"The alternative for haven will not be the renegades."

EDIT: Representative from Nival denied the part about haven's alternative upgrades being completely new, so wee will most likely see Renegades as the alternative upgrade for haven.

No - we have confirmed that Haven alternative units will not be Renegades (thank you, Nival!). Thus, the number 49 would refer to 7 x 7 units from excisting factions, whereas the 21 units from the new faction (+ possible Neutrals) are excluded from this number.

I understood that Nival stated that there will NOT be other alternative upgrades for Haven, apart from the Renagates.

We have 21 * 8 = 168 creatures in the towns + 9 neutrals which already gives 177. The Ubisoft announcement said 170+ creatures. If there would be another 7 creatures, apart from the renegates we would have had more than 180 creatures and it is common sense that the announcement would have been with 180+ creatures.

I see everyone is spreading his ideas and feelings here. Which is fine.
However, I'd like you to keep a few things in mind:
- any info that wasn't in an official Ubi/Nival announcement is rumor only. Some could be consistent (Nival representatives have given inside info in forums), some can be complete bullsnow as well (some people like to pass their own assumptions as truth - it happens).

- whatever the current state of the game, there is still time until the fall release. Things can change (like names, as Alcibiades pointed out), and Ubi has to build up the expectations until release. That's two good reasons not to rush infos. I know we would like to know everything right now, but give it time, respect the developers work.
If too much info is out now, either it's pure speculation passed as facts (bad!!), either it's leaked, and it will piss off the devs. Imagine preparing a good surprise and having it leaked months before it's ready...

About the questions raised here:
- the real new thing in the suggested line-up is the Cyclops as level 7. At first, we thought the Pao-Kai would be the level 7. If this is confirmed, it would show that Nival can part from the all-powerful dragon approach, which is a good thing: it gives us more diversity, and of course the return of the Cyclops.
Personally, I like the fact that they are consistent in the M&M universe (the new one). It makes much more sense to me to use Dark Messiah creatures than creatures from older Heroes. That means Cyclops and Pao-Kais, not Behemoths. By the way, Cyclops have been in all previous Heroes (lvl7 in H1-2, lvl 6 in H3, lvl 3 out of 4 in H4), while Behemoths have only been in H3 (lvl7) and H4 (lvl 4). You can also notice that they were always stronger than Cyclops. Nival has got to leave room for modders to create lvl8 creatures, haven't they?

- The rest of the lineup is too imprecise to base any conclusion on it. The centaur for example: it's obviously not the typical Harry Potter forest Centaur, so obviously we will have explanations in the M&M history as to where they come from. They have only been level 1 creatures before, melee and shooters (and both in H4). On the other hand, they seem to be a large creature, and we currently have no large creature below level 3.

- the ideas about goblins serving as cannon fodder, sacrifices and being understandably subject to changing sides are really innovative. Again, they will need to be confirmed, but there is a true potential for fun here.

- about the no-magic approach: there's indeed a risk of wasting spell power, knowledge and the 6 magic-related skills. However, remember that Knowledge is already used for Ballista power, or mini-artifacts creation by Wizards. Mana is used by Demon Lord's Hellfire to boost its army damage. So Barbarians can have new uses as well of these attributes. Magic-related abilities can add magic protection/resistance, hinder the use of magic by enemies, or give them new bonuses (think Guardian Angel, Storm Wind, Soulfire, haunted Mines...).

Acheval posted clarifications about "standalone" and "alternative uppgrade":
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?m=4241099155&a=tpc&f=1851065692

Basically, ToE will contain all factions (including dwarves), but not the maps and campaigns of previous versions. And it will be possible to "recruit both the new and classic upgrades in the same town".

There will still be seven creatures max you can bring with you, and you won't be able to deploy 7 large creatures in combat anyway. So the strategic element is still there big time. If you mix the 2 kind of upgrades in your army, you will have more variety, but less numbers, so I think you will have to make a choice, based on resources (the 2 lvl 7 upgrades might have different resource costs - see the fallen angel), and your opponent's strength and weaknesses.

Contrarily to H4, you'll be able to change strategy more easily, but as Elvin says, changing strategy will come at a price as your stacks won't grow as much. Basically, I'm really pleased that you don't have to make a definite per town choice. That was very frustrating in H4, especially since you would even it out with a number of towns anyway.

Players can go by the feet of the powerful necromanser of Arantir, who exposed the plot of the sovereign of demons and who defied our own kinsmen, they learn the secret of prophecy about the advent into this peace of the dark of the Messiah and will meet with the new race of the orgs - inhabitants of the boundless East plains of Ranaar."

Not the new druid though!  I want that as my Avatar!

Also: I have guesses about the new abilities:
Treant Union: Makes the Treant Very happy to raise morale
Agility: Chance of being missed when attacked
Force Arrow: Arrow imbued by the power of the force.  It chokes the enemies!!!
Bond of Light: Binds two units together.  Used mainly on the Dryad and the Treant.
Rainbow Breath: Makes attacked creatures gay, and unable to attack units of the same gender!

These are alternate choices of upgraded creatures with different powers and capabilities, not an extra tier of more powerful creatures. Players will be able to recruit both the new and classic upgrades in the same town.

