. Meeting in Muzgob & Dwarven Tunnels has design flaws that mean u always meet early, but the templates have good potential.

made use of a day off work

I've made 3 files to add to Zilo's and Kuma's that will always say "Template is Random"

1. original 3do templates

2. 3do templates with crappy ones i dont like removed, and no necro/flux as start towns

3. custom templates i like (not just mine ) to a size i think suits the templates, and some modified 3do temps to stop early meetings and necro/flux start. Also minimised conserves and lvl 7 dwellings on most temps.

I'm still checking them but will release at same time as Extreme II.

Mix (3) allows the following variety of templates on each size:
5xM
6xM/U
14xL
10xL/U
17xXL
7xXL/U

I've tried hard to target the template for what size(s) it suits best so u dont get a crappy map from misusing an otherwise good template.

I'm never gonna tell what templates i put in there so it will remain a secret though a regular player will prolly recognise a few of them.

Midnight sent me his Midnight Mix (number 3 in his thread above) to me this morning - it looks pretty good, actually i would make the file almost in the same way. By taking into account that, i feel that there is no need for separate Zilo mix file. So i will try to help Midnight with his mix as much as i can, and i'm sure u all will enjoy it when it will come out!

At the same time, if there are someone who want to get his personal rmg.txt with his favorite templates, but is not sure how to make - feel free to contact me, and i will make it for u!


@Kuma: when Midnight mix will be ready, it will include all best L/XL templates so i think that there is no need for separate file.


@Splexx: hio, man! About a month ago, motivated with a need to finish my master studies, i took SoD CD in my palm and broke it to small pieces... Yet i think i'll be back soon, so we will have some cool games.

If it would be helpful, I would be willing to post your "Random Mix" to the rmg.txt maps page. Just send it to me with maybe a little description such as "L and XL" maps only. Or "3DO Originals" or something that gives players kind of a general idea what they can find. I was originally going to ask that you list all the templates you included in it to go in the description, but Midnight already said he was never gonna tell, lol. OH, and how are you guys going to want to report these? I mean are you going to go back to the "Random, M, L, XL" or did you want a "Random Mix" selection?

Posting on Random Map page would be great, only there should be some thoughts how to show that this mix file is something different than simply new template.

As for reporting - for me "random mix" sounds fine

hmm

randoms never been random tho, u always knew what u was playing template wise, and then u use ur template knowledge as to how to play.

duno if playing "blind" gonna work. i can c it causing problems, like those players that gonna walk past misplaced gaurds only to find that its BB and meet wk 1 then lol.

Nah, not so pessimistic Maxi; good players will never walk passed misplaced guards.
A guard never stands there enjoying the view; if it's not guarding anything like resources or arti, it's guarding a new area.

Misplaced guards are among the hardest thing to settle on I think. For me, part of the charm of a random has always been to "cut through the map likea  razor made of water".. squeezing trhough, cutting down monsters that cant be avoided..

Misplaced guards is easy to settle on on BB and other custom maps with areas that are separeted by guards. I guess killing 1 of the guard stacks is enough to deserve passage..

But its hard to know whats misplaced and whats just placed.
