This ought to be exiting Sarah thought as she watched the two Pokemons prepare for the fight. It was quite some time since she had a battle like this with another trainer.

Stacey awakens halfway through the night. She had a dream. One a little disturbing, however she can not seem to recall what it was about. She attempts to return to slumber, but fails all together. So, she rises, and heads out. She tries for quietness, to not wake Mona up, but fails in that too, as Mona, wiping away the sleep, hops up to follow.

They both head out of the pokemon center, over to the pond she sat by a several days back, and to the spot Mona joined Stacey that day. Stacey sat at that spot, Mona joining at her side.

"We've been through a lot since we have been together. Good and bad. I'm glad to have had you and the others along. You all have helped us get through it."

Mona responded with a simple, "Gloom."

Stacey looked over. "I'm sure there's to be some more bad coming along. That Bandra just doesn't quit. Are you ready?"

"Gloom!" Mona responds, in a slightly more excitable tone.

Mina:

Mina pressed deeper into the cave, holding her makeshift torch above her head and keeping Houndour at her side. She kept the rest of her Pokemon in their balls for now—Pidgey at least didn’t like caves, and Houndour could fend off any hostile Rock Pokemon with Rock Smash, since she didn’t have Oodramer with her.

Eventually she came to a wider chamber; its floor was a rough donut shape with water-cut ‘steps’ of stone leading down into the dark.

“Well?” Mina asked of her Fire pup. His ears perked; his expression suggested he wasn’t sure what she was asking. Mina shrugged. “I guess we go down then.”

Watermarks on the walls and a coating of salt water that came up to Mina’s ankles suggested that this portion would be under fairly deep water when the tide came in. (Houndour liked it even less, making an unhappy whining sound as the water soaked his paws.)

Not much farther in they came to a rough stone wall that was almost vertical. A gaping stretch of darkness at the top told Mina the cavern continued on above her. The Johto trainer recalled Houndour with a quick thanks for his patience; there was no way for him to get her up there, and no reason he should have to stand around in the wet for as long as it would take her to find a way up.

I don’t have any rope, she thought to herself. If she could Teleport without fear of detection she could have Natu take her to the top in a heartbeat. She’d also heard of an HM that taught Pokemon how to climb, but that wasn’t an option either.

Maybe I can climb it myself? Mina made a tentative attempt, but her by now sloshing-wet shoes were slippery on the rock, and her Slashpeak injuries meant she couldn’t depend on her arms either.

What have I got in my pack? Mina stuffed the impromptu torch in a divot in the stone so she could dig around in her pack, but found nothing useful for the present situation—just Berries, various medicines, and some Pokeballs. She half-considered trying to hook the old Rod onto the top like a grappling hook and reeling herself up, but figured she was more than likely to snap the line and do herself serious damage that way. Then she eyed her torch in its bracket and got an idea.

She called out Pikachu; it might make the Electric type feel useful and besides, she wasn’t going to mind the wet as much as Houndour or Sandshrew would. The little yellow Pokemon appeared, looking up at her trainer unhappily and letting out a sad-sounding “chu.”

“Hello my dear,” Mina crouched down as best she could without getting even more soaked. “I need your help getting up this wall.” A black tipped ear flicked at this, and Pikachu let out a more interested “chu?” “If I hold you up, could you Rock Smash some handholds for me please?” The wall wasn’t much higher that Mina’s head, fortunately, or this wouldn’t even stand a chance of working. It was still going to be tricky, and this probably wasn’t the most efficient way of going about it, but it was better than turning around and giving up. Pikachu seemed to think so as well, as she considered the question before giving a more determined-sounding “chu!” and jumping into Mina’s arms.

Luckily she didn’t need many handholds. Mina still had to replace her torch at the top (not being able to carry it and climb at the same time) and she wasn’t entirely certain what she’d have done if she’d had to get her Pokemon up without the simple step of recalling Pikachu to her Pokeball. She’d also rubbed painfully against her ribs, and was not looking forward to the climb back down. But she was up.

She continued on deeper into the complex, calling out Houndour for protection again. Not much farther in, she discovered a pit in the floor with something that glittered faintly at the bottom. She edged around, trying to find an easy way down—naturally, there wasn’t one. She raised her torch above her head (trying to see if whatever-it-was was worth going down there) and was rewarded with the sight of a patch of glittering salt like the old man had shown her—

—and a trio of wild Zubat decided they didn’t like that, swooping down to attack the unwanted light.

Wild Zubat appeared!

Zubat 1: 50/50
Zubat 2: 52/52
Zubat 3: 43/43

Mina let out an exclamation that was nearly a squawk and called out Pikachu again, motioning for Houndour to join the battle as well. These were Flying types, and Pikachu should do well (she hoped) but three-to-one odds were not something she cared to leave her littlest to without good reason. She pulled out her Pokedex belatedly and scanned them; none of the three seemed to be a severe danger to her Pokemon so far as experience went.

