Heroes 4 and Windows 8

OK, so I have H4 Complete (GoG), and somehow it refuses to run under Win8 (x64). The sound works fine, the game would probably work fine if I wouldn't need visuals, the thing is, the screen goes black. Just like that. Tried compatibility, it does not work. Anyone around that has experienced these problems and managed to make it work? Anything that does not require me to switch operating systems?

Use integrated graphic card.
On my laptop I have 64 bit W7, and H4 refuses working on Geforce.

There is nothing wrong with Windows 8 (if you are ok with metro UI). I play H4 on Windows 8.1 without problems. Compatibility setting Windows XP SP2.

i am constantly going back and forth between different OSes - in the last 2 months ive had on my computer installed XP, 7, 8.1 and Linux Mint, so ive used each of them and liked each of them for something, but hated each of them for something enough to go on to the next thing

but now that i have more than the most usable RAM in XP, i wont be going back to it

i like windows 8.1 for some reasons, but i hate it for the fact that i play games which have anticheat that preloads and since windows 8.1 is still new, it doesnt get detected as something pleasant, thus the anticheat shuts down the game process and doesnt let me in, and compatibilty mode doesnt do a thing

I had virtually no trouble running Heroes IV on Windows 8, and the same holds for Windows 10. I did encounter the black-screen trouble you noted, and I have given my solution.

My system is mid-range, neither state-of-the-art nor outdated. It has an Intel Core i7-4790K, an NVidia GeForce GTX 980, and a Sound Blaster Audigy Rx.

Here are some minor difficulties I have encountered, with solutions that worked for me:

1. Problem: Game starts with a black screen. Solution: Hit ctrl+Esc; then L-click the game's icon on your desktop's taskbar. The game will then display normally.

2. Problem: Game plays with distorted images on widescreen monitor. Solution: Set monitor to 4:3 aspect ratio. Note: I could not do this with a View Sonic monitor and an AMD video card. So whether or not you CAN adjust your monitor to a fullscreen/4:3 aspect ratio depends on your graphics processor and your monitor. Also, you MIGHT be able to adjust your screen to 4:3 my using your GPU's software. I know I have done this in the past, with NVidia's control panel.

3. Problem: Could not find my saved games. Solution: R-click the Heroes IV start-up icon, click Properties, click Compatibility, click "Run this program as administrator." The next time a game is saved, it is stored in the "games" file in the Heroes of Might and Magic IV directory.
