I don't know the # for the staff but try it with the name like ARTIFACT_STAFF_OF_VEXINGS as this should be the code ingame for the Staff of the netherworld.

Quote: Guys I'm gonna give up four hours trying to get out this wonderful cheating console lead me to nothing..I read dozen of pages and tried every single trick suggested but I really can't figure out WHY for everyone seems so easy and I can't even open the console..on any of the games (HOMM5 - HOF - TOTE)!!
I got the Italian version for every one...and every one updated to the latest version..if anybody had my own issue and wanna help...I'll keep an eye on this topic
Have some nice cheatings...u lucky that u can!!
Ok, i think i can help you, first read Asheera's post and make sure you did that. I had problems too with the show_console thingy. Afaik all european keys (at least the german ones) have some funny symbol under the Escape key which looks like that '^'. It's some french accent as far as i remember my french lessons in school. In order to show this symbol (e.g. in ms word) you have to confirm this symbol somehow like with pressing the button another time or pressing 'spacebar', and this WON'T work with the console.
So try this: Change your keys to english settings, if you press the button under 'ESC' now then this symbol appears '`'...
so enter the line bind_show console '`' and make sure it is THIS symbol
hope this will work for you, as it did for me

BEHOLD! THE ANSWER TO VISTA RELATED PROBLEMS
After the 300th time trying to figure out how to get the console command working i figured it out. On vista, when you try to save the command line in the autoexec.cfg it says it can not find the path, no matter what you do. The trick around this is the use of a seperate file. Copy the autoexec.cfg to your desktop, open the file and add the command line ( the shwinge-des-todes thing) to its correct place. save it. then go back to the original location of the autoexec.cfg and delete it, then drag your newly updated file form your desktop to the old autoexec.cfg's place. it will stay there without problems and you can now pull up the console in game by the standard use of the ~. This method works with both vista and windows 7. please tell me if i have stated anything wrong or it does not work, or it does work for that matter....

cheats
Hi I just wanted to know once the commands have been put into the cfg file and autoexe etc, you go into your game and use the tilde key and bring down the command thing, why does it not comply with the commands you type in? add_army etc is there a command your meant to put in before to get it to work. Ohhhhh and does this work with heroes V gold edition version 1.5, 2.1, and I think its 3.0? Am alittle stumped as Ive played this all without cheats now I want to mess around with it alittle more. Look forward to a nicer reply and some help if its able.

Cheat Console
Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and fairly new to HOMM. My husband has been playing since he was like 12 and finally got me hooked on Heroes 5. Anyway... I was able to get the game console to show up and work on my laptop, but not on my desktop. It is the same version of Heroes, both computers are fairly new, I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. When I go into the game on the desktop, I just can't bring up the console at all. I can, however, use the CTRL + I command, so I don't know why I can use one, but the hotkey won't work. I also tried changing the hotkey, and that doesn't work either. Am I missing something??
Thanks--

Hey all-
I'm a new HOMM 5 player, and I'm having some trouble getting the cheat to work. I'm on a Mac, running HOMM5 v. 1.50 (I think the versions are a little different on mac). Anyways, I've edited my autoexec.cgf file so it looks like this:
// Startup
mainmenu
setvar dev_console_password=schwinge-des-todes
and my input.cgf file so it looks like this:
// Common section (always active)
//===========================================================================
bind show_console '`'
bind hide_interface 'CTRL' + 'I'
I did this in accordance with Curio's guide, but it's a no-go. I can't even get the console to show up.
Any help or a point in the right direction would be much appreciated!

Cheats not working
Hey I'm new to the forum but I have a question to ask, whenever I try to activate the cheat console it doesn't work. I'll put in what i need to in the notepad file but nothing happens when I go to use a cheat in the game. Does anyone know what might I be doing wrong or forgetting?

If I understand your question correctly, you make all the changes to the files, but cannot pull up the cheat console in the game.
I've installed the cheat console twice (two different machines) and have not been able to get it to work using the tilda (~) key. When I change the Notepad entry from ~ to F12, I can get it to work using the F12 key. Hope this helps.

Hey thanx for the idea, except it still doesn't work... where exactly did you put the instruction in notepad?

Quote: Hey thanx for the idea, except it still doesn't work... where exactly did you put the instruction in notepad?
Here are the instructions I followed:
Activating Ability to Cheat
To enable the console in-game, you'll first have to edit 2 text files (open them with Notepad or some better text editor - not Word!). H5, HoF and ToE each have their own files, so make sure you edit the correct ones. Applying patches will most likely reset the input.cfg file, and you'll have to make sure the hotkey is still assigned.
Unlocking the console
The console requires a specific password to be unlocked. The file in which to add it depends on your game version (GAME_FOLDER is the game's installation folder):
• GAME_FOLDER/profiles/autoexec.cfg
• GAME_FOLDER/profiles/autoexec_a1.cfg
• GAME_FOLDER/profiles/start.cfg
Paste this as the last line, after the line mainmenu:
setvar dev_console_password = schwinge-des-todes
Assigning the console's hotkey
Now, you need to bind a specific key to open the console. Here, we suggest the upper left key (above Tab, left to 1, below Escape). It has the tilde ( ` ) symbol on english keyboards. It bears another symbol in other languages, but it doesn't matter: it is the key. Alternatively, you might prefer to use another (less confusing) key, like 'F12'. Just check that it isn't used for something else.
The file to edit this time is in My Documents/My Games:
• Heroes of Might and Magic V/Profiles/YOUR_PROFILE/input.cfg
• Heroes of Might and Magic V/Hammers of Fate/Profiles/YOUR_PROFILE/input_a1.cfg
• Heroes of Might and Magic V - Tribes of the East/Profiles/YOUR_PROFILE/input_a2.cfg
Add this line in the "Common section" (in the beginning of the file):
bind show_console '`'
Again, this binds your upper left key to the console, whatever symbol it has on it.
Important: A common error when the console does not open is to edit the wrong input.cfg file: you should edit the one in your profile in "My Documents/...", NOT the one in "GAME_FOLDER/profiles/".
The only change I made was to the command between the arrows. I changed it to
bind show_console 'F12'
I typed it using the F 1 2 keys. It opens using the F12 key at the top of the keyboard.
Note the correct input.cfg to use, as repeated at the end of the above instructions.
Good luck.

I put it at the bottom of the Common Section, just below
bind confirm_action 'NUM_ENTER'
with two spaces separating it from the
