heroes chaining

Hey,

can someone please explain to me why people prefer heroes chaining over the good old "build your army and go butcher your enemy" strategy?

I watched a few games on twitch and it bores me to death seeing how everyone buys maximum heroes and use them only to move army from one hero to another thus prolonging their turns for hours on end without getting anywhere.

By the time you get each of your heroes strong (if that's the purpose of heroes chaining indeed) I could just level up my main (since I only carry battles with the main hero, not with all heroes like chainers do) and then come to you, defeat all of your underleveled heroes and occupy your town and gg

Please explain!

Thanks

First week monsters give little experience and there is where you mostly need chaining, to gather faster than the other player all resources behind weak mobs. As at every turn start each hero movement range is calculated on his slowest creature, thereby chaining is also extensively used to speed your main hero, by leaving only one fast creature on him at the end of each turn. It may look pointless but 3-4 more tiles every turn pays after 2 weeks if you moved wise.

In general good players do not bother developing more than one hero above lev ~3. And yeah, is very boring to look at chaining strategies but it is a very strong advantage if done well and requires a keen eye to become effective.

The Chaining is used by a lot of players because of mobility, let's say that your main hero with your most powerful troops is 5 days away from a town you own and isn't heavily guarded, and you spot a strong enemy hero that has more than enough troops to conquer your town, but much less than your main hero. The enemy would capture your town and recruit one week worth of creature and then you have to waste 5 more days to reconquer it. But if you use chaining this problem would be resolved in one day.

But if that enemy hero is near one of your heroes that has no army he can just kill that hero and then occupy your town, and the result is the same, with the difference that you just wasted 2500 gold.

Also, I don't understand the need to chain heroes when dimension door and fly are allowed. You just pick kyrre/gunnar/dessa find one of these 2 spells or angel wings + boots and gloves and there you go. You beat anyone in any corner of the map in one day. Problem solved.

Best way to understand the game complex mechanics is to try your luck at World Tournament against various players. Don't forget the vaseline because it will hurt for a while.

Hmm, OK. It makes sense that you mostly need chaining in first weeks. I didn't look to see what week/month those players were when they chained, so I'll assume they get rid of heroes as time goes by.

But, why do you say that you need to gather resources faster than your opponent since no 2 towns develop equally? You just gather them as you need them to accomplish your goal (which is probably to build your entire town creature-wise). The key in Heroes3 I believe is to have more army than the opponent, expert earth with town portal and shackles of war. You have these and nobody can beat you no matter if they chain or not, no matter what stats and artifacts they have, no matter which heroes (well, except for tazar, neela, hack, mephala, gundula obviously).

LOL. Thanks but I don't have the patience. I would have had it about 15 years ago, but not anymore

I was just intrigued about why people prefer to waste time with chaining instead of focusing on building creature dwellings in town, buy out the army and go for the victory...

I'm a single player myself cause of lack of time. If u say "i find chaining useless" no one can argue with u. I love watching Maretti0 online videos mostly cause of his chainings. There are a lot of good things using more hero, and the purpose is not to level all those heroes,is to win the game.In single ,play whatever u want, but in online game u cant win without. Just imagine the enemy main hero is just comming in a straight line to u,and still flags all mines, dwelings, towns, utopias, etc. ,while ur main hero goes back and forth. I've learned a lot from online game and use it in single, and i get a greater score every time my chaining is good.

Well, before creating this topic I was finding chaining boring and useless. Now I'm only finding it boring

Offtopic question: any1 played Avencast: Rise of the mage? God, I liked that game and I'd like to know if anyone knows of a sequel to it?

It's fun to play without rules and without chaining...till the moment when your opponent will learn to chain and use advantage of unbalanced game features. By the way, in homm3 WT you don't need to wait for opponents's turn, you can do yours at the same time

Cool! I might try that sometimes when/if time allows

Well, I remember having played against a friend between 1995-2001 at least once a month and while we did implement some rules after some time when we noticed that one of us had really huge advantages (receive starting hero with diplomacy while the other player wasn't even being offered the skill throughout the game, or getting necromancer, etc.) the thing is we never needed more than 2 or 3 heroes. But it's also true that we made a rule out of only battling each other at the end of the game and after we have finished clearing the map of arties and monsters.

You might say it's a newbie style of play but we had fun in doing this and not being rushed or bugged by imbecile AIs who do nothing the entire game but take the mines after you've flagged them or attack your secondary heroes and stuff like that. Really annoying and this happens when you play against humans as well. They still attack your secondary heroes

So anyway, unless you play for real (in tournaments, for cash, other prizes, etc.) I don't see a reason for chaining - although I did begin to sense its importance.

It's like to have Ferrari and agree never to drive it with speed higher than 30 km/h...you know that it can drive much faster but you prefer 30 km/h... Why not if you like it?
