Is this a bug?
Hello i was playing Homm4 WoW and i noticed that everytime my enemy asked to retreat and i said no it retreated anyway. This pissed me off big time especially since sometimes it would work and sometimes not. Finally i noticed that it only worked when battle was not in a city and if a hero was present. I said no you cant retreat but they do anyway in that case. I cant have that. I think its a bug unless i am mistaken. Help?

Not a bug either. The surrender option is the same as retreating, though allows you to keep your army. I guess the enemy asked to surrender in exchange for gold. You said no. The enemy then chose to retreat to the nearest town, losing its troops but retaining its heroes. As long as they have a town, any hero can retreat from an open battle whenever they like.

ah i see, it didnt say that so i was confused. I dont see why the hero should be able to escape if i have him beat on the battlefield but w/e i guess its part of the game.

but you know what, im not 100% sure of this but i seem to remember battles where i kill the enemy hero and he is able to retreat anyway before all his troops are killed. My memory is hazy on this though so if its not possible then disregard.

I've only ever played the original version of HOMM IV (no expansions), but if I recall correctly, an enemy hero with Grandmaster Charm can FORCE you to accept surrender terms (I guess he/she temporarily mind controls you to do it). While less probable than a retreat, it's quite possible as well.
