no way, fairies are what you need. If you're looking for hit points and strength you need to pick phoenixes of course, but the fairies are the better choice with their confusion, I know I've won quite some battles with fairies, which I would have lost if I had phoenixes.

I'll probably go with the Dragons since i'll (hopefully) just be able to summon phoeni by the time the game starts getting somewhere lol... a team of Faerie Dragons, Mantises, and some summoned phoeni should be enough to do the trick

now that's pure nonsense, you can summon fairies aswell, and by the time you have gm nature magic you should have build your level four dwelling, and it would be pretty stupid to build your mage guild up to level five just to know what spell you're gonna get, when you can't cast it. So you can't base your choice on what spell you're going to get...

Go Phoenix. It gives some push to the nature's arsenal.

Mage guilds in HOMM IV are so cheap that you can actually build it just to pass time, and checking your top spell beforehand is a really good strategy. Furthermore, it being dragon strength can tilt the choice towards phoenix as well (fairies wont benefit from it). But "1 FD better than 1 phoenix is" Confusious says...

well, since u can afford to lose the army u summon via spells on the battlefield, but u have to keep ur original army from being killed,I'd say water elementals and fairydagons are better to be reqruited, since they stay in the back, while those that will actually attack the enemy in melee, air elementals, phoenix and mantis are better to be summoned in the battle!

The fairy dragons are somewhat like the bone dragons. The magic forest require some of everything while the pyre requires lots of mercury. Some of everything is definitely easier to get than lots of mercury. So, I usually pick fairy dragons.

you cannot summon 10 phoenixes in the beginning of battle, but you can collect them by recruiting. thus my rule: summon those who are useful in small amounts (WE - quicksand & slow, FD - confusion) and recruit those that have to be in high numbers (like phoenix or griffins).

Ahem!!!

Well, if you're after the strength, check the campaign editor. Put a random monster wherever. Check its properties.

Black Dragons are "1", They're the strongest among all. The next is the Dark Champion "1-2" and then Evil Sorceress "1-2". I think. But Phoenixes and Faerie Dragons are both "2-3".

Hmm... Efreeti are "9-13" and Nightmares are "10-15" which concludes...

...that we should build the volcanic vent and not the blackwood!!!

Well, it really depends on your strategy... I'm just an efreetlover!!!

But it's a disadvantage that the Computer can attack your Phoenix, make the Phoenix retaliate, and in doing so, roast a couple dozens of your Griffins, or what other creatures you may have in front...

Fiery Breath (or whatever the special skil is called) is a real two-edged sword. It strikes both ways...

I like that you can use rebirth to "Top off" a stack of Phoenix's without waiting until they die

I also like the spells naturally of the dragons... so it is a toss up.

It usually boils down to the map I'm on, if I think the magic will be more handy etc.
