Oh. Oh Gloom had Chlorophyll. RIGHT. Okay. Tattersail needed to get out of there because she was too slow to get off a second attack.

So Mark swapped over to Fisher and, if the water type took a hit (he should be able to by Mark's calculations... he had a lot of HP, and the gloom had consumed its gem,) he told that pokemon, "Hey Fisher, use Ice Shard."

"Oh geeze louise I'm SO sorry Pyrofyl! I mean I'm glad you toughed it out but.... Nurse! Nurse Joy can we get the team fixed up again? I need to head back to the kitchen asap to whip up some fried food for them." Well... that didn't go as planned.

As I went back towards the kitchen area I pulled the tuber and one of the tropical fruit out, seeing the kitchen almost empty save for a couple trainers talking excitedly at the table, I set a frying pan on top of the stove and began peeling and chopping the items in earnest with a nice and sharp kitchen knife.

As I prepared, I warmed up the pan, drained as much of the starch from the tubers as I could, and used some oil in the pan so when it started to sizzle I could put the rest of the ingredients in. As the food cooked, a sweet smelling aroma wafted through the place. When the kindly nurse let me know everyone was fixed up and ready to go, I made three large helpings for Poliwhirl, Pyrofyl, and Gastly. After I went back to the Nurses' desk to grab them, I let them out in the kitchen and showed them the meal I had prepared for them hoping they'd enjoy it.

Your Water Pokémon sways dangerously under the heavy blow, but manages to pull together for an attack:

Gloom is hit for 34 damage!
Gloom faints!

Your opponent sends out Skorupi!

Jessia: 0/93

Gloom: 0/90
Skorupi: 73/73

Matt:

((-1 Raw Tubers, -1 Tropical Fruit, 2 Tropical Fruit remaining.))

The nurse returns your Pokémon, but informs you in scolding tones that there isn’t much that can be done about the exhaustion save rest and relaxation ((you are stuck with the stat damage, in other words)). She reminds you that your Fire type is still a baby and will tire out quickly until he builds up his stamina, and you shouldn’t push him so hard in the future.

Gastly and Poli both dig into the meal with obvious enjoyment, but Pyrofyl – despite having gleefully shoved in every bit of food he could get his jaws around prior to this – only mouths it sullenly and takes three times as long to finish the food as the others. (Attempts to take it away result in nipped fingers, however.)

Well, it wasn't exactly how much he'd been hoping to earn, but his team comp had admittedly not been the greatest. But still. He went to check out the potential pool of items he could work towards with these BP he'd earned from the delivery and match, and then he grabbed a bite to eat and went out to look over the cologne stand as well. He still needed to buy a few things before the end of the day and before he trained Marick a little bit more...

Mina:

((Trainer Hill Match 3 (of 8): ))

Mina realized her Sitrus Berries had (finally!) borne fruit, so she switched out Pidgey’s Chahal for a Sitrus instead. Not that it was likely to help much, at her current rate of losses.

Once again Mina found herself at the far end of the arena. This time, the floor of the arena was quickly covered in poisonous spikes. Warned by her previous experience, she sent out Pidgey, just as a Honchkrow appeared on the opposing side.

Oh, this is going to be rough.

Wanting to get in at least one hit before Pidgey went down, Mina called for Quick Attack.

Pidgey uses Quick Attack!
Honchkrow is hit for 24 damage!

Honchkrow uses Bleak Void!
Shadowy darkness descends!

The darkness leeches energy from Pidgey!
Pidgey takes 4 damage!

Drat. Mina remembered this move from way, way back in the Battle Festival. She debated going for another Quick Attack but it hadn’t done much even before the weather move halving its power went into effect. She’d just have to hope Pidgey survived long enough for a Gust.

Pidgey uses Gust!
Honchkrow is hit for 20 damage!

Wait, what? I thought Honchkrow were faster than that? Apparently not.

Honchkrow uses Pursuit!
Pidgey is hit for 66 damage!
Pidgey uses his held Sitrus Berry to restore 30 HP!

