person A = 1 min
person B = 2 min
person C = 5 min
person D = 10 min
person A and B go across taking 2 minutes.
person A goes back taking 1 minute.
person C and D go across taking 10 minutes.
person B goes back taking 2 minutes.
person A and B go back across taking 2 minutes.
2 + 10 + 1 + 2 + 2 = 17

The idea is that it's stupid to make separate trips for C and D because they take the longest. So it would make sense that they go together.

Here's a question:
3 friends Fred Jones, Sivalingham, and Tang Wen met at dinner. They all ate until there was one piece of chicken left on the serving dish. All 3 wanted the last piece. Suddenly, the lights went out and somebody screamed. When the lights came back, the piece of chicken was gone. What happened in the dark? Who screamed? Who took the chicken?

Heheh I've been asked Hritik's question once before, but it was used with politicians instead  . The answer's like this:
Tang Wen is Chinese. And the Chinese use chopsticks. Chopsticks are slower in getting the chicken, so Tang Wen didn't get the chicken.
Sivalingam is Indian. Indians use their hands. Obviously, hands are faster in getting the chicken. So, Sivalingam was the 1 who took the chicken.
Fred is a Brit, who uses a fork and knife. In the dark, he couldn't see Siva's hand, and accidentally poked Siva's hand with the fork when the 3 were trying to get the chicken.
So, it was Sivalingam who took the chicken and screamed in pain after Fred poked his hand.
