So, you want to win an Oscar

I figured that with the Oscars coming up very soon and even if you're like me and only care about the actresses' fashions I thought I might bring this topic up for those aspiring film stars, directors and the like so that they can get some pointers on how they can get an Oscar.

While I might not be interested in the films that get awarded Oscar nominations, I thought there are a few of you here that would, so here are a few tips on getting one.

Big budgets RARELY equal Oscar potential
Most big budget films are often not rated highly with film critics, those individuals who help provide the nominations for the awards. Sometimes, there are a few exceptions. Remember the LOTR trilogy? Remember Titanic? They had huge budgets, took a lot of money at the cinemas the world over and yet they swamped the Oscars with wins all over. Despite this fact, awards are usually given to lower-budget films that hardly get cinema time at all.

The Oscars prefer some genres to others
Why do you never see brainless actioners, heavy-hearted comedies and horror films at the Oscars? It's because they end up at the Razzies. Critics prefer light-hearted comedies and dramatic movies to other genres. Animated films still get nods, however, except only in an entirely different category.

Dealing with controversial subjects
A lot of people think that dealing with more subjects(racism, sexism, homosexuality, the brutality of war, underage pregnancy, serial killers and criminals etc.) would harm your chances of critical acclaim but if done right it will do otherwise. A lot of film directors have not gone over the top with these subjects yet let others relate. It's these latter cases that helps you get an Oscar.

Playing against type
A lot of film stars are criticized for playing the same type of character in a film, so going against type often improves their credibility as a film star, and also gaining them a nomination. Sometimes playing a minority or an evil person will boost your star status.

The Golden Globes as an Oscars indicator
Many Golden Globe winners in the film industry are often also Oscar winners, and this is a trend that will never cease as long as the film industry is alive.

Previous Oscar experience.
If you've previously won an Oscar than you'll won't always have that curse that plagues those who'll keep playing with type. Remember Tom Hanks? He won two in a row and could possibly add another one to his trophy cabinet.

So there you go. Just follow those steps and you'll get gold in no time.

This is something that directors tend to abuse these days. Apoclypto comes to min when I say this. A movie that had potential, but unfortunately, Mel Gibson doesn't appear to understand that full view direct shots of violence, no matter how good they depict reality, are not artistic. Many directors nowdays belive that making a movie be 'real' makes it a good movie. Yes, real life has violence and drama. That does not mean I actually wanna go to the theatre and see a guy's skull bashed in for 10 minutes just so I can see how bad street wars and gangs are.

What I'm trying to say is that absolutely uncensored shots of violence/gay intercourse/ what not do not make a good movie. The story behind such thing and the tasteful presentation of such things is what makes a controversial themed movie good.

Personally I can't understand why the following movies won the best movie award
Shakespear in love(1998)
The Departed (2006)

Also other good movies won the prize but in the same year there were way better movies