Not that she’d been planning to switch anyway with those spikes on the ground, but now she definitely wouldn’t.

The darkness leeches energy from Pidgey!
Pidgey takes 4 damage!

“Again!”

Pidgey uses Gust!
Honchkrow is hit for 20 damage!

Honchkrow uses Pursuit!
Pidgey is hit for 64 damage!
Pidgey faints!

Mina sent out Oodramer, and winced as he was immediately Poisoned. Also, there was no way he was getting the first attack off with his terrible Speed. “Bubblebeam!”

Honchkrow uses Pursuit!
No effect!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
Honchkrow is hit for 24 damage!

Oodramer takes 11 damage from Poison!
The darkness leeches energy from Oodramer!
Oodramer takes 5 damage!

(Mina privately wondered how that was happening, with the Spectral immunity to Dark moves. But then, Flying types could be hurt by Sandstorm – Think about it later Mina.)

Her opponent was obviously thinking hard, but apparently decided it wasn’t worth it to switch and called for a Wing Attack.

Honchkrow uses Wing Attack!
Oodramer is hit for 42 damage!
Oodramer uses its held Sitrus Berry to restore 30 HP!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
Honchkrow is hit for 24 damage!
Honchkrow faints!

Oodramer takes 11 damage from Poison!
The darkness leeches energy from Oodramer!
Oodramer takes 5 damage!

Your opponent sends out Haunter!

Mina wondered if her opponent realized Oodramer was part Normal, too, or just didn’t have anything more type-relevant to throw at her. Regardless, Sandshrew couldn’t do much against a Ghost type (and would end up Poisoned as well) so she kept Oodramer out.

“Bubblebeam!” If she wanted to be mean, she could have called for Vortex, but Mina objected to potentially Shadowing someone else’s Pokémon just to win a competition – it did mean her attack options were limited, however.

Haunter uses Nightshade!
No effect!

Apparently didn’t realize he’s a Normal type.

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
Haunter is hit for 23 damage!

Oodramer takes 11 damage from Poison!
The darkness leeches energy from Oodramer!
Oodramer takes 5 damage!

Haunter uses Curse!
Haunter loses 37 HP!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
Haunter is hit for 26 damage!
Haunter faints!

Oodramer is afflicted by Curse!
Oodramer loses 22 HP to Curse!
Oodramer takes 11 damage from Poison!
Oodramer faints!

Mina sent Sandshrew out, and the Ground type was promptly Poisoned. Her opponent sent out a Misdreavus, and Mina immediately understood why the Haunter had been thrown away like that. Presumably this one didn’t have anything that could hit Oodramer, not that that did Mina any good at the moment.

Sandshrew only really had three attacks that would to anything at all, thanks to Misdreavus’ immunities. Mina was pretty sure she was going to lose this regardless, and stalling wasn’t going to help under the circumstances, so she went with Rollout.

Misdreavus uses Confuse Ray!
Sandshrew is confused!

Sandshrew is confused!
She hurt herself in her confusion!
Sandshrew takes 11 damage!

Sandshrew takes 9 damage from Poison!
The darkness leeches energy from Sandshrew!
Sandshrew takes 4 damage!

The darkness lifts.

Mina sighed. This was going about as well as she expected. “Defense Curl, then Rollout.”

Misdreavus uses Astonish!
Sandshrew is hit for 12 damage!

Sandshrew snaps out of confusion!
Sandshrew uses Defense Curl!
Sandshrew’s Defense rises!

Sandshrew takes 9 damage from Poison!

Misdreavus uses Confuse Ray!
Sandshrew is confused!

Sandshrew is confused!
She hurt herself in her confusion!
Sandshrew takes 8 damage!
Sandshrew uses her held Sitrus Berry to restore 30 HP!

Sandshrew takes 9 damage from Poison!

Misdreavus uses Astonish!
Sandshrew is hit for 9 damage!
Sandshrew flinches!

Sandshrew takes 9 damage from Poison!

