Privacy Issues and electronic devices
Does your cell phone keep track of where you have been?
Clicky
Should your phone company have the power to keep a record of every place you go without your consent? Should they be allowed to sell that information?
How about cameras scattered throughout the city to monitor citizens for "crime prevention?"

I don't really care whether my phone operator knows where I am, what they are going to do with that "knowledge" anyway? 
And the cameras are helpful, and if they also catch a glimpse of me walking down the street, well, no big deal.

Oh, it's a big deal!
I try to put on a show for them. there must be whole reems of police footage of me moonwalking past camera's just to prove a point.

But that's sad that even people who seem to be smart are completely unaware of constant invigilation.
I don't say that gathering and storing information about everyone has to be evil - in fact, it is essential for popular IT services, such as social networks, google search, directed ads and augumented reality (coming soon). As long as it is under resonable control.

it doesn't keep track of where I've been since I never have it on me 
I usually don't have any electronic device on me, so good luck to keep track of me.
but I see, what's Elodin's problem. I see nothing wrong with the technology itself, but rather the way it is used. I'm thiking of telescreens in "1984" it is not hard to see how it could be use to limit our liberty.
cameras to detect problems which could lead to accidents and quickly being able to intervene, why not.
I also read about an application which allows you to locate your friends thanks to their phone. again why not? of course, you should be able to make sure that only your friends can locate you.
but for example, I have doubts about something else. paying the parcmetre with your phone. what's the point of that, if not to intrude in your private life?

Well, wearing a tinfoil hat WOULD reduce the amount of radiation your brain receives, so theoretically it does its purpose
But this issue is sort of a partial issue.
1. We need laws and regulations FORCING the companies to not be able to sell of data, or have infinite storage in case they could sell something.
2. This of course also requires the goverment to be able to purge itself if it is not doing its job.
3. If anything, we should be more worried about the goverment slowly stagnating moralwise, and then screwing us over than companies selling us out, because at the moment the companies are by the law forced to not sell us out.
I guess Americans will disagree over that, because of the lack of sane regulations combined with more regulations than needed quantity wise. Add on a general distrust over the goverment combined with a 2 party system where both sides are equally corrupt and disgusting, and you have a really bad place to be if corruption starts becoming visible.

I'm not sure, but I think it has something to do with you not having to retype your password each time you go on a site.
there is also a relation with the mass of spam you receive in your mailbox. people make lists with infos about thousands of people and sell them to some companies. usually, they don't ask what is your religion or your political preferences, so I guess that's at least a good point

Why do internet sites have cookies?
The option is to have each site make a spesific config file for each IP, which means that when your IP changes, you lose all your configs. If someone highjacks your IP, and BAM all your data on that site would be accessable.
While the solution is cookies are partially old, back in the days RAM was expensive per megabyte, meaning that there was no viable way of making a page fast yet accessible.
Trust me: The option is a lot worse
