Vintage Thread Forum - opinions?

Asking for opinions on a Vintage thread Forum. (Erlier suggested by Oldtimer in another topic)

I took up the idea with Valeriy and the HC script does support "restricting" members from creating new topics in a Forum. Overall Moderators feel the idea of a Vintage Thread froum is good, so this topic is made to let you give your opinion about it.

This Forum will work a litte differently than the others.

Rules for the New Forum.
- Members cannot create topics in the New Forum, but have normal rights in regards to posting to threads in the forum.

- The only way to get a Thread into the Forum is by having a moderator move it. And this is done by suggesting it in the Nomination thread, and getting enough support for the idea.

Rules for the Nomination thread.
- We will have a nomination thread in the Tavern. (This Thread will be sticky).

- Require 5 members and 1 Mod to say 'yes' in the Nomination Thread before moving thread. (The Mod is to counter poor or unsuitable threads getting into the vintage thread forum. And this could happen for a variety of different reasons.)

- We could also have rules for automatically moving threads. Then we need to require perhaps 300 posts or/and 5000 views plus a moderator wanting to move it.

- The new forum should not have more than about 100 topics in it (current forum). If we allow more then we probably allow too much or we deplete too many good topics from the Tavern (and possibly other Forums).

- We also need some rough idea on which topics are "vintage topics". A definition of this is needed. (In my opinion threads for Word Games are not Vintage Topics, even if they fulfill the formal requirement otherwise.)

- Moderator posts first post in the Nomination thread. This post is kept updated by tavern mods. (Could also be done by  member if this can be agreed with the tavern Mods.)

- Mods delete posts in the Nomination thread after having updated the first post with the request.

- Spams and tosses are deleted in the Nomination Thread. (The thread should not be allowed to grow beyond page 1.)

Summary:

The Vintage Forum Rules:
1. No topic creation in new Forum. Posting otherwise functions as normal.
2. Moderators move topics to Forum as decided by the "Nomination" Thread in the Tavern.
3. Use of a "Nomination" thread in the Tavern.

Member Feedback is asked for in following areas:
1. Number of members who must want a topic moved before it is moved.
2. Suitable number of topics for the new forum. Is 100 a good number?
3. Any automatic rules for moving topic. (Like: Thread Size or Thread Views) Good idea?
4. Any other comments and feedback.
5. Suggested name of the new Forum.

love the idea.  Like a wastelands in reverse lol!

1. Number of members who must want a topic moved before it is moved.
I'd say between 5 and 10:- that way a small circle of spamming or tossing friends can't gang up on everybody by proposing riduculos threads

2. Suitable number of topics for the new forum. Is 100 a good number?
Hmm... I don't know.  I really don't.  Can't be too many though can it, or they just wont be read..

3. Any automatic rules for moving topic. (Like: Thread Size or Thread Views) Good idea?
I'm really not sure you can judge... to use an example, "current thingies@!" is hardly gonns end up in there, despite it's high post count.

4. Any other comments and feedback.
This is a good idea.. although I'm not entirely sure of the specifics.  It will also be nice to show that there are threads worth reading outside of those that get QPs, and also help us weed out the spam a little!

5. Suggested name of the new Forum.
"The Seer's Hut", Maybe?  Or "The Cartogrpher" (it is a guide of sorts after all...?) "Guardian of Earth". Err... I'll get back to you when I've worked less and had more sleep.

Sounds like an excellent idea as it will enable many threads such as the photo thread and other threads to remain both active by being on the front page of their forum, and also solve some of the sticky related issues.

The point of the forum is mainly up to the members to decide and influence, which is why this thread was posted here to gather opinions and feedback.

Overall the moderators are positive to the idea for their own reasons, and these need not really be discussed here.

It's however not moderator business to fully define the forum, because if we do that then members have nothing left to give opinions on. In other words, this thread would be pointless.

I don't like the name "vintage."  It suggests out of date.

How about "Prime Time?"

I think that members must require a certain QP level before deciding what is a vintage topic. Whether it's 3 stars or simply 0 and up. I would like to see this as a level of 3 stars to really give benefits to 3 star members. Also only known members should be allowed to nominate threads. So we don't have aliases or people who have made like 20 posts choosing threads for the vintage.

