G-man is there "just for business".
In start of HL2 he says that he "sold" Gordon's expertise to the highest bidder.
We also know that he is involved in Black mesa accident and the combine invasion.
I hope they answer stuff about him in Ep3.

AR2 is the standard plasma rifle thingy that shoots those bouncy balls and that the combine troops have in later game.

DS# It's possible, but i don't think it's just buisness. I think he is from the homeplanet of Nihiliath and his spicies, and arrived to earth when gordon opened the portal to xen (midway planet, where nihiliath fleed to when the combine took control of their homeplanet) to join forces with earth (vortigraunts and humans) to beat the combines massive army.
Fauch# AR2 is the Pulse Rifle (The big one yes).. I remember a place in the game early into the lecture, a radio operator clearly inexperienced in combat but not willing to show it (and probably wanting to impress the girl next to him, since he keeps looking at her while talking) interrupts the explanation to claim that:
While he has never used an AR2, he did use an AR3 back in City 17, which was "lousy" with them.
He (and other "city folks") defeated Hunters with their bare hands. He claimed he was killing 10 to 20 a day back then.
The other Rebel dismisses his stories as made up and refuses to resume the AR2 explanations unless he leaves, which he does not.

In the very original HL2 there was AR1, AR2, and AR3.
AR1 was a flare gun, AR2 was the same and AR3 was that Barricade mounted Machine gun variant of AR2 that was handheld

Isn't G-Man on Earth already, before Gordon causes the resonance cascade?

The first time you see G-Man is when taking the tram, at the very begining.

Oh snap! Thats right, the tram even stands still, and G-mans tram too, and he is looking at you..
But still, he can't be a human from earth? Unless he is somekind of agend from a top secret organisation wich already have controlable portals??
Aaii, they better be telling the story in HL2 EP3
