Stevie said: I hope you're kidding. In the end it's the exact same thing.
well, that's not realy it. Because no map is 100% desert for eg. So, even tho you cherry pick, you pick diferent skills each time.
If it was all the same, then it was all the same no matter what school of magic you pick also - hint: Introduce terrain base bonuses to magic schools - example - watter deals bonus dmg in swamps. Then, you will always choose the school, that would benefit you most, which would be diferent. You will not get situation with: "always start with Vampirism"

And I like that. And why I dislike Poker. I get that's strategy involved. but diferent kind. I hate "poker-kind" strategy, which H5 random skillwheel promotes. There.
Then I guess we will have to agree to disagree. You dislike any appearance of a factor on which you have no control whatsoever, while Stevie, Chris and I clearly enjoy the thrill the random roll of the dice brings us.

Can somebody catch me up please: why talks about random skills began again?
I thought there will be 2 systems: non-random and random. If you like random, turn it on. If you don't, then play non-random. A perfect compromise if you ask me.
What's with this discussion again? Or I misunderstood something?

The big one about randomness?
Thanks for catching me up. Though I still don't understand why we have this discussion if there will be random skills in the game.

Because the core is non-random. As I understood, Stevie shared his fears about the success of random implementation, and IMO brought up very valid points.

I would say the core is random. H7 skills will be mediocre with random system in place, because of class restrictions, but awful with non-random way. This is because they are general skills (as oposed to specialized) and they have no prerequisites. Good for random, bad for non-random.
@Maurice: Prety much ... When I play strategy, I want to be in controll. That is why I see H6 skills had potential. But it was squandered, like alot of other things done by Ubi. If skills were like in H5, but non-random, it would be much better. If there were some tweeks done to it, to accomodate non-randomness, it could be awsome.
I do on other hand enjoy the trill of random dice roll in some parts. But then, I don't want to plan around chance based stuff. I'm not the person who enjoys chance based bets

Stevie said: Stronghold Townscreen in Details
GOVERNOR:
"Did you reserve the blue cave for the Behemoths? You remember they are arriving tomorrow?"
ASSISTENT:
"No sir, the goblin riders demanded the cave for their basilisks so i had to agree. They are the last group in the village we want to make angry, right?"
GOVERNOR:
"Good thinking! The Behemoths can live... ha! That pile of rubbish right there should suffice! I mean how much room do those things even need. They will be delighted!"
ASSISTENT:
"Sir... I dont think they can even fit inside that thing. With some luck they can squeeze their luggage and the baby Behemoths in there, but the adults would have to live outside. Day and night... and you know how freezing the nights in the desert can get?"
GOVERNOR:
"Of course I know! But thats why the grownups have that arctic white fur in the first place. Thats what the wise men call the survival of the fittest. You should look it up, dummy! Now that we have that overly huge Mage Guild building in the village it shouldn't be that hard to educate yourself. People should use it more... Its already collecting dust..."
ASSISTENT:
"Why did we even build it... we all know how much barbarians are into magic... That facility could house the entire population of this desert! I think that Guild was the biggest investment blunder of the last fiscal year..."
GOVERNOR:
"Maybe... but there is no going back so we just have to live with it. And at least now we have something to show to those snobby elves when they arrive for their yearly health and safety inspection."
ASSISTENT:
"We should start making our way up to the City Hall for the council meeting, sir. Oh and maybe on the way you could decide if there is any need to build a protective wall around the village?"
GOVERNOR:
"Actually, I was just think about that... It think its a good idea. These are restless times after all. And i know right where to start the construction... dont look right away, but there is that weird landscape artist again on the hill to the east... he is really starting to creep me out. Just painting and staring at us all day you know... Totally neglect all the other threats to the village. Just block that creep out of here. But make it a pretty wall... maybe some of the local flora to spice it up?"
ASSISTENT:
"Absolutely, sir! While we are climbing up the cliff from this side, you can actually see what the towns people did to the Cyclops resident right over there. Tore it down completely and replaced it with one of those ugly excess pillars we mistakenly produced last month for the totem garden..."
GOVERNOR:
"Hahaha! Thats guaranteed to make them enraged when they return from their vacation. By the way, why on earth did we end up building the most important and frequently used building in the most difficult place to reach?"
ASSISTENT:
"You mean the City Hall, sir? You especially wanted it here so that we could get rid of the elderly and other annoying citizens that would crowd the halls with their complaints."
GOVERNOR:
"Ahhh indeed. I'm not that stupid after all. At last we are at the top. Geez... I'm sweating a river here. Tell the market place folk below that my sweat will be creating a temporary source of precious water in the form of a waterfall."
ASSISTENT:
"Way ahead of you, sir. I already informed them about our climbing schedule. They have been rounding up empty barrels all morning."
GOVERNOR:
"Good thinking!"
ASSISTENT:
"Wow! You can see the entire desert from up here! Gets me every time... hmmm what is going on over there? Some sort of isolated outpost I presume..."
GOVERNOR:
"Hmmm... I'm not sure, but I would say it looks like a proper place to keep horses if i didnt know any better..."
ASSISTENT:
"My god, sir! That must be where the Centaurs positioned themselves after you demanded that they need to be isolated to the most unclimbable cliff near the village. I can even recognize the low-rise tent you gave them as a sign of friendship and mutual respect... No wonder they have been complaining about their treatment so much lately."
GOVERNOR:
"You might be right. Ask the smiths at the Dream Lodge to produce one more of those huge creepy ass statues that hardly represent anything. All desert dwellers love those, so it should make them happy again. The Dream Lodge smiths can put that sideways ghetto bridge they insisted was necessary into good use when they move the statue to the Centaur Outpost."
ASSISTENT:
"That sounds excellent, sir! May ask why do we have the Dream Lodge located at the most dangerous and narrow cliff edge there is? Doesnt it make it a bit difficult to move the completed war machines safely to the ground?"
GOVERNOR:
"Dont ask me... We were in a hurry back then and thats just how it is now... But hey! Now that the Behemoths are moving right next to the Dream Lodge, perhaps they can help hauling all the catapults and ballistas safely on the ground! Its not like they need to be doing any house chores or anything now that they cant even fit in their homes! Mwahahahaha!"
ASSISTENT:
"...."
GOVERNOR:
"Anyways... I think we need to start taking the city planning and management a bit more seriously from now on. We should get to the council meeting at the City Hall. They are probably already waiting for us..."
ASSISTENT:
"Yes.. They are... They have been waiting for the last two days..."

It was indeed very funny .
Somehow, I suddenly had to think about one of the Muppets movies (to be precise, "It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie") where Gonzo hires an artist to design a show - it's a complete disaster and Kermit and Fozzy watch it unfold in absolute horror, but the artist loves it completely. I kinda get the same feeling here with the artist they hired to do the townscreens, who might be one of the few people on this planet to actually like what he has made, while the rest of us watch it unfold in horror.

Most of the greatest artists became apprieciated after they died, so why not suggest this guy to commit suicide? He would instantly get international appraisal.
