While Nathaniel checked the bodies and Feather observed the surrounding, Vorbrin, being the closest to the ground, studied the tracks. Something was responsible for the carnage around them and it would be preferable not to run into it by surprise. And of course their main task was still to track the one who helped the group to (mostly) avoid the cave-in.

Nathanial didn't let his guard down, but conveyed this helpful information to his compatriots in a quiet voice.

"These appear to be void walkers of the sort that were allied with our plane during the Void Wars, although those could be distinguished as men and women while these..." Nathanial trailed off; no use giving information that was obvious to everyone. "They functioned as guerrilla soldiers and assassins, for the most part; large armies such as this were unusual. They seemed to care little for our plane; their purpose in assisting us was to fight the armies of the Void. That," he motioned to the dead giant, "is a frost giant, though how it came to be here I do not know. And I do not know what that is," he admitted, gesturing to the six-legged creature.

"I'm going to go see what's ahead." Feather started forward without waiting for a response. She didn't want to go too far forward. She did her best to remain in view and hearing range.

While her current position wouldn't help her see too much farther around the corner, Feather would be able to see the rest of the giant and that the tunnel ahead was brighter. She would also feel that the tunnel was noticeably warmer and more humid. As well, the coppery smell of blood was much, much thicker here, which would be expected, given she was closer to the source.

((And because I forgot the spells))

With a little more study, Nathanial would be able to identify that many of the blast marks on the floors and walls were from fireballs. The impaled creature was thrown down on the spikes by a telekinesis spell, though the rest of the wounds on the beast seemed to just be from weapons. You can also identify that there was a firestorm called down, and the wounds that slew the giant came from a vortex of teeth. For the rest, you don't know what spell it was but it seems to have been a combination of a massive blast of air that threw them against the wall and wounds from a one-sided blade, straight edged. This is when you would also notice that the void walkers seem to all be unarmed... Which, from the reports, is an odd occurrence.

"Most of the damage seems to be from fire spells." Nathanial frowned as he noticed something odd. "Comrades, none of these void walkers seem to be armed." ((I check for spell component pouches, spell books, scrolls or the remains thereof...anything that could be a source of magic.))

Looking through, you find maybe three or four burnt scrolls or wands among the bodies, but for the most part the bodies have scabbards, belt loops or other weapon holders that are all empty. Where the weapons are is unknown, but it seems that for the most part, these void walkers were carrying katanas and daggers.

((Aaaand for Geny))

While you can't exactly place who the boots belonged to, you would notice that they are a very common fashion trend on the material plane, most often associated with people of authority or military might. Say, a captain, general or member of a major temple or king's elite guards. The crimson trail is incredibly easy to track, and leads to the only major path nearby. On Feather's hand map, the tunnel seems to wind about a bit, but eventually lead to an exit not too far from where you are now... so your "friend" may very well have shown you a shortcut through this tunnel system. You would know that you have not gone far enough down to be at the mountain's base just yet, but the change in pressure does give you the hint that you have gone rather far.

"Hmm... this is intriguing indeed." said Vorbrin in a low voice. "An ice giant from the material world and a track of quite material looking boots. And if that is not enough we are being led out of the mountain just as dragon Den instructed. Let us proceed, but do so with caution. We would not like to end up like our outsider friends, hmm?"

And so, bow at the ready, Vorbrin followed Feather.

"There is more, Exquisitor. It seems most of them were martially armed initially; I found the scabbards and holders for bladed weapons—katana and daggers mostly—but only the remains of a few scrolls and wands. And yet now—" Nathan gestured to the weaponless corpses mutely.

Seeing as how Vorbrin was following behind, and assuming the others would follow, Feather decided to move along. She took the possible straggler warning to heart though, and tried her best to be relatively silent and watchful. The thing she wanted to know though, was if there was an easy enough way past the giant.

The only real sound of Feather's approach is that of some light sticking from the giant's blood sticking to her boots. Finally able to peek around the corner properly, feeling the heat grow with each passing moment, Feather would know why it felt like a blast furnace here. At the end of the hallway there is a massive, shifting conflagration that just seems to radiate heat. This blast furnace is powerful enough that your face and hair almost instantly feel like they dry up, and you can tell that any bodies or fuel that were in it are charring to ash. Still, there aren't any other beings besides you in the next hallway as far as you can tell, and still no signs of where all those weapons might be.

The tracks continue down this path, the caked and dry blood looking almost black in the hellish light that inferno sheds. It's still just one set of tracks, which begs the question of why there is still no sign of a weapon discarded on the ground.

Well, it's more than obvious that the fire is magical in nature, and you are able to identify that it is from the school of evocation... but beyond that, you are not able to pin down the exact spell used. You do know that the amount of magic being fed into the flames will likely keep it going for another hour at least. Around the next corner, the blood actually seems to disappear beyond the tread marks, suggesting that maybe the carnage was over? Over the crackling of the raging inferno, you can just barely make out the sounds of a rather large battle...

"So, unless you say otherwise, I'm going to assume it won't suck me up and leave me as a pile of ash after it's through devouring me. On I go!" Feather went to get past the giant. She figured going past the legs, and around to the far wall would be safer. She wasn't sure the heat would do herself any good.

Working her way around, Feather would find that the heat was intense, somewhat scalding even, but that keeping as far away as you could kept the first degree burns to an absolute minimum. However, you would rather like a nice glass of water or two to deal with the dryness in your throat after you got past this bend. Around the corner, things are (relatively) clear, the light from our side of the tunnel shows that there are only one or two shattered skeletons in your way. Judging by their age, if they were part of the fighting then they were undead and decomposed before anything even happened. You also see that another aura of flames is coming from the other wide of the tunnel, likely from a similar pyre to the one behind you.

You all also get the distinct impression that they are being watched, though that might be more from the way the walls seem to echo back the sound of your footsteps and the crackle of flames as ominous whispers than anything else. Besides the dancing of the flames, nothing seems to be moving just yet...

The fact that there is another of these magical fire to get past is bit disheartening. She looked back to see if the others are following, but stopped upon seeing the giant. She called back to the others as best she could with her dry mouth, "Hey, does this giant have anything that could help us get past the heat? Sure, he didn't last, but maybe he was just a bit unlucky."

The giant doesn't appear to have any magical items on himself, but his clothing could be rather helpful... specifically, the massive, mammoth-padded and lightly shredded vest that he was wearing. If the party desired, they could likely salvage enough to make proper coverings for two or three members of the party, to protect their exposed skin from the blast-furnace like flames.

"Sister Feather is correct. If those flames were hot enough to fell a frost giant, we must prepare ourselves before we move on. Search the giant for anything of use to us... and find me a container to fill with water. It may be wise to dowse ourselves in it before we move on."

Not waiting for a response, Vorbrin began to carry out his own orders.

Feather moved back to the others, and lent a basic starknife to each of her companions, and took out her own special starknife to work with. "Here. Let's use these to cut up that vest." Feather took out one of her water skins and dealt with her dry mouth before going to work.

Nathanial first said a brief prayer over the dead giant.

"Departed spirit, may the Lady of Mysteries guide you safely to your final reward. Accept our apologies, and know that we do this not out of malice, but out of need, and that your sacrifices will contribute to the good of all. Lady Mystra, forgive us for this, our trespass upon the dead."

((The rest of the party will know that this sort of thing is "normal" for Nathanial when looting corpses. Insisting on a proper burial for them after the fact is also common.))

He then extracted his cookpot from his pack for use in holding water and set about seeing what the giant's carcass had that the party could use, laying salvageable items aside for distribution.
