Mark and Mina:

"We can choose the songs?" Mina asked interestedly – she'd never done karaoke before, and was only vaguely aware that it involved singing along to music.

"Uh... yeah? I mean, that's why they have the song list on the machine." Mark said, as if this were the most obvious thing in the world. He apparently doesn't realize that there are people in the world that have not gone to a Karaoke night. "Anyway, do you have a song that you really want to sing, or...? 'Cause I do have a duet that I'm pretty much required to sing at all Karaoke events, simply because of how well it accompanies the occasion!"

Mark, despite his lack of sleep, did not stutter a single time in that ramble. This did not bode well.

Snoring himself awake."Ha?! Who?! What happened?! What's going on!? Oh for pete's sake did I fall asleep again?!"An irritated twirtling from my head indicated that I indeed DID fall asleep. Apparently I had left Taillow out through out the night and she took to the warmth of my melon since I passed out and didn't return her to her, possibly warmer, pokeball.
"Aw gee whiz, I'm sorry Taillow! I must have passed out from exhaustion of all that walking throughout the night. Return!"With a flash and thankful chirp she was gone."Hey, wait a second... Bellsprout come out, did you have a battle last night or was that part of my dream?"With a flick of the wrist and another flash of a pokeball, a creature popped out that was definitely NOT Bellsprout, it was plant LIKE but certainly not the cute little grass type I had known for so many years. Much larger in body, and mouth, and without the foot like roots it's so well known for, Bellsprout had evolved without my notice. Now, a much larger Weepinbell appeared and looked half dead.
"Man I guess that wasn't a dream... That Trapinch beat the snot outta you... But you really grew up in a BIG way didn't ya little guy?!"

Mark and Mina:

"Well, I've never been to one of these things so I guess I don't have a preference," Mina replied. "What's the song? I usually sing alto or second soprano if it matters."

----------------

Jack:

The truck crew is still loading the helicopter wreck, and more than a few people seem to have decided that since they're up anyway they might as well get started with the day. A boy with an oversized butterfly net is headed out of town, whistling merrily with a pair of Pokeballs on his belt gleaming in the early morning sun. The man who you've seen previously surrounded by Coordinators is rocking in a chair on his front porch, alone for once, and appears to be knitting. Meanwhile a pair of boys, one in a bright yellow shirt and the other in mostly gray are standing in the middle of town, barking challenges back and forth, fingers edging toward their Pokeballs.

----------------

Matt:

As you sleep, your dreams are fragmented and frantic.

You run down the hall of the ship. Fear and confusion are everywhere.

Fragment.

You're talking with the cruise ship captain. You had some concerns about the itinerary change. He responds, but the answer doesn't make you feel any better.

Fragment.

You're running up the stairs between decks; something is wrong. You turn around and you're in the hall; there's the ship captain.

Fragment.

You're walking on the surface of the ocean; something is chasing you. There's a map of Helnith on the horizon. You start running towards it...

Fragment.

It's tearing through the walls, through the Pokemon, though everything in its way. Your mind wants to assign the name 'Gyarados' to it, but you know that isn't what it is. It's head is a skull with forward-facing ridges; it's an unnatural mottled purple-black. SHADOWED. Its wings block the hall...there's a man beside it, paying it no mind; the walls are bleeding and he's licking the blood off, then he turns to you and winks...

You awake.

((For convenience, you are ALSO at 6AM.))

Considering Mina's question for maybe one tenth of a second, Mark would say, "Well then... you would be perfect for the echoing part! 'Cause the song I was going to suggest is "If I had a million dollars" by the Bare Naked Jinx. It's a duet, and if you needed to get the lyrics, well..."

The prospect of Karaoke night waking him ever so slightly, Mark would reach back into his pack and pull out his journal once more, flipping to the last three pages and grinning. "I may or may not just happen to have those too!"

The lyrics (in the legible chicken scratch Mark wrote in) would be as follows:

*=Singer 1 (Mark)
^=Singer 2 (Mina)
#=Together
()=Sung with the crowd

*If I had a million dollars,
^If I had a million dollars,
*Well, I'd buy you a Mart.
^I would buy you a Mart.

*And if I had a million dollars,
^If I had a million dollars,
*I'd buy you merchandise for your Mart.
^Like some poffins, or a pokeball.

*And if I had a million dollars,
^If I had a million dollars,
*I'd buy you a Touros.
^A nice reliable mount!

*And if I had a million dollars,
(#)I'd by your love.

(^)If I had a million dollars
*I'd build a treefort in the yard!
(^)If I had a million dollars
*You could help, it wouldn't be that hard!
(^)If I had a million dollars..

*If I had a million dollars,
^If I had a million dollars,
*I'd buy you a furret coat!
*But not a real fur coat, that's cruel.

*And if I had a million dollars,
^If I had a million dollars,
*I'd buy you an exotic mon.
^Like a Like a Scyther, or a Masquerain!