“All right Thundershock that one Pikachu! Houndour,” Mina considered her options for a moment “Ember on that one!”

Houndour uses Ember! ((Roll = 25))
Zubat is hit for 24 damage!

Pikachu uses Thundershock! ((Roll = 10))

Zubat is hit for 42 damage!

Mina was pleased to note that both her Pokemon were faster than any of the wild Pokemon they were currently facing.

Zubat 2 uses Wing Attack!
Houndour is hit for 20 damage!

Zubat 1 uses Supersonic! ((Roll = 36))
Houndour is confused!

She was less than pleased to see the effect the Zubat’s noise had on her dog however.

Drat. “Houndour, snap out of it!”

((Paralysis roll = 40))
Zubat 3 uses Astonish!
Pikachu is hit for 7 damage! ((…))

((Houndour: 40/60 (confused)
Pikachu: 43/50

Zubat 1: 50/50
Zubat 2: 28/52
Zubat 3: 1/43 (Paralyzed)))

“Houndour, try a Bite on that one! Pikachu, finish that one off with Thundershock!” Hopefully the paralyzed one would be too incapacitated to attack.

((Roll = 32 – still confused))
Houndour is confused!
((Roll = 39))
Houndour uses Bite! ((Roll = 72))
Zubat 1 is hit for 40 damage!

Mina berated herself for not calling for that attack in the first place.

Pikachu uses Thundershock! ((Roll = 45))
It’s super effective!
Zubat  2 is hit for 31 damage!
Zubat 2 faints!

The little blue bat crumpled and fell out of the air to impact the sandy cave floor. Mina could smell it smoking lightly. “Good job, Pikachu!” she called, privately worried they’d done the Zubat serious harm—but they had attacked first.

Zubat 2 uses Astonish!
It’s not very effective…
Houndour is hit for 4 damage!

Zubat 3 uses Leech Life!
Pikachu is hit for 5 damage!
Zubat 3 regains 2 HP!

About then the Zubat seemed to realize that they were outmatched, as the remaining two sped off. Pikachu chased after them a short distance with her cheeks sparking; Houndour managed to shake off the confusion at last and sat down in the sand with a happy bark—his tail was wagging.

“Great job, guys!” Mina congratulated.

((Houndour: 36/60 (confused)

Mina:

After a quick Potion application to both Pikachu and Houndour, Mina continued on. ((-2 Potions)) Not without backward glances at both the fallen Zubat and the pit containing the salt, but there was little she could do about either at the moment.

Careful investigation of this part of the cave revealed two un-explored exits; one Mina dismissed temporarily, as that one had another steep drop like the one she’d had to climb to get in in the first place, and she wasn’t eager to do that again just yet. The other was a choke point that opened into a wider cavern, so Mina took that route.

She was immediately faced with another branched path: to her right, the cavern extended far enough that the makeshift torch didn’t illuminate the far wall. To her left was a side passage. And immediately in front of her was a spot where fallen rock mostly blocked a third passage; Mina guessed a solid Rock Smash could break through, though it was too tight to squeeze through otherwise.

Mina considered her options; she really needed some way of marking her passage or she was going to get terribly lost down here. At last she decided on the left, figuring she could use the old labyrinth trick of following a wall to get out if she needed to.

It proved to be a short passage, with another cliff-like ledge at the end. There might be something at the top, but short of another awkward and painful climb she wasn’t going to find out. She frowned, frustrated, when an idea occurred; she pulled Pidgey’s Pokeball off her belt and tentatively called him out. On his appearance the little bird immediately slicked his feathers down, not liking the enclosed space and lack of light at all.

“Pidgey, will you check on top of this ledge for me? See if there’s anything up there?”

The brown-and-cream Flying type nodded nervously and fluttered up onto the ledge out of sight. Mina held up her replacement torch so he could hopefully see better. After a moment, Mina heard a variety of odd scrapping sounds—claws and various other materials on stone. Houndour’s ears quirked, listening.

“Pidgey, are you okay?” It would, she reflected, be just her luck to have a hostile Pokemon nesting up there, and she couldn’t see well enough to aim the Pokeball and call him back if he were in trouble.

But her starter gave a (somewhat nervous) coo in response and the scraping sounds continued, coming closer. Then one after the other rained down some old mining equipment: a pick, a hammer, and an old tool belt to hold them in, the former rusted, the latter worn and all of it salt-encrusted. And in one pocket of the belt was a lump of glittering salt! Mina wondered briefly if someone was coming back for it all, but the clearly neglected state of it decided her; if they were that careless with their possessions they probably wouldn’t miss it. (The thought that the previous owner might have been brutally murdered by Bandra Mina determinably suppressed.)