Threads that qualify as "Vintage"

1.) Threads with QP's in them should be in the forum.

2.) If a thread is nominated into the forum and no QP's have been given, then the best poster(s) in that thread should get a QP or at least be given a strong consideration.

3.) Post count or view should be a qualification. Assuming it's not a word game.

I think that QP-worthy posts are in just about all good threads. If not then if the thread is really that good, then it will eventually get enough posts to qualify.

Other than this I see no other qualifications.

let's call it either the...

Garden of Revelation or..

Learning Stone

I think Learning Stone is not a bad name for the new forum.

I propose a new forum called the prison.Members are trapped there for 'naughty' or unacceptable behaviour until a referendum of 20 votes and above will free the member. The prison restricts members to posting only in that forum with increased floodprotect.Once the 'prisoner' is released all of his or her's threads/posts are deleted.

And no..that's no stupid...that's a way to help people who've been silenced.they can only talk to their fellow silenced mates there, nowwhere else, isolated from the rest of HC.To make things worse for them, everyone else is denied access there.Maybe mods can view it,but can't post there..

IMHO

IMHO=In My Humble Opinion

Also, this would take as much or more scripting than the semi-mod idea that was shot down, we have the tools to silence a member now (totally) and that is a better fix than a to restrict them to one forum. So no need for prison. just more work for moderators for no gain. If someone is worthy of this prison, why wouldnt we just silence them totally for a period?

Maybe we would like to ask them to apologise to all mods and members of HC for causing inconvienences?

And if they don't apologise, they can't be unsilenced.

I just returned back from a place called turning point in my school, not exactly a nice place but I've learnt many things there..

Attitude is everything.

I have to agree with Zud here. Prisons are not a good idea.

Better to totally restrict posting than leave out one Forum. Member can still send IMs when silenced anyway, and so can protest against silence that way.

Really when making changes to a forum. One needs to take a couple things into account. There are two sides. The advantages and the disadvantages. If the advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages then it should be done.

Advantages:

* Silenced members get to argue their case in front of the whole forum to see and are still able to post.

Disadvantages:

* These members have clearly done something wrong. And restricting posting to one forum may be seen to some as a mere slap on the wrist, since they can still wreak havoc in that forum.

* Soccerfeva. You were very angry at the mods and sent them insults and such. What do you think would have happened if you could post all that stuff for everyone to see? Members in prison would mostly likely retaliate by trying to give the mods hell. Which can be done very quickly.

* This forum would require far more upkeep from the mods than any other forum, because these members have done something to get in their that causes problems. So the mods would be putting more work into a forum that would be only a bunch of problems.

Overall:

This system creates hassles for the mods. I personally find prisons to be illogical. Why should we put so much effort in taking care of the scum of society? We give them food, shelter, clothing. I think that prisoners should be required to work in mines or things like that. We shouldn't be supporting these people when they give nothing back to us except trouble. They should have to carry their own weight. Or be subject to solitary confinement.

If members want to be unsilenced they should have to do something to make up for all trouble they have created.

My point is that all the threads can be deleted at once after members have filled in a declaration form that they will not cause inconveninces or trouble to HC,it's members and mods, anymore.

After that the declaration forms can be kept in one place and the nonsense that the post can be deleted.-qps applys to breaking of faq rules and bear in mind that members can't post there.

What do you think?

what do I think

I think it has already been said.....

not a great idea

If a member misbehaves, we silence them. if they dont like it, they should obey the CoC.  I have no desire to maintain a forum for the problems. and they have no need for a "community review" of their issues.

They can complain in the Turban Tribunal when the silence is lifted.

It's better to do it after the silence is lifted because the likely response if the silenced member made the complaint directly is another dose of profanity, with penalties and extended silence as a consequence. The risk for flame debates and incoherent accusations and suggestions is obvious.

And before that point the member can argue the fairness of the case through IMs to Mods and/or Admin.

And IMs is much better medium to discuss this since there are often good reasons to keep part of the discussion away from the forum, and these reasons extends to both the Mods and for the silenced Member.

Now, please.... Return to the Vintage Topic suggestion, and comment on that.
