@ Rychenroller.... I do have to agree with you now.  At first glance in general H5 reminded me of H3. They regressed back to the 7 town creatures, with one upgrade... they regressed back to shooters no longer need line of site, they can shoot thru solid objects like in H3.  Alot of the adventure map buildings are same concept.  Regressed away from creature movement back to chaining creatures. Regressed back to hit and run possible. ( Karim is about to use a mini hit and run agasint me in our game )

Now to the part where I agree this game has enough different about it to not be considered a clone.

Summon Creatures spell IMO takes a ton of strategy and planning outta game. I loved that part of chaining. Having to get your troops out deep into the field should be a challenge...not just POOF they are half way accross map with snap of finger.

Initiative has great concept and potential...but as it is like angelito says, my creature could potentially get 3 turns before my opponent gets a turn. Wow does the word " UNBALANCED " come to mind. Not sure how that is any different then using mass haste in H3 and killing half your opponents army before they get a turn.  Its same thing lol.

Timer continuing to run while in battle!!! OMG that sucks! Instead of being able to have a great battle and minimize some serious losses, you are forced to rush thru a battle, OR sacrifce 3/4 of a days movement cuase when you exit battle your turn is over.

I could go on... but need to finish a couple more games.

After finally looking at this game it seems to me that it was not so much an attempt to make a unique video game that broke new ground and evolved out of the heroes genre that came before it as it was an attempt to settle a feud between the homm3 and homm4 players in the heroes community. I was looking for new concepts in this game that would redefine the boundaries of what heroes was all about though..and i have to tell you i didnt find them in this game.

Like Jb said though, heroes3 was perfected by a long evolution of modifications from the original. Except that HOMM3 was a stand alone great game despite its warts when it hit the market whereas HOMM5 goes backward...no random generator..no map editor..etc etc..

But for the serious HOMM3 gamer if you bought the whole thing..ROE ARM blade and SOD you payed like 130-150 bucks for the whole thing. Im convinced that UBIs main intention was and is making money off this thing not giving people a perfect masterpiece of a game for 50 bucks. So you see..its all about money,...isnt it sad? Which also brings up the ethical argument of whether they owe you a better game in the form of a patch(no additional charge) or they make Heroes5 "the new improved version" and charge you for it.

I remember though when i got Heroes 3 it said somewhere in the manual "we really enjoyed making and playing this game and we hope you enjoy it just as much as we did"..or words to that effect. The lesson is this...Gamers make good games...programmers dont.

timers running in battle is my favorite change from heroes 3 about this game.  no more waiting for your opponent to take 1 hour turns and as long as you set the timer.   also you can stop the amount of chaining done.   i allways try to do my builds first before any fights to eliminate the chance of running out of time and not getting my build done.

But with Heroes 3 I think the online community made the game what it is remembered as. When everyone became bored of single player theyd come online and meet some cool players and play some fun new maps and have hours of fun.

In fact I see a lot of similarities between Heroes 3 and Heroes 5. Heroes 3 took several critical patches to get to the game we all remember. I think if Nival/Ubisoft put in the effort to improve Heroes 5 it will be very comparable to Heroes 3.

Also lets not forget the Zone was a great place to develop an online 'community'.  H4 and H5 do not have this.

living in the past...

I jsut think that the people who still like H3 over H5 and H4 are people who like to live in the past, and relive the past....not a good idea in life.

The reason i can justify this is that I am saying that those who think H3 is the best game ever compared to all other Heroes franchises are people who associate H3 with the "good old days". It's not the game per say that is the best, but the memories attached to it. Let them go, memories are memories.

If you were to take a neutral person who never tried the Heroes franchise, and ask that person to play all of em in depth, there is no way in the world that H3 would be the best.

Oh man, Heroes III, straight up! I played some of that “Heroes V” Business, yeah, I did… and it filled my heart with rage. Then again, Heroes IV is just starting to appeal to me now and I bought it on release day. Call me retro, but it takes a long time for me to appreciate new things. Heroes III-IV has everything I need… maybe in a few patches and expansions Heroes V will too.

This thread is probably outdated and lost, but I still want to make some clarifications.
Was the line of sight feature that good? It's essentially the same as a strike and return with no retaliation except that here the unit runs only in straight lines.
The gameplay of H5 is not bad at all. I should say it's better than H3. It doesn't matter much how many new features are introduced, what matters is the gameplay. H5 was actually the mix of the good parts of H3 and H4. Do not forget that the complete game also includes TotE. H5 was better as it required much more planning and strategy. I admit I do miss the hero classes but that is more than made up for by the 2-upgrade system.
I don't understand why people neglect the down side of H3. The towns were not actually balanced that well. Some towns were good against other factions. I don't notice this in H5.
H7 is coming up, It has all the good elements of H5 and the mssing elements of H3 (hero classes, logistics) but it also omitted the initiative system. They also say that some towns can defeat other towns easily. But still, the advantage is little and the other town can fight back but only with a modified strategy. Interesting?!

As topic is now open to discuss let me tell about my opionion about this 2 games.

Heroes 3:
Simple Graphic , 2D View, HD Mod, 9 factions, overpowered skills and spells, unbalanced creatures(v. lords, angels, phoenix), good music, Sandro

Heroes 5:
Skill System(best in the series), 8 uniqal races(from humans to orcs), camera angle should be more H6/H3 like, caravans, campaigns(only gameplay not storyline(except Raelag part and Markal/Arantir)), balanced town build, hero support units in meelee or spells, initiative(battles are not boring)

I was so close several times to buy Heroes 3 HD but i know good enough UBI. They care for gain easy money and don't care for quality and real support his loyal customers. Its why i decide to hold till game out on torrents and try it first. I spend like 1h and after it drop game. Im not really disappointed how talk rest "fans" because its was posted from begin its only H3, not expansions so we get only it. Problem is H3 is not really good game if you don't have full version with all expansions and its why im not interest to play or pay for only it. When UBI do full port game include all expansions + bug fix original game i will buy it.

About h7 i have my hopes. H6 was total disappoint. Very bad graphic, not working  multi and limit resources made it so simple in strategy.

Most important improvement from H5 over h3 was sim turns. I want to see it in h7 and if UBI ever release full HD h3 its must be in new version too.

I had a lot of homm players contact me with excitement about the 'HD' version of this game, but it didn't make much sense to me to buy & play this game with basically slightly sharper graphics?  Waiting for homm7.
