Before I joined the muliplayer part of the game ... I would have said Capitol for sure ...

Now that I have played a few games in ToH there's NO other answer then Creatures before capitol .. getting that 7Th level dweling week 1 is essential!@

Just gotta be careful for example if you are building the castle & working on angels week 1.
If you start with archers tower also, try building the mageguild then the tavern first, not only is it a prerequisite for the portal of glory but also fot a city hall.
With your scout searching near your area resources might not be enough for the portal of glory.
Ideas for the castle you can go for the glory lol,
Go for the training grounds,
go for the castle,
go for the gold, all depends on your part of the area & most likely you will know what decision to make lol.

Sorry for sacraficing the angels

Yup played those actually I was playing Moc not to long ago on a random med 200 lv map.
We were both fortress (I lost the save sorry Moc)
I went for the town hall.
Built harpy hags (fortunatley found the right resources lol)
& beat all the 2nd lv creatures up with my hags lol.
Fortunatley found the ore mine & found plenty of wood early lol.
Most cases I do prefer 200 lv makes the game more interesting.

Revived.

Discussed so many times. Still there are some newcomers who are more money-related, so they have some more posts to read and probably change their opinion..

well, now i play only randoms with my friends on certain templates from toh (thank you to whoever made and posted those up there )

No, random maps are not fair, and the map generator sucks. But I still love random maps.

I played a few maps from toh repeatedly and they just sucked after a while. Ok i know what to do get fukin 7 heroes in the first week, chain like a madman, get as many creature dwellings up and clear the map with the chain. Then if it was a closed map take the rellics and the middle as fast as possible and then hope to get better stuff. The only actual strategy was being able to take your opponents goodies and the final battle you had. And that was about it.

Open maps are a bit better but after a while they too got boring.

So now i don't play nearly as much but if i do, i stick with randoms.

I strongly disagree concerning mage guild day 1.
Never with rampart, for example.
You want to build elves, upg elves, pegasi, dendroids, unicorns, citadel and castle. That's 7. Build just a tiny mage guild and you'll miss those unicorns!

That's another story, but still, I would start with upgrade archers. Unless the map is so easy I can even neglect that.

What about a resource poor map where the crystals and gems are not flowing?  Also, there are some random maps where you do not get an extra pile of wood at the mill, and upgrading those elves and getting a castle is tough, especially if there are no random wood piles lying around.

I agree, go for creatures when possible.
My question for you is, when you can't make the perfect build because your resources are not sufficient, what do you build??  Do you save the money or start building a city hall???

I think kwahraps' question is relevant.

My tactic is to go for the level 7 creature dwelling as soon as possible. But sometimes I find that I am lacking ressources because I could not find any gems or sulfur...
So what do you do if you don't have the ressources for the perfect build?

My answer would be to go for Citadel and Castle because you will get more creatures week 2 and usually you never run out wood or ore. If I get stuck with low ressources, it is usually gems, crystall or sulfur. Next, I go for the marketplace to get the ressources silo faster as those are the ressources you probably need.

That is my answer, but it would be nice to hear others take on this.

You gotta have an idea what you will build 1st week, 2nd week, etc.

It can change a bit and it depends on a lot of factors.

If you see you can't make it:

1, try harder
2, try even harder
3, do logical adjustemnts to your plan

(like you go for castle and unicorns for rampart cause you not gonna have castle+dragons anyways)

I still say it all depends on how rich the map is. You may need to upgrage money sooner then you would like.

Insufficient resources is indeed a major factor. Hitting the restart button repeatedly until that gem or sulfur pile appears works during solo play, since there aren't any other online players. I confess I play quite poorly on Impossible because of the lack of funds and the opponent's stifling advantages, but there are some things we should come to agree on. You know those maps that have nearly all mines guarded by Level 4's and only about three free resources/chests are left on the ground? You'd have to alter your building plan considerably if you play past Hard and especially Expert. Not that any backup plan you might come up with will be enough to save your butt...

Lastly, this is why I'd never play a map like Pestilence Lake on any difficulty level beyond Hard. It's simply not worth the troubles and disappointment.

Well, I used to also think that it depends on the richness of the map. But with time, I found out that you don't need to buy out all your army in your castle. And here is the difference with better players; a good player will not need all the available creatures in his castle to take ressources, mines and fights. He will be able to do it with less creatures, but more key creatures like dragons only with some fodder or Mighty Moos and hydras with some serpent flies.
Therefore, in a similar situation where both players  have the same amount of ressources, the better player will go for key creature dwellings and be able to clear the map. He will then set up a chain of heroes to send reinforcements every week as the game continues.

Not loosing armies during fights is key in winning. The better player will loose less creatures in fights and not need the same amount of creatures to win the same fight. That, I think, is the difference between a new player and a good player.

Finally, if you do not need the same amount of creatures as you used to because your skills are getting better, you will not go for capital first. You will go for the dwellings. week 1 army with some week 2 key creatures will enable a good player to do almost anything on his map. So then he doesn't even need the capital or extra money because he can wipe the map with what he's got.

Just thought I share this with you guys out there. I am not an awsome player, but I know at least how to become better!

Sorry Conan but this works only for the very rich TOH Maps. I play some of those ominous very poor M Maps, where learning is one of the best skills. Also if you play random and your opponent is heavingly blocked on his side, ask him to continue, as he has now time to build capitol, which surely brings him the win. If u get this money special dude, take him as main, open the chests for experience as it will count for u in the end! This coole dude will give 1000gold per day when he has level20!!!!!!!..woohoo .. (get that! its unbelievable!). And learn the wicked Zombie attack!!

I know what you're getting at. For me, I suppose I have less maps available to play since I don't have AA, just RoE and SoD. So with what I have, there are some limits. I prefer large maps to smaller ones, but there aren't a lot of them. I'm also assuming there was this one map designer who was notorious for creating resource-poor maps like Pestilence Lake. You start with nothing on Impossible, yet there's basically nothing around your castle except maybe three piles of something (for me, one gold, one chest, one wood/ore). That's good for one more dwelling, but there are level 3 and 4 creatures guarding all over the place. It's a little hard to fight without losing a few precious troops.

Nevertheless, I'm working on it. And I'm off to finding a copy of AA on Ebay.

I can relate to that! I wasn't very atracted at first by those open map templates like jebus or schaf's world, but ended up loving to play those cos it gave some kind of rush to be the first to break into the treasure area and win.The problem is my winning spree ended as soon as i tried Sir Stiven's template, "Sandstorm" in a multiplayer game.It made me rethink my gameplan cos by day 2 i was running along 6 heroes(jebus style) and managed to colect 2 chests one lep and some  res piles.By the end of the week i was weeping for extra cash and couldn't build the castle with rampart
