Starting Options

In previous Heroes games, your starting options have been rather limited for single scenarios. You pick the Computer AI level which also determines starting resources for all players and then you get maybe a few other things to pick (been a while since I played H4 so I forgot what the starting options were there; maybe they were better). I think it would be nice for the "standard" maps to have more starting options. I am intentionally not discussing non-standard maps or maps with heavy scripting as this suggestion is less relevant there.

For instance, they could break up the starting options like this:
-Computer AI (also determines computer starting resources)
-Player Starting Resources (in multiplayer perhaps each player can pick this independently, essentially taking the place of the handicap)
-Starting town size (non-customized towns start off with more buildings built the higher this is set. eg. could have options for No Buildings/ Standard Towns/ Developed Towns)
-Starting Hero Level (I'll just mention this one... I don't really like it though. May or may not apply to all unrecruited heroes)

Of course there are other ways this could be done, and many other things that could be added to this list. Also certain kinds of restrictions could also be picked this way (like banning certain buildings, artifacts, spells, etc), but that is pushing it when it comes to inundating the player with too many options.

As I said before, this is intended for "standard" maps where there is little to no scripting. How to handle non-standard maps, I think, is a different topic. Although if that is what everyone wants to talk about we can discuss it here.

So what do you guys think? Too complicated? Frivolous? Acceptable?

I think it's a good idea to let the player opt for as many as reasonable choices can handle. I guess we'll always have the AI choice, so moving past that it would be nice to customize your hero and your town a little before starting.
I think that the pallette of choice for heroes in H3 was suficient, with about 2 dozens of heroes with special skills (some repeating, however) so I would be more than happy to see a come back of that choice. On the other hand, I play heroes to build a hero of my own, so I want to start with level one hero. I also don't like to start with already build structures (let's say up to level 3-4 dwellings) or already purchased army in the castle. But I don't protest if an option would be included - this is rather redundant since it works pretty much like the difficulty level (if you have more resources, then automatically it means you build more). So too many options checked might mean less fun, but that's up to each one to consider.
My idea would be for example to start with heroes with 2 secondary skills, and you could choose them yourself, instead of being built-in. Then, I could pick the hero with the nicest face, the greatest biography and the most usefull skills...

All I need (or rather dont need) is a lack of check-options like the "fog of war", "movable guards" etc. It makes everyone play according to different standards, which significantly change playing style. Almost to the point of getting 2 diff games.