Pidgey peeked over the edge and cooed questioningly at her.

“You did great my dear. Now return!” Mina called him back to the security of his ball. That makes two lumps of salt, assuming I can get at that first patch…

But having used Pidgey to check out this part of the cavern, it occurred to her that the salt might not be so inaccessible after all. Mina made her way hastily back to the first patch (the Zubat had vanished) and called out Pikachu—Sandshrew might have been a better choice, but Mina hadn’t forgotten the Ground types forced to mine for Bandra at Slashpeak, and didn’t want to remind her.

“Pikachu, I have a plan. We need to get that salt down there” Mina lifted the torch a little higher and pointed out the patch “so I’m going to call you out down there. I want you to chip it loose and hang onto it. Then I’ll call you back. That way none of us have to climb up the rock walls. Is that okay?”

Her Electric type listened with interest. “Pika!” And gave her a thumbs up.

“Awesome. Hang on,” Mina called her Pokemon back, then sent her out again at the bottom of the pit. Mina held up the torch so her littlest could see, then called her back again once Pikachu had pried a piece loose.

Mina then called her out a third time, this time to store the salt with the other lump and congratulate her Pokemon on a job well done.

“Want to try that ledge over there?” she asked her youngest, motioning to the other path she’d passed over because of a climb.

Pikachu chu’d enthusiastically—this was easier than the ‘fetch’ training Mina had been giving her—and Houndour whined. Mina took a guess at the meaning. “Sorry my dear, but you don’t have hands.” He whined again. “If there’s salt down there you won’t be able to pick it up without eating it. Besides, I need you to scare off any more Zubat that show up.”

Houndour subsided at that and the three set off for the other passage to repeat the process. Mina called out Pikachu on the lower floor (another one that was coated with water and looked like it flooded at high tide). This one went out of sight of her torch.

“Don’t go too far Pikachu; if you can’t find anything, just come back and we’ll look somewhere else.”

The Electric type nodded and scampered into the dark.

But not long after that Mina heard a very panicked cry: “Piiiikaaa!”

Pikachu came darting back into the torchlight, something solid between her teeth. Behind her came a scuttling sound. A bright red crustacean waddled sideways into view; Mina recognized it as a Krabby.

Krabby: 46/46

“Pikachu! That’s a Water type! Thundershock it!”

Pikachu spun to a halt at the order and her cheeks began to spark. Houndour was barking warningly at the Krabby, but Mina held him back with a stern warning of “Water type! No.

“Piiikaa chuuu!”

Krabby is hit for 39 damage!
It’s super effective!

The Krabby retaliated with a Bubblebeam ((16 damage)) but was sent packing when Pikachu followed up with another Thundershock, scuttling back into the darkness.

Well that was unpleasant. Aloud Mina remarked, “Are you all right sweetie?”

Pikachu nodded with an affirmative added in Pokespeak, then held up what she’d found: it was one of the shells the old man had shown her.

“Great job my dear! Hold on and I’ll bring you up.”

Mina repeated the recall-and-call-out maneuver and added the shell to her pack, grabbing another Potion to tend to Pikachu. ((-1 Potion))

Having cleared this portion of the cavern to her satisfaction, Mina brought her team back to the fall of rock, wanting to check out what was behind it.

“Okay Houndour, do you want a turn?” He barked enthusiastically, tail wagging. “Okay,” Mina pointed to the fallen rock with an excessive amount of drama. “Rock Smash!”

The rock fell away in short order. All that lay beyond was a single chamber (Mina didn’t know whether to be disappointed or relieved); the Johto trainer spotted another Krabby briefly, but it quickly scuttled out of sight into deeper water—this was another portion of the cave with tide marks on the walls.

“Okay guys, spread out a little and let me know if you find anything.”

She might as well have not bothered, as Mina ended up being the one to find it; it was another shell—this time in calf-deep water which might have been part of the reason why her Pokemon hadn’t.

“Two down, two to go each,” Mina told her Pokemon while she poured the water out of her shoes. “You guys want to keep going?”

Her question was met with enthusiasm from both. Mina couldn’t really blame them; in spite of her very soggy shoes, it had been a reasonably pleasant little adventure so far—no Bandra trying to kill them, and no wild Pokemon they couldn’t handle.

Five more offshoots of the cavern yielded two lumps of salt and another shell; no Pokemon bothered them, although Mina saw the occasional track and a few Zubat that took one look at them and fled. (Warned off by their friends from earlier? Mina wondered.) One of the five had been a dead end or something of the sort; all Mina could tell for sure was that Pikachu scampered back after a short time, pointed behind her and made complaining noises while looking frustrated. There was something at the bottom of the fifth, but it didn’t look like salt or a shell and by now Mina was running out of time.

“Just one more shell and we’ll get out of here,” she told her Pokemon. Pikachu was getting tired of the game, or maybe just tired in general, and Houndour looked happy that they were going to be getting out of the wet soon.

