Philisophical things to think about

Let's say there's a woman named Joan and she's got a tumor.  This tumor is also malignant in the most horrible way so she has it removed.  Scientists are so fascinated by this ultra malignant tumor that they keep it alive in the lab with a nutrient broth. After years of continuous growth the tumor actually becomes larger and heavier than Joan was originally.  So the question is, which one is now Joan - the tumor or the woman?

True story btw

The part that has Joan's consciousness?

The way I see it the tumor is an invader in the first place, it's not really "her".

The tumor is a parasite that's dependent on Joan. The tumor isn't self sufficient or self conscious enough to take on the role of Joan.

What if Elvin was female?

Depends on the definition of Joan. If speaking of the person then the answer is obvius. If speaking of the entity that Joan was at the time of the operation then neither of them is Joan but rather Joan 785419334 and Joan's tumor 785419334.