Misdreavus uses Astonish!
Sandshrew is hit for 9 damage!
Sandshrew flinches!

Sandshrew takes 9 damage from Poison!

The Pokédex informed Mina that Sandshrew had snapped out of her confusion, not that it was helping. “I yield!”

Once more, she told herself. If she didn’t make any progress after the next fight she’d call it quits early and trainer one of her Pokémon instead.

((Toxic Spikes in effect.))

Pidgey: 0/76
Sandshrew: 26/76 (Poisoned, Defense up 1 level)
Oodramer: 0/88

Honchkrow: 0/102

Wait... Mark could get how many vitamins with his BP?! For a second he would stand there, looking at the list of options while his mind added all that together. Then with a low, almost villain-like laugh, Mark put together his order list and submitted it.

He ended up purchasing 1 HP-Up, 2 Iron and 1 Carbos with his BP's. He also redeemed a Revive, because recent events had proven how necessary those were to have around. He would apply one of the Iron and the Carbos to his Chevlain, working to leverage those already somewhat stacked stats, and he would apply the HP-Up and the other Iron to Marick.

At the cologne salesman, Mark would look over the options, tap at his chin, and then pointing at the specialty scents he asked, "Okay, so I'm guessing the Joy, Excite and Vivid scents are generic, all purpose colognes, while the others are for specific types? Would one of those happen to work especially well with a Dark type pokemon?"

"Okay, so I'm guessing the Joy, Excite and Vivid scents are generic, all purpose colognes, while the others are for specific types?"

“That is correct, sir,” the stall minder tells you seriously. He pulls out a few slips of paper and starts dabbing them with Cologne, then handing them to you to sniff as he talks. “The Joy, Excite and Vivid Scents are pleasant to most Pokémon, regardless of type, with the Vivid Scent being the most potent of the three. The others are comparable to the Vivid Scent in potency for the types that react most positively to them, but for types that don’t, it has roughly half the effect. If you’re feeling budget conscious, and don’t know what Pokémon you’ll be using it on, the Excite Scent is stronger than an off-type scent.”

((Which is a fancier, drawn out way of saying:
Joy Scent: -10% Shadow Gauge, +1 Happiness
Excite Scent: -20% Shadow Gauge, +2 Happiness
Vivid Scent: -30% Shadow Gauge, +3 Happiness
Everything else: -30% Shadow Gauge and +3 Happiness for the type(s) it’s intended for, -15% Shadow Gauge and +1 Happiness for all other types.))

"Would one of those happen to work especially well with a Dark type pokemon?"

“Yes,” and he takes a bottle of dark liquid off the display and puts a dab on a paper slip for you. “The Sneak Scent works best for Dark and Ghost types.”

Mark would give each presented cologne a sniff, not exactly knowing if that's what he was supposed to be doing because this suddenly felt much fancier than the life he was used to, but hoping if he did it would be like following social cues in other unfamiliar situations and he'd be a charming kind of awkward. Especially since he was going to buy something.

"Well I happen to have a dark type in need of deshadowing, so..." Mark said, getting out his wallet. "I'll take a Sneak scent and an Excite scent." One for now, the other for when, inevitably, another member of his team got appreciably shadowed. Hopefully with the sneak scent boost, he'd be able to get Sengar mostly, if not entirely, de-shadowed before the end of the day. Which... would actually be incredibly helpful, since the battle set had made him painfully aware of just how much type overlap there was on his team, and if he was being honest with himself, Jessia was currently the weakest of his ice type to the over-all team composition. And outside of Sengar, he had nothing to deal with psychic types or high-end special attackers in general.

Bidding the salesman good day, Mark then went and got Sengar out of his box. Before working the dark type, though, he trains Marick so that his steel type will level up one more time, and then he asks one of the nurses if there is a room where he could work to de-shadow one of his pokemon that was isolated from everywhere else. If Sengar triggers, he doesn't want the dark type running off to rampage through the place, shadowing other pokemon or potentially hurting anyone.