*And if I had a million dollars,
^If I had a million dollars,
*I'd buy you Aerodactyle's remains.
^Ooo those crazy dinosaur bones.

*And if I had a million dollars,
(#)I'd buy your love.

(^)If I had a million dollars.
*We wouldn't have to walk to the store.
(^)If I had a million dollars.
*We'd take a limousine that costs more!
(^)If I had a million dollars.
*We wouldn't have to eat mac dinner.
^But we would, we'd just eat more!
*And buy really expensive ketchups with it.
^That's right, all of the fanciest... -Persian Ketchups.
*Ooooh!
^Yeah!

*If I had a million dollars,
^If I had a million dollars,
*I'd buy you a green dress.
^But not a real green dress that's cruel!

*And if I had a million dollars,

Matt:

((You've got a few more encounters with those rolls, but we'll just start with these two for now.))

You find the river and start heading west, up into the mountains. Every now and then you see something sparkle in the rocks and it occurs to you that you have a cruiseline-branded Mining Kit in your pack if you ever wanted to try striking it rich, but this thought is interrupted by a splash in the river. A ring of ripples is expanding from a spot away from shore, and there's enough disturbance in the water you can tell something is moving out there.

((Let me know if you stop for this, otherwise moving on...))

Another twenty minutes pass and things remain quiet along your chosen route, the river burbling along peacefully but Pokemon-less. It is then that you turn a bend and come across a strange sight: what looks, at first glance, like an inner tube wrapped around an upthrust of rock.

----------------

Mark and Mina:

"Ah, okay," Mina responded, a little taken aback—how long had Mark been planning this? Then again, he had been the one to suggest Karaoke Night in the first place... "Did you want to get together and practice around lunchtime maybe?"

To be honest, Mark had written the song down in this journal literally years ago, sort of as a prank on its previous owner rather than future nefarious plans. Back then he hadn't really known what the song was about, just that it was catchy and fun and that it seemed to drive everyone else insane. As penance for his crime, Mark had been forced to sing it at Karaoke night at every event ever since.

Fortunately, he happened to like the song. And he always managed to rope some poor, unsuspecting trainer in with him whenever he sang it. Today, Mina would be his victim of choice.

However, in response to her question, the young man nodded and in (a slightly forced) cheerful tone, he would say, "Yup, I would love to! And if you are up to it, maybe we could go hunting for some pokemon after the place closes, just so w-we don't have to spend the night... Not sleeping anyway?" He would suggest as gracefully as a miltank dropped from low orbit.

(Also, here's the the song reference, in case you didn't get it. )

Mark and Mina:

"That sounds fine," Mina agreed. It actually sounded rather late, but given the weird hours she'd already kept...and the chance for interesting nocturnal Pokemon...she'd take it!

"So, around lunch then. In the mean time...bounty letters?" The last almost as awkwardly as Mark. They were still a few hours shy of noon, which would leave her plenty of time to try beating some Berries out of poor, unsuspecting Coordinators...

----------------

Matt:

You creep a little closer, managing to find a few rocks to step on out of the water, trying to get a better look at the source of the splash. It's obscured by the rippling surface of the river, but as it swims a little closer you can tell it's at least two feet ((.6 meters)) long, blue, and seems to have a tail...

"POLI!"

It sprays bubbles in your face before darting away again, squeaking cheerfully; it appears to be a Poliwag.

"... Yes! Letters and then coffee. Or pop. Lots of coffee or pop..." Mark would agree, gracefully ignoring any awkwardness via remembering that he was currently rather sleepy. Calling back his pokemon except for Kirlia, Mark would gesture for her to lead the way and say, "Now then m-miss hero, I think you should do the honors? You were the one to bust the ring, after all!"

Mark and Mina:

Mina ducked her head and looked embarrassed. "You got the contact," she pointed out. "I just used it." But she let Mark usher her in anyway; the Ranger was still inside, though Nurse Joy appeared to have vanished off into the back.

Mina tried to get his attention as politely as she could. "Ranger Wain? You said to bring these back to you today?" She pulled out the bounty claim forms and waved them by way of illustration.

"Ah yes, you two." Ranger Wain smiled. "Where's your friend? The older man?"

"I'm not sure," Mina replied. She'd thought he'd come back to see the Pokemon returned at least...

"Never mind then." The Ranger pushed himself away from the front desk and motioned for Mark and Mina to follow.

"You two have a choice; I can give you your bounty reward as a lump sum in cash. Or, if you'd prefer, I can give you a smaller cash reward, and the Ranger Union has authorized me to award a choice of items we've confiscated from people like the gal you helped apprehend last night."

"Wait, confiscated? If you took it away in the first place, isn't it something illegal?"

