I love it when someone rushes in and says a cliche
All groups are different and you can't classify them in strict cathegories. Just try to evaluate each one, without any genre prejudices.
PS: SOAD are sooo not nu-metal. Same for most of the bands you're discussing. Sometimes cliches are perfectly right.

I just wish they had found another name for it. Nu-metal makes you think about heavy metal, and they are totaly different things. We should be able to separate real metalists from those who listen to this nu-metal. Call them what you want, thay are NOT rockers.

Nirvana are one of the worst bands ever. I really hate their music. GNR beats them by a country mile. I like the song of theirs "sweet child of mine" becuase i can play it all on the guitar. The band that i think kicks GNR's **** is The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Jimi Hemdrix is the best guitarist that ever lived and it is a real shame that he passed away so young.

Cobain is a musical genius
Nirvana is better than Guns n Roses in every way. They have much more depth than GNR in that the could play fast loud songs yet slow it down and play a successful acoustic set, which GNR could not. GNR has less than 10 songs that are considered by any standards to be worthy of remembering where Nirvana created at least that many on every one of their records. The main argument I can make for Nirvana over most any band in the last 25 years is three of the most reknown musical icons have commented positively on them: Paul McCaurtney, Pete Townshend, and Bob Dylan. They all stated they hold them in higher regards then any other band in the past few decades and the former Beatle even stated that he would have joined Nirvana over any other band in history. GNR will be played at middle school wrestling matches for a long time, but Nirvana will come to be remembered as musical legends.

I still don't understand why are you fighting for this!
It so simple. These are the rock legends. While some will like Nirvana, the others will say GNR. You can discuss somebody's taste for music, art and literature.
(I really hope you got it and will be talking about something else. For the start i'll propose an ideea.)

It's quite easy to say they have less than 10 good songs but that Nirvana have a lot more. If you would be so kind as to enlighten me and tell me wich are those songs, I would really appreciate it. Of course, I can give you 10 GNR songs anytime, with a detailed analisys of every instrument, vocal part, lyrics, etc. Just ask...Then we'll see who is the musical genius.
And by the way, the thread was meant to decide between two bands, and arguing about who is better and reaching a conclusion is the point.

Time will tell
Nirvana vs. Guns and Roses shouldn't even be a comparison. GNR were a part of a dying breed of materialistic metal rockers. There music was commercialized and completely unoriginal. Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, was able to overcome this materialistic phase and finally bring true rock music back. Nirvana meant the end of GNR because, yes, they were a pathetic breed of 80's metal rockers hoping to hold on for a few more minutes of fame. I love Slash, don't get me wrong, but I just don't think you guys realize that GNR will not be very notable in the future while Kurt Cobain will be filed with legends like Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and other musical genius. Let your vendetta against the Seattle Grunge scene go and realize the powerful legacy that Nirvana has left.

NIRVANA was a grunge band and to be more specific the band who invented grunge and to much more specific KURT COBAIN invented grunge.
Now about the comparison u write (a bit difficult if u consider that they were in different music fields)one i have to say.
1st rock(or whatever)band is NIRVANA
2nd none
3rd none
.
.
.
.
89th guns n' roses
and goes on

tsk tsk Homam, any real student of grunge will tell you that it's The Melvins who invented grunge. Even Cobain himself said so.

Yeah, and if he hadn't blown his freaking head off with a shotgun, grunge would still be alive. Please name one AWESOME grunge band besides Nirvana that exists now.
Btw comparing Nirvana and Guns&Roses is like comparing cows and mushrooms...

I usually avoid comparing different rock/grunge/metal bands to each other. I'd never be able to make up my mind regarding who's best, and it just seems pointless to me. The genres are often very different from each other, and individual artists have their own unique talents and quirks in their work. That's a rather general outlook on things, but I appreciate different groups for different reasons and that's all I really care about.