There's something we should keep in mind here: the story and characters have been over-simplified. All units in one faction share the same set of values and beliefs. There is good and there is bad, not much in-between. And almost all characters are completely representative of their faction.

There have been dissensions among factions, mostly in HoF, which started to make things more interesting already. But they were mainly the opposition between the good (true spirit of the faction), and the bad (perverted by the demons). That's Raelag/Ylaya vs Clan Soulscar and Freyda/Duncan vs Biara [Isabel]. The last example of in-faction fight is Wulfstan vs Rolf, which is the only one not plotted by the demons. But it's again a bad ambition-driven Rolf against the good and pure (although easy-on-the-bottle) Wulfstan. King Tolghar here is a more interesting character, even if his weakness finally leads him to his end.

Now, at the unit level, why should everything be so simple? Why should all Haven swordsman share that defensive stance, and never be a little more vindicative? Again, the classic Haven line-up (rebels) and the Renegades have been presented with a simplified global will and belief. The Renegades have kept their faith in Elrath, wherever it leads them. The classic Haven troops have moved away from the fanatism, because they rejected the method. But they both have the same goal: fight the demons. The civil war is mostly the result of the instrumentalization by Biara of these differences, not an intrinsic incompatibility, or it would have happened already in history. If they were united in the past, and since they share the same goal in reality, why wouldn't they fight alongside each other once again, should Biara's treachery be revealed, or a greater threat arise?

I hope I make sense here. Basically, I'm seeing these new line-ups (and the Renegades in HoF), as the acknowledgment of the factions underlying beliefs complexity, that were hidden until now due over-simplification. Not as the introduction of new beliefs, that would necessarily lead to civil unrest.

Edited by Geny at 16:40, 18 May 2007.

Will be translated as soon as I finish reading it. Wait for the edit.

-We'll finally know where did the Dark Messiah come from. TotE are in fact the prehistory (is it a word in English?) of DM.

-The tale of TotE will tell how ended the resistance against Biara, how the civil war in the Empire came to an end and under what circumstances did the Dark Messiah come to the world. There will be some familiar characters: Isabel, Freida, Duncan, Wolfstan, Zehir. Also there will be some pleasant surprises and unexpected meetings. The rest will be revealed only when the game is released.

-Q:Who amongst the new heroes is the more colourful and why?
A:There will be many interesting characters. You'll meet a few new Barbarian heroes who will take part in fighting with humans and resisting the demons, using their unique skills. Also Zehir from the Academy town will make an appearance and the representing "face" of the necromancers will be ... the main villain of Dark Messiah - Alantir.

-Q:Why did you choose the orcs as the new race?
A:Firstly, because of the fans - the orcs were always a part of HoMM and we received questions like "Where are the barbarians?!". Secondly, in TotE a barbarian hero appears and the best faction for him are the orcs. Thirdly, according to the history of Ashan, the orcs hate the demons and will try to destroy them at any opportunity. Therefore, they are the ones who can play the vital role in the struggle with Biara.

-The history of the orcs began long before the game storyline... (you know story - they were created by wizards, helped in the war, rebelled and ran away to Ranaar).

-We decided to make the orcs a bit different from their traditional descriptions. The castle is a mix of standart and unique buildings and their castle will probably be the most beatiful architecture structure.

-Q:What can the barbarian hero do against the magic users if he doesn't use magic?
A:It is true - the barbarian prefers to attack rather than defend; he declines the use of magic and despises it. One of his unique skills is the skill to "damage" enemy spells - the higher that skill will be, the weaker the enemy's attacks will be. He will also have six warcries, whose effectiveness will be equal to regular spells.

-orc line-up: goblins, centaurs, orcs-warriors, female-shamans, chieftains, wyverns and cyclopes. Goblins - sneaky, cowardly and incredibly stupid, attacking in packs and trying to escape from the battlefield at the slightest hint of danger. Centaurs - half-men, half-horses who strike their enemies from afar. Orc-warriors - sturdy infantry who are the backbone of the army.
Shamans - the only spellcasters among the orcs who are using the traditional spells haste and slow and if needed can sacrifice goblins to refill their mana. The most big and powerfull orcs become chieftains - huge with a two-handed axe. Wyverns - big flying lizards. Cyclops - the only creatures who are able to damage the city walls in a siege.
All the orcs' troops have a unique ability: submitting to their bloodthirst they become fiercer and more aggressive. But the most important point - the more active they are in the battle the better they fight.

-The rest of the faction will also undergo some changes. Theyre will be more balanced, and there will be alternative upgrades - 7 new units for each faction.

-All the upgrades are equal in power, but are better suited to deal with different tasks. They are introduced to add a new tactical element and give the players more freedom.

-There will be new artifacts, some of them will work based on new principles. All of them will be available for all the races.

-There will be 3 new campaings. The story of orcs will tell about the conseqences of actions of the past: after living for 5 centuries in the harsh envirement of the north the orcs are finally strong enough to expand their territory and get vengeance against the humans. There will also be an Academy campaign with Zehir, and A Necro campaign with Alantir - Dark Messiah's main nemesis.

-Some techncical things, nothing interesting or new.

-Q:If this expansion is really the last one, how long will you support the game with the release of new patches, maps and othr details?
A:As long as it takes. We're not going to abandon the game.

The End