Thanking the nurse for the information, Mark would consider how to do this and, with a rub at his chin, decided that he could potentially just apply the sneak scent he'd purchased today outside, with Fisher and his Corphish sent out preemptively just in case that full shadowing potentially caused problems with the already tsundere dark type. After that, he could decide how he wanted to proceed with Sengar's deshadowing, or even if he wanted to make an attempt at this particular moment.

The Pokédex informs you that Chevalin does not have any evolutions.

You notice that as nightfall is approaching, a slow but steady stream of people are making their way towards Trainer Hill - most of them are coming from the direction of Skybreak City - and setting up camp around the base. There is still enough empty grassland to give you some space, but that obviously won’t be the case for much longer.

((Are you using the Sneak Scent now?))

----------------

Matt:

You wake up on a couch in the lobby – strange, you don’t remember going to sleep there – very sore but otherwise fine, and all your Pokémon returned to their balls. It is about 6:30 AM, and the early curfew rush is already gone.

One of the remaining trainers giggles when she sees you en route to the bathroom, and when you look into the mirror you discover why: someone has scribbled graffiti all over your face in what seems to be sharpie. Most of it comes off with a good washing.

Leaving Skybreak City turns out to be much faster than getting in, and by 9 AM you’re at the base of Trainer Hill. The Cologne stall is nice and obvious outside the building.

Mina:

((Trainer Hill Match 4 (of 8): ))

This time the arena was engulfed in cold and hailstones, so, realizing there wasn’t a lot she could do, she sent out Oodramer – at least he wasn’t weak to any Ice types.

But for the second time that day, the hail cleared almost immediately and was replaced by rain. Her opponent (in a bright yellow raincoat, no less) had sent out a Pelipper – and her Pokédex said it had Drizzle. Odd, Mina didn’t remember them being able to have that Ability, maybe it was a regional variant?

She didn’t have anything that could tank Water moves better than Oodramer, so she left him out. Unfortunately the only one with Rock moves was Sandshrew, and none of her Pokémon knew any damaging Electric moves, or this would have been a quick fight.

It resisted Bubblebeam and Aqua Tail, and Vortex was out (in addition to the usual reasons) because it was obviously a Flying type. Which left –

“Façade!”

Pelipper uses Supersonic!
Attack missed!

Oodramer uses Façade!
Pelipper is hit for 8 damage!

Mina wondered how much of that was from Oodramer’s shoddy attack, and how much was from Pelipper’s durability. She checked her Pokédex, and reflected that going after the Water type’s Physical defense was probably a mistake.

“Bubblebeam!” Hopefully the rain boost would help overcome Pelipper’s resistance.

Pelipper uses Supersonic!
Attack missed!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s not very effective…
Pelipper is hit for 17 damage!

Oh, much better! “Again!”

Pelipper uses Supersonic!
Attack missed!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s not very effective…
Pelipper is hit for 17 damage!

“And again!” Maybe they could just chip away at Pelipper’s hit point total until it was unconscious…

But her opponent was apparently getting frustrated, because no sooner had she called out than the Water type vanished…

…to be replaced by a Goldeen.

Are Water types all he has??? Made sense for a Rain team, but still…

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s not very effective…
Goldeen is hit for 22 damage!

Goldeen uses Flail!

Oh, that’s why. Mina had never been a fan of strategies that relied on your Pokémon being battered to be effective – aside from that it didn’t seem kind to the Pokémon, it seemed risky if the trainer miscalculated – but they did exist.

It’s super effective!
Oodramer is hit for 26 damage!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s not very effective…
Goldeen is hit for 22 damage!

Goldeen uses Flail!
It’s super effective!
Oodramer is hit for 28 damage!
Oodramer uses its held Sitrus Berry to restore 30 HP!

Oodramer uses Bubblebeam!
It’s not very effective…
Goldeen is hit for 19 damage!

Goldeen uses Flail!
It’s super effective!
Oodramer is hit for 92 damage!
Oodramer faints!