The Ranger's Styler beeped, and the lady on the other end—Viola?—chimed in. "Not necessarily. Let me give you an example: the girl from last night had her Trainer's License revoked. She is no longer allowed to posses Pokemon, Pokeballs, or most accessories used to train Pokemon. But the Pokeballs by themselves are not illegal to own or use. These sorts of items may be used as evidence in a trial, but once the trial is over and enough time has passed, the Ranger Union is no longer required to keep them. Usually, we auction them off if they aren't items of a personal nature or stolen from an easily-traced original owner. Sometimes, we donate them. This time, we're offering them to you."

Mina and Mark could hear Nurse Joy speaking soothingly in one of the side rooms as they passed. Something growled. A moment later, the door shuddered. Mina shot the door a concerned look.

"That there is one of the Pokemon the fence was carrying. Poor thing's ball was scraped at least four times. The Growlithe is in better shape," the Ranger said, pushing open a door—behind which lay a small office, with a desk and a Styler charger on one wall. And what was presumably the Growlithe in question on a leash tied to the desk. It looked up from its food bowl nervously (it looked slightly more malnourished than the Mightyena had) but wagged its tail when it saw the Ranger and went back to eating.

"So, what'll it be?"

"Can we see what we have to pick from?"

"Sure thing, young lady." The Ranger pulled open a drawer and showed Mark and Mina its contents. "Like I said, I've been authorized to give each of you a larger sum up front– 7,000 PD for each of the Claim Forms I gave you - or I can give you 2,000 PD for each Form and whatever you want from in here."

((Drawer contents:

Razor Claw
Life Orb
Toxic Sludge
2-4 Berries that cure one status effect but cause a different one
Dragon Scale
Metal Coat
Power Weight
3 Potions
2 Super Potions
Revive
3 Pokeballs
Ultra Ball

And note that as usual, anything not explicitly claimed vanishes into the ether, because I'm not keeping track of loot no one wants. So be greedy! If you want something, say so, unless you'd rather just have cash.))

He would say, gesturing to all of the items.

"Um... for my reward, let's see... I-I think that I'll change out my 7,000 pd one for the 2,000 and... geeze..." Looking over the items, he didn't want to be too greedy, but he also sort of needed a lot of things. And also wanted a few things. There was just so much stuff! "Um... let's get the quick claw, metal coat, power weight," He didn't know what that one did, but assumed it would help with training somehow, "the revive, the pokeballs and the ultraball?"

That was worth about 5,000 pd, right? Mark didn't exactly have an encyclopedia of item costs in his head, so he was just guessing here. And probably completely wrong.

"W-well, we do have the three vouchers... should we turn in all three, or just two? I mean, I'd be w-willing to bring the reward to the old guy, or just to give the third voucher up? 'Cause it feels a little... er... abusive to use that too when we have access to all of this."

"That sounds perfectly fair to me," Mina agreed. To the Ranger she asked, "Can I get this back to Matt" she waved Matt's Bounty Claim Form "so he can come in later?" She was still mentally scratching her head wondering why Matt had turned down a reward in the first place, being stranded in a strange place with spotty memories. Sure, extra money wouldn't necessarily fix that, but it wouldn't hurt...

"Of course," the Ranger responded. "Just tell him to ask for me at the Pokemon Center or have him call me and I'll arrange something. You all have my number."

Maybe he's just less selfish than I am. Now Mina was starting to feel bad, so she focused on what to do with her form. The Berries looked interesting, so she pulled the Pokedex out and scanned them.

Ekon:
Growth Time: 8 hours (2 per stage)
A Berry native to the Helnith region, it is crunchy and tart but can cause drowsiness.

+10 Sweet (Cute)
+10 Sour (Tough)
Feel + 25

Cures Poison but causes Sleep.

Niptir:
Growth Time: 8 hours (2 per stage)
A Berry native to the Helnith region, it can cause nausea and vomiting in humans and Pokemon. Its juice is used to deter insects.

Dry (Beauty) + 10
Bitter (Smart) + 10
Feel + 25

Cures Burn but causes Poison.

Mina was loving this App; it gave her all sorts of useful information.

There were two of the Sleep-causing Berries and one of the Poison-causing Berries. Mina reflected that those might actually be useful...if she'd had any Pokemon with Sleep Talk or any natural Poison immunity. As it was, she supposed she could feed the Niptir, then the Ekon, and then one of the Chesto she already had to a Pokemon to have three of the major status ailments covered, but it seemed a little rough on the Pokemon's systems to put them through that, not to mention time consuming to grow all three when she knew Berries existed that could cure the same things without side effects. Maybe she could use them in Poffin?

The Potions she could use, but she could take the full cash reward and just go buy Potions too. And have money left over to do other things with.

...It really was a pity Jack hadn't joined them, as much of what was available would have been really useful for his Tentacool or his Horsea...and was largely useless for her Poison-type-free team.

"Hey Mark, do you think Jack would trade me something useful for any of this? Most of the rest looks useless to me." Jack had seemed a bit abrupt and impersonal, but just because he didn't seem to be good with people it didn't follow that he might not be willing to trade items.