They passed up another rock fall in favor of the clear passage to the right of it. This one terminated in a dead end—one with another pit at the end with reasonably deep water in it. And just at the edge of her torch’s light (her third torch, the second having burned down enough she’d had to discard it) was shell number four.

“That looks a little deep. Magikarp let’s let you handle this one.” She called out her fish. “Go get that shell for me, would you please?”

Magikarp swam towards the shell uncertainly; Mina realized it wasn’t quite as deep as she’d feared; if she’d had the drive to climb down into it it might have come up to her knees at the shallow end, maybe a little more. The fish hesitated, then started to turn around; Mina opened her mouth to ask what was wrong—

And something big moved out of the deeper water after her.

If not for the dark and the water, Mina would have wondered how she’d missed it. It was only about a head short than Mina was, formed of pale cream and bright red armor, scarred from battles past. But that cream color was almost the exact shade of the sand, the spikes on its shell mimicked random shards of rock very well, and Mina knew from an old Oceanography class that red was the first color to fade to black.

“Oh drat.

It was a Kingler. And if the numbers the Pokedex was giving her were right, it had had a trainer.

Magikarp, prudently, bolted to the far end, back to Mina. The Kingler chased after her, one huge red claw snapping shut just shy of her tail.

“Pikachu, Thundershock it.” Mina’s voice went into battle mode, as even and calm as she could make it. “Houdour, Ember.” She wasn’t going to ask him to jump into that; she wasn’t sure if he could swim. “Magikarp, you have Tackle now, use it! Natu, I choose you! Nightshade!”

That was all she had time for before the massive thing attacked.

Mina recalled her fainted fish just before the Kingler took a bite out of her. The fact that it had just tried to eat her Pokemon was both sickening and infuriating, though the rational corner of her mind noticed that this happened all the time in the wild.

Natu uses Nightshade!
Kingler is hit for 21 damage!

Houndour uses Ember! ((Roll = 95))
It’s not very effective…
Kingler is hit for 3 damage!

Mina winced. This wasn’t unexpected—she was having Houndour attack a strong Water type, who was in turn half-submerged in water. But as he’d be swimming and in even further trouble if she sent him in to Bite or Rock Smash it, there was less than nothing for him to do.

Pikachu uses Thundershock! ((Roll = 1!))
It’s super effective!
Kingler is hit for 19 damage!
Kingler is Paralyzed! It may not be able to attack!

“YES!”

((Houndour: 56/60
Pikachu: 50/50
Magikarp: 0/35
Natu: 54/54

Kingler: 51/94 (Paralyzed)))

“Just a few more attacks guys!” Mina called out Pidgey to replace Magikarp. He wouldn’t like the cave setting any more than he had the last time, but she needed his experience. “Pidgey, Gust attack! Pikachu, Natu, same again! Houndour, you might as well try Ember ag—wait, you might be able to hit him with Smog from here. Try that instead!”

A second later Mina was wishing she’d held off on that Smog as the Kingler had decided it wasn’t happy sitting in the water being pelted from afar and started to climb up the wall after the rest of her Pokemon.

Natu uses Nightshade!
Kingler is hit for 21 damage!

Houndour uses Smog! ((Roll = 51))
Kingler is hit for 6 damage!

Pikachu uses Thundershock!
It’s super effective!
Kingler is hit for 21 damage!

Come on Pidgey…just a little more…

Pidgey uses Gust!
Critical hit!
Kingler is hit for 26 damage!

The huge Water crab was knocked back just as it cleared the ledge, and fell with a splash into the water below. Mina crowded back to the edge to make sure of it (having backed away during the fight), but the big crab was scuttling into the depths. Now that she was looking for it Mina could make out its spiky silhouette in the darker part of the chamber, then it clambered into a hole in the floor and disappeared.

Mina turned to her team with a sigh of relief. “Great jobs guys.”

((Later…))

Mina made it out of the cavern without incident, and with four Shoal Shells and four Shoal Salts just as she’d hoped. She’d also happily discovered her Pikachu had leveled up after the fight:

Pokemon: Pikachu (Shadowed: 0%) - Trained (1, 0, 0) in the last three days.
Type: Electric
Ability: Voltage
Gender: Female
Level: 20
Held Item: None
Exercise 1: P, H, J
Stats—

Sp. Attack: 31+5
Sp. Def: 27
Speed: 47+4

Rock Smash (HM)
Double Team

Less happily the tide was coming in, making her exodus even more wet than it had been going in, but she’d made it safely back to Andrei who’d promised her Shell Bell would be ready if she stopped by the next morning.

She was, however, late, and somewhat chastised to find her ride waiting for her.

Yeah in the 18th century, two inventions suggested a method of measurement. One won and the other stayed in America.