Mina sent out Pidgey. Her opponent must have been feeling confident because he didn’t switch.

So naturally, she called for Quick Attack.

The Water type went down immediately ((24 damage)) and she was sure she heard her opponent raging on the opposite side of the field.

Out came the Pelipper again.

“Gust!” She wasn’t going after that crazy Defense again if she could help it.

Pidgey uses Gust!
Pelipper is hit for 18 damage!

Pelipper uses Supersonic!
Pidgey is confused!

Mina wanted to switch, but if he used a Water move on Sandshrew…

“Gust again!”

Your opponent recalls Pelipper!
Your opponent sends out Mantine!

Pidgey snaps out of confusion!

“Yes!”

Pidgey uses Gust!
Mantine is hit for 9 damage!

Mina called for Quick Attack, figuring she’d try to hit the other stat and see how that went.

Pidgey uses Quick Attack!
Mantine is hit for 21 damage!

Mantine uses Supersonic!

Again?!!

Pidgey is confused!

“Try Quick Attack again!”

Pidgey snaps out of confusion!
Pidgey uses Quick Attack!
Mantine is hit for 19 damage!

Mantine uses Bubblebeam!
Pidgey is hit for 63 damage!
Pidgey uses his held Sitrus Berry to restore 30 HP!

“Again!”

Pidgey uses Quick Attack!
Mantine is hit for 19 damage!

Mantine uses Supersonic!
Pidgey is confused!

Mina was wondering why he hadn’t Bubblebeamed again, but then, he didn’t know her last Pokémon was a Sandshrew.

Speaking of…

I’m sorry, Sandshrew!

Mina switched; she needed to clear Pidgey’s head and hope for more luck once he was out.

Predictably, Sandshrew ended up right in the path of another Bubblebeam. She went down in one hit. ((90 damage!))

Her opponent didn’t switch.

“Quick Attack!”

Pidgey uses Quick Attack!
Mantine is hit for 20 damage!

Mantine uses Supersonic!
Attack missed!

There was definitely swearing coming from the other side of the field now.

“Again!” The Mantine went down at last. ((23 damage)) One final Gust against the Pelipper…it hit the ground but wobbled to its feet – and collapsed, unconscious! ((Exactly 17 damage!))

“YES!”

Mina opted to have her Pokémon healed ((way past ten rounds already anyway! )), and proceeded on to her next match. ((+1 round))

((Rain in effect.))

Pidgey: 43/76
Sandshrew: 0/76
Oodramer: 0/88

Pelipper: 0/77
Goldeen: 0/69
Mantine: 0/83

Well at least the day's starting off on a good foot, I think to myself after leaving Skybreak city. The road seems quite busy with people heading towards, and leaving from, Trainer Hill. As I approach the clearly obvious Scent Stall, I begin to wonder if I'll have enough money to get every scent needed to un-shadow everybody.

"Ah hello, I'm in a dire need for your wares as I managed to make a horrible mistake which ended up in five of my pokemon being shadowed." I gulp taking a deep breath before going on, "I'd like to purchase the best scents to help two normal types, a grass type, a ghost type, and one electric type please."

Matt:

((-4,500 PD, 3,400 remaining. +2 Relax Scents, +1 Sticky Scent, +1 Sneak Scent, +1 Bright Scent))

You make your purchases and the stall minder tells you the best way to apply your new purchases. ((Reminder: Scents can only be applied once per Pokemon per day!))

((Yes, I'm going to try to apply the cologne right now, though with Lapras and Corphish out before Sengar even leaves the pokeball just in case.))

Mark takes note of the camp as he's getting ready to apply the cologne, and he considers if he has enough time remaining to go over there and see just what's going on before turning in for the day... though of course, it would be pretty dumb to do that without checking the situation out with his binoculars first. Because Bandra was everywhere, and what might seem innocent enough from far away could quickly become an awkward and dangerous situation up close.

But first, applying drugs directly to the dark-fox's face...
